She knew what would happen if the other villagers found out she'd transformed...she'd seen it firsthand. Banished for "witchcraft," as if anyone would CHOOSE to lose their humanity and invite such suspicion. As far as the fear that it might be contagious, she had shared that too, and still wondered now, given her current state. But she hadn't joined the crowd throwing rocks at poor William, who begged for mercy until he finally darted off into the forest.
When she woke up covered in soft grey fur, she knew she had to leave as quickly as possible. She scrounged up some food, a few supplies and a cloak, but soon discovered that her new ears were painfully uncomfortable pinned back under the hood. Through tears of frustration, she tore two holes in the top, reasoning that even if two big rabbit ears sticking out were conspicuous, at least it would keep her warm.
No one spotted her. She took one last look at the village, wondering if she'd ever see it again, or ever change back to normal. Then she picked up her pack and slipped away. Her load was a bit heavier than it needed to be, partly due to the extra cloak she packed, in case she ran into William.
