Hey besties buddies!
It's Plante with an update on the publish time for next week's Resties. That episode will be published as soon as we have it ready -- most likely before the end of the day on Thursday, April 11.
Unfortunately, I got stuck in Newark Airport last night during thunderstorms. I'm back at the airport and hope to catch a late afternoon flight. This throws a few wrenches into the recording time Frush and I had planned for this evening.
I'm sorry the episode won't be ready for Tuesday. Thank you for your patience. As a token of gratitude, here is me at midnight moments after my flight got canceled after 6 hours of delays!

Also, I’m already dealing with a couple different chronic illnesses, and don’t want to add long Covid to the list. Also, I’m cold a lot and the mask keeps me warmer. Also, I’m nonbinary and the mask reduces my dysphoria. Also, having a cold greatly intensifies one of my weird medical conditions. So many reasons for me to keep a mask on, and really no compelling reason for me not to :)

2024-04-04 23:24:39 +0000 UTCI still mask. Like Plante, my wife is immunocompromised. But even if she wasn't, I would still wear one. A big part of it for me is the risk of long covid. People talk about covid like just because it's unlikely to be fatal that there aren't any lasting consequences. That covid is no different than the cold or the flu: you get sick, and either there's the tiny chance you die, or you get better. But long covid can seriously mess you up, and it doesn't really matter how young or healthy you are. My younger brother got covid and ended up with brain damage. I was just reading an interview with the singer from The Magnetic Fields, who was one of the first people in the country to get covid. He said four years later he's unable to write anything that's longer than an index card. And then we treat covid like it's just a respiratory disease, but it's not. It spreads like a respiratory disease, but it's also a vascular disease that can hit any system in the body. So even if you don't end up with long covid, you still now have a much higher risk of diabetes, heart disease, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, etc. I wear a seatbelt when I drive my car, I wear a helmet when I ride a bike, so to me it's a no-brainer to continue wearing a mask, especially since I'm much more worried about the consequences of covid than an accident, and much more likely to catch covid than get into a wreck. And that's just the selfish stuff. There's also the element of the guilt I'd feel if I had covid and found out I'd infected other people, and also the desire to make spaces more accessible for immunocompromised people.

My guess is that when you see folks wearing masks these days, it's rarely a statement and more of a "I can't afford to get sick or get someone I love sick." At least that's my personal experience.

2024-04-04 17:21:51 +0000 UTCI understand this probably isn't the time and place for this conversation, but I can't help myself so out of sheer curiosity, are there still ppl masking up ? Like it's more of a cultural thing no ? And I say that as a Georgian living in the deep south (albeit more left-winged Atlanta area) where hardly no one wears a mask, particularly now-a days; but even during the depths of the pandemic, I know it was considerably less common than northern states. For instance, I lived in Maryland/DC between 2019-2022, and while still south, considering the proximity and cultural influence from northern USA, a majority of the denizens wore masks including myself (and then I'd come down South to visit family and be like "what the heck, where are y'all's masks"). Admittedly, and this is just personally, I stopped wearing a mask probably sometime around or shortly after the vaccine became a thing and really haven't looked back. I only wear a mask now when I'm sick. And with all of that being said, I observe Plante wearing a mask in an airport (indoors, lots of ppl, understandably), and I also observe the other ppl in the picture seemingly not wearing masks (in NJ/ Northern state) which in full honesty would be me too without giving it a second thought, and that's today in the year of our lord and savior 2024 (versus a year like 2020/2021) so . . . 🤷♂️ just curious !
