2025-10-09 08:53:52 +0000 UTCAlso my interpretation of what Roswaal meant by Emilia being "born with the curse of sharing the same lineage as the Witch of Envy" is simply her being a silver haired half elf. Because Emilia is born a silver haired half elf she is just forever fated to be compared to the Witch of Envy. She's never gonna stop being hated, feared, isolated and alone.. thus she will always be weak and helpless without the need for someone else to help her. Which goes along with Roswaal's base philosophy that everyone is just fundamentally weak unless they cling to something that gives them strength.

Just like how Subaru attached himself to Emilia because she saved him, Roswaal also attached himself to Echidna because she saved him. There's ALOT of parallels between the two of them that are so interesting. I think Roswaal is mostly angry at Subaru for having the audacity to believe he has a chance at saving everyone at the mansion and the sanctuary WITHOUT his Return by Death. Cos after all, Roswaal's deepest regret is that he wasn't strong enough to protect and save Echidna. As a way to cope with that loss and trauma, Roswaal came to the conclusion that people are just inheritantly weak.. and the only way to even have a chance at succeeding anything they must sacrifice everything for the sake of that one precious thing they want to protect. Which is exactly what he's being trying to instill in Subaru - to throw away everything (including his own self worth) for the sake of Emilia and to rely on his one and only power of Return by Death as the tool to success. So to think that ordinary weak powerless Subaru is defying all that and believing he can do it without that power, is an insult to Roswaal's convictions. However this creates an even better dilemma that Roswaal may have to start considering.. "if weak Subaru can do it..why couldn't I do it? What have I been doing all this time then? Manipulating and using people as tools for the goal? Does this prove wrong what I've believed in for so long?"
