Thanks for the insight! I'm not exactly mad at judging criteria on the basics and fundamentals, because they're critical to music proficiency. If your fundamentals aren't good, you can't do anything

2025-04-10 22:08:29 +0000 UTCI played Trombone in school and have been to several real competitions, as well as having spent a brief amount of time in a regional orchestra. It is that bad in a real competition. The whole point is to judge you based on how accurate you are to the composition, because it's supposed to be an objective evaluation of your skill rather than a subjective evaluation of how much they enjoy your performance. Like Kousei said, it's a competition not a recital. Of course there are also competitions where your improvisation or showmanship is important, but those are private competitions, not Local, State, Regional, or National competitions. Basically, you need to know the basics, before you can be the master, and these types of competitions are meant to judge you on your fundamental understanding of the basics and fairly place you in rank among your peers for scholarships or recommendations.
