Usually it's just because they're old and valuable and have to be handled carefully, but sometimes there's something more to it. Library administration absolutely did not want me reading the Asinus Manuscript, which was all the more reason I insisted on reading it...even as they handed it to me, they implored me not to go through with it, or to at least stop before section 36.
