It's been another busy week but thankfully no storms that knocked out our power! My partner and I have been looking forward to this weekend so mostly been taking a break from drawing (i also injured my elbow and hand so that kinda forces me to take it easy haha) Let's get chatting about these prompts, shall we?
Baby Talk - a super adorable fact I learned is baby orca have their own baby babble! Each pod has their own distinct language, unique clicks and whistles and the like, and babies basically just make noises. Family members communicate back to them, repeating specific calls to help them learn who their family is 🥹
Delphinidae - The Dolphin Family! Probably one of the most diverse groups of ceteceans, boasting up to over 30+ dolphin species! The killer whale is the largest in the group. They're part of another group called odontocetes (toothed whales), because they all have teeth instead of baleen such as humpbacks or blue whales. This piece shows a few of my fav dolphin species!
Super Pod - I thought this was only for animals like dolphin but then again as we see above, orca are part of the dolphin family! Though apparently orca super pods are not as frequent? One that gets a lot of attention is the gathering of pods of the Southern Resident Killer Whales because theyre especially endangered (they have their own prompt I hope to focus on later!) But every so often several pods come together, and according to researchers its most likely to hunt together, and socialize and find breeding partners.
For the zorca, they form a super pod for their courting event, Turning of the Wheel!
