The year of Shadow the Hedgehog

The prophecy was foretold: In 2024, all creatures of Earth shall know the name Shadow the Hedgehog. And so, with a single page remaining on the calendar, the tree of the future bears the fruit of the present.

Yes, dear listeners, it's time for us to talk about Sonic x Shadow Generations, particularly the Shadow-focused expansion that is the best Sonic game in many years. What makes this addition work where other Sonic entries have failed? And is Sonic cribbing the Mario playbook?

Plus, a free indie 1v1 FPS blends Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament, Goldeneye, and Mario Party into a must-try treat.

Games discussed:

Sonic x Shadow Generations, Straftat, Babbdi

MY DAD WATCHED THAT MAN BEING TESTED FOR THE MOON THING. I have a very distinct memory of walking into my living room and asking my dad about what he was watching. This is pretty late because I'm going through the backlog but thank you for this because i thought it wasn't real and i just made it up in my head

Thank you Chris for bringing up the true basic twilight zone episode. My favorites are the pig faced people "beauty in the eye of the beholder" still scares the hell out of me to this day.

Hey Plante, did you ever play The Thuamaturge? I think I remember it was mentioned a while back.

Kind of related to this genre but if you’re looking for a manga series, I highly recommend Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. So many great creepy/supernatural/horror stories. The footnotes are incredible too, I learned a lot more than I expected about Japanese history, culture and language through this series

On the topic of the Twilight Zone, Night Call is one that has always stuck with me. The reveal messed me up!

Mr Plante, I highly recommend checking out the new EC Comics series - Epitaphs from the Abyss and Cruel Universe. They are in the spirt of the original Creep Show comics and really scratch the itch.

Matthew Williamson

Outer limits was the show I loved to watch but new would give me nightmares when I was a kid

"The core Sonic games have a real appeal for speed runners." No lie.

Elias Helfer

Sonic frontiers slaps, I’ll fight anyone on that

Noooo way you’re talking about wicked, it’s fucking INCREDIBLE. Goddamn I’m seeing it again

British series, a bit like Twilight Zone = The Prisoner https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prisoner

The year of shadow the hedgehog seems like it's going a lot better for him than it did for luigi and nintendo in the year of luigi 😂

irt anthology recs: the GDT Cabinet of Curiosities on Netflix is pretty good! the Panos Cosmatos ep with Peter Weller and Eric Andre is particularly great and vibey but Plante, if you have never watched Richard Kelly’s The Box, I would strongly recommend it. It’s an adaptation of a Richard Matheson story, which was also used in an original Twilight Zone ep, but this version stars James Marsden and Cameron Diaz and takes some wild turns. It’s probably my favorite Kelly movie, and has his trademark surrealism and metaphysics, plus some dialogue and performances that would make sense in Inland Empire or S3 Twin Peaks

Speaking of free games! Probably more for Frush, but have you guys checked out Celeste 64? I think you can only grab it from itch.io, or at least that’s where I got it, but I just copied the downloaded game folder over to my steam deck (I used a USB stick but whatever you have), pasted it and then added the .exe as a non-steam game while in desktop mode and bam! I’m playing 3D Celeste on my Steam deck and getting so, so frustrated all over again. I think it’s been out for like a year, maybe more, but I came across it shortly after the shy guy surfing episode here when I went on itch and played it a bit on PC before finally adding it to the deck recently. Highly, highly recommend

Shadow with a gun in the trailer for the movie, being voiced by John Wick, is making it a best picture contender for me.

there is a really cool 60s anthology series called Thriller. One episode called Grim Reaper really scared the shit out of me. Starring Boris Karloff and a very young William Shatner!

So this is in response to an aside from Friday’s episode—but I 100% support Plante’s push for you all to play 1000xResist before GOTY. It is really a very moving narrative that is thoughtfully delivered through the medium of video games, and it brought me to tears. I honestly feel like it is what Citizen Sleeper was in 2022 for you all, where Chris was banging that drum all year, and then you all finally came around to it right before GOTY. I hope you all do the same for this one!
