What are your favorite games in Steam Next Fest?

The Resties will discuss Steam Next Fest demos in an upcoming episode. Before we record, we'd love to hear what stuff you're enjoying! (We dig Metal Slug Tactics, pictured above!)

Comments

Just an exhausted Zelda trying to set tax rates while finding out what happened to Twink.

Moss

^ my favorite mix of gameplay since battle chef brigade.

Charles Entertainment Finster

Late to the party here, but Uncle Chop's rocket shop (a roguelike fix em up) unintentionally got an entire saturday afternoon out of me. it's exactly like it sounds-- fun animation, lighthearted gameplay, fixing broken spaceships.

Charles Entertainment Finster

I love this idea so much! I think people would've rioted if the first time you can play as Zelda you need to manage the home, because GIRL. But this would be such a fun take imo!

Queeran

Blue Prince - I almost get a Sleep No More vibe from this puzzle game (but if you were alone in the McKittrick, which would honestly rule). You build a house room by room as you learn its secrets and find your way to a specific end goal. It's got layers and you learn more on each pass through the house, but it doesn't make me want to frustratedly Google hints while I feel like an idiot. All the answers are there; if you're butting up against something, you can trust that there's just a room or a secret you haven't found yet and keep exploring. I'm really excited for the full release.

Kate

After listening to Justin’s take on the zelda game I kind of wish it was a kingdom management game where you hired mercenaries to go out and search for information on Link and then you sleuth it out.

Moss Covered Rock

Wild pitch but yall should download delta emulator since it’s on iOS now and play Pokémon unbound. Playing Pokémon on your phone, and one of the best Pokémon games ever, is so much fun. Maybe a resties episode?

Taylor Dorsett

Parcel Corps looks super fun. Like Jet Set Radio on bikes.

ThrashMTN

Dungeons of Hinterberg seems cool. Love to play more it.

toucanpete

Hey gang, recently been getting back into Death Road to Canada! Great pixel art and funny dialogue always makes me gravitate back to it. Bonus: has steam remote play so you can play with up to 4 other folks in different places.

Devon

So you can still see top demos on Steam and it’s got me wondering about a trend I’ve noticed - survival games tend to do really well on Steam. I’m thinking of Valheim, the Forest, technically V Rising, and recently that Enshrouded, but also Rust and just so many other survival crafting games. The only one I’ve ever liked is Don’t Starve and that was more because of the art and personality of the game, but I find them such a chore, especially when so many of them require restarting frequently. I wonder if anyone has thoughts on why Survival as a genre (oh man I just remembered Ark) is so popular? If someone here loves it, can they explain why?

EtherEli

Installing now. And the cauldron one lol

EtherEli

Tiny Glade was very relaxing, it's a no goals, build your own rustic village game

Julia

Does Dragon is dead count? I know it was mentioned in summer game fest. It’s been really fun. Movement is really satisfying and you can change your build every run which is nice for some like me who changes his mind a lot!

Kyle Chamberlain

It kept crashing on me. :(

The Onj Monster

Played a couple more demos last night. PILLORY is a weird surreal JRPG I guess. It was unique and I low key kinda loved it. Bloodless is a retro style action game with a really rad aesthetic. It’s definitely Souls inspired and I liked the combat but don’t have enough experience with those to know if it’s good good.

The Onj Monster

I am.... so freaking excited for that

Caleb Ackerman

Knack 2

Will Metzler

I know it’s not Steam but are y’all watching the Nintendo direct? Did you just see the Zelda reveal?!

EtherEli

Thank you for the recommendation, this was the coolest digital pinball take I think I've seen yet, can't wait for the full version.

Vanrooster

Saw Tactical Breach Wizards already in a few comments scrolling down, but that's definitely one of my picks. Also: Hollowbody, a Silent Hill-inspired cyberpunk horror game, and Thank Goodness You're Here, a quirky "comedy slapformer" featuring the voice of Matt Berry.

Sweet Wizzle

Tactical Breach Wizards demo is fantastic. It's the third game in the Defenestration Trilogy (along with Heat Signature and Gunpoint) and feels super super good.

Matt Swanson

Dungeon Clawler! It's a roguelike with an art style reminiscent of Cult of the Lamb in which your "deck" is a claw capsule machine. Very fun!

Max Souders

Didnt have time to play any unfortunately, but I’m curious about Sworn. Looks like a co-op roguelite heavily inspired by Hades, hope it turns out to be good!

ThanaThots

I'm really excited for Dungeons of Hinterburg, the movement is a blast. I like Puffin Planes too, seems like it'll be a good chillin' game

vincevexlerusty

One more - just played the Grunn demo, which has five possible endings. After getting the first one, I immediately shut it down. It's just a totally normal first-person gardening sim with an interesting art style, nothing at all weird of course, but I was so enamored with it that I just want to save my experience for the full game. That's when the power of demos is at its strongest IMO!

AaronElWhite

Tactical Breach Wizards was definitely a highlight. Also enjoyed what I saw of Alters, mostly for the vibes and story. Sort of reminds me of Moon x Annihilation x the Martian.

Zachary Hoyer

I liked I Am Your Beast so much I bought El Paso, Elsewhere (made by the same studio) and I've been playing it all weekend. It's not as good but the writing is interesting and it takes a lot of swings that I can admire. Super excited for IAYB.

Dillon Broadwell

I gave 'thank goodness your here' a go and enjoyed it. Been looking forward to it since the weird trailer last year(?). Quite an untitled goose game feel about it, but possibly more weird with less 'action'

Brendan

Curious about Horticular, Caravan SandWitch, Flock, and Machi Koro with Everyone!

y0j1m80

Hollowbody was my highlight! A cyberpunk silent hill, the few puzzles were satisfying and the gunplay/controls felt good while still feeling classic survival horror. Aesthetically it’s perfectly spooky and gross while still being very readable. Definitely on my wishlist!

Doctor Worm

Out of the 25 or so demos I played, my picks would be Tactical Breach Wizards, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, The Alters, Blue Prince, Tiny Glade, Hollywood Animal, and Caravan Sandwitch. Wizards is definitely best of the fest for me I had a blast, but all of those games were fun for the entire demo, left me wanting more, and had a solid level of polish to them.

Splintercat

I don’t know how much Besties like Wholesome Games but I follow them and liked Tiny Bookshop

EtherEli

One Btn Bosses feels like a roguelike Super Hexagon, which is to say, I am ready to lose a lot of time to this one when it comes out. Per the name, you control a ship with one button, changing direction and avoiding bullets as you circle a boss shooting bullet hell patterns at you. The demo sold me on it immediately.

Grayson Morley

I’ve really really been digging the Long Fungus 2 demo! It’s a really polished, metroidvania sequel to Lone Fungus, with a ton of enhancements and reworked visuals. Can’t wait for this one

Aeide

Aloft! It gives you access to a glider almost right away that can fly anywhere on the map. I found it so refreshing to get such freedom of movement at the start rather than as an endgame reward like most survival games. I also enjoyed the process of learning new building recipes by sketching examples of them found in the world, and the airship system seems incredibly cool. Definitely going to pick this one up when early access launches.

Trevan Haskell

I really liked Tactical Breach Wizards, it was sorta X-com like I suppose expect maybe had bit more of like a puzzle element to it if you wanna accomplish like extra challenges, I like the gameplay but I also liked the worldbuilding and writing as it was the right kinda silly that I like haha.

Nokikissa

Phantom Spark! It's a fun racing game where you compete for the best times on each track. Reminds me of Wipeout mixed in with Neon White(??) with how easy it is to restart your run. One button press and you're back at the start of the race. Easy to pick up and put down with the races being so short.

Jeff Garcia

Dungeons of Hinterberg. Combines many flavors I love (Zelda, OlliOlli World, and Persona) into one very tasty dish. Demo definitely had me wanting more.

Jonsie Miltz

The Big Catch looks very sick in terms of aesthetic and gameplay. They put out a sandbox demo called the Tacklebox and it seems like a lot of good ideas but definitely needs some more time to fine tune the overall feel and difficulty (if the demo is representative of the game difficulty).

Ben Nisley

RP7, Schim, & What The Car?

Johnny Van Cura

Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter. If you missed the first one, it's a 2D, side scrolling, souls game with a Redwall (yes, the book) coat of paint.

Mixmaster Moose

I’ve been playing a lot of the demos and my favorites have been: Dungeons of Hinterberg - it’s has an amazing art style and moving around feels really cool. It’s like a magic snowboard game. Very cool. Enotria and Flintlock both seem like they could be cool but are slightly janky. Bo, Path of the Teal Lotus is cool. It seems like it might be closer to what I was hoping Nine Sols would be. It’s less twitchy and precise combat and more movement and exploration. I’m also excited for Wizards of Legend 2 and Crashlands 2. I loved both of the originals and Crashlands especially seems like it has a lot of big improvements.

Robert Boswell Johnson

I haven't played much but I'm always looking for new sports games - I enjoyed the demo for Full Court Heroes. Very old school

Derek

I'm all about cozy games right now, so I definitely had a bias for my favorites, but my to two were Tavern Talk - cozy vibes nailed, this visual novel absolutely hooked me with the writing and plot lines. It felt so good to help the main guest that comes into the tavern and I can't wait to keep playing. Tiny Glade - cozy, flexible world building at it's finest. It was so fun to build little homes, towers, hills, castles, gardens, and other adorable worlds. I'd love to see some sort of "inspiration/quest" system added to the game to give inspiration for different things to build. I easily lost a couple hours building, tweaking, and starting over on a new idea.

Stephen

I really like some of the hot-swap build customization ideas behind Enotria: The Last Song. I will say though, the entire time I was playing it I kept thinking how weird it is that we get 2 soulsborne games this decade about Italian Puppets.

Ben The DorkKnight

I haven’t gotten to try it but as a lover of xcom and other squad tactics, the breach wizards looks fun

Sandy Archer

I checked out the demo for a game called Pinball Spire that bills itself as a pinball metroidvania and it was really fun. It’s very much like a series of interconnected pinball tables. I only unlocked 2 abilities in the demo but it was doing some very cool stuff and I’m definitely going to be picking it up when the full game releases.

The Onj Monster

Tactical Breach Wizards; the gameplay was really fun and the writing is even better. I stopped the demo after a couple of levels because I want to savor the final release.

Fernando Dominguez

I loved Tactical Breach Wizards too. I got a lot of Into The Breach vibes coming off of it.

Peter LaCara

• Demonschool - early Persona (1 & 2) vibes • Thank Goodness You're Here - weird British lol vibes • Caravan Sandwitch - sunny sci-fi escapism vibes

Andrew Lussenhop

Sulfur continues to be one of my most anticipated games. An excellent sorta roguelite immersive sim FPS with extraction shooter elements and great cartoony art.

cameron Swingle

I loved I Am Your Beast for pure gameplay fun, and Tactical Breach Wizards was just the kind of tactical strategy game I love, with incredibly good comedy writing wrapped all around it. I cannot wait for them to come out.

Ian Pytlarz

Tried out Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers just because the name was so funny. Turned out to be a really fun roguelike deckbuilder! Definitely gonna buy it when it comes out

PaxSnax

Blue Prince and Lox have really done it for me!

Colton Butcher

I enjoyed Tactical Breach Wizards, but not sure how hard I'd beat the drum for it because the demo was very on rails. Need to wait for a full release and see what's up.

Geoff N

The two huge standouts for me so far are Tavern Talk, Building Relationships , and Tactical Breach Wizards. Those are all definite plays. Also wanna shout out Mind Over Magnet, made by Mark Brown (aka Game Maker's Toolkit). It's a really cute and fun little puzzle platformer. And lastly, a game I played and immediately backed on Kickstarter - Pipsqueak! Okay, lastly lastly, the most fun I've had was probably actually with WHAT THE CAR? If you've played WHAT THE GOLF? and enjoyed it, there is no way you won't love this, too.

AaronElWhite

I implore the Besties to check out Hollywood Animal. It is from the makers of This is the Police. You are the studio head in Hollywood in the 1930s for the demo. It is kind of like The Movies, but with sinister undertones as you deal with people's vices, blackmail people, and further into the game you can kidnap and murder. Has vibes of Hail Caeser! too.

Geoff N

Luna abyss!!! It was last next fest but its damn good

Joshua Whitmore-lyons

There's a game called Blue Prince I tried that's almost like a roguelike escape room? You build a manor room by room and explore it while trying to get enough resources to build more rooms and manipulate the connections between the rooms to get to the end while solving randomized puzzles. I'm not sure it entirely 'works' but I love the unique take on a roguelike and I'm curious to see what the final product looks like.

DoctorDake

I am Your Beast was sweet, had a great soundtrack. I also liked Parking Garage Rally (fun retro racer, great on deck) and The Operator was cool

Tyler89537

I have loved Wild Bastards. It’s the same game from Void Bastards and it hits a lot of the same high notes that made me love that game. Plays amazingly on Steam Deck too!

Paul George

I loved I Am Your Beast! Also started to get into Once Human, even though it probably requires more time to get fully into it since it's a survival MMO. Also enjoyed Skyward Dream mostly for the psychology aspects of it, since the platforming wasn't quite as good as I was hoping for
