So in chinese tradition, a sect or martial art sect like the spirit river sect in this story, or other sect as well, has a stage of school. Its like this : 1. The outer area, where the common people usually live a normal area, that is where the fire kitchen area reside. The fire kitchen has a task to provide food for the sect. So if they eating secretly at Midnight.. That is because the food is not theirs to begin with, its the sect food. What they did at Midnight is kinda stealing the food. 2. Outer door sect This is the area of the first step to learn in the sect. They need to pass some test to become an outer disciple. Usually they take the best candidate from outer area to become an outer door disciple. 3. Inner door sect. This is where the best of the outer disciple will get into, if they pass the test to become inner disciple. More level, more advance knowledge, more profound skill etc. 4. Main sect hall This is the area where student / disciple from inner door will get into if they pass the test to become a core disciple. They will become the best student with the most advance sect skill. So basically its like a pyramid. for example, if the outer disciple are about 5k people, the inner disciple would be around 500 people, and core disciple would be around 50 people.
