I think if they were alive, and they do go back home, maybe it's also symbolic of them accepting their life for what it is, bc they know they didn't change. Idk these types of endings always stress me out lol but it's cool

2024-08-17 02:48:30 +0000 UTCDirector told actors they didn't die to shoot the last scene but that's just for him to direct their acting. I think ending is open to interpretation. I personally think they died. Not just because scene is weirdly bright like no storm happened and fence once there was gone, but also because I don't think them staying alive wouldn't really mean happy ending because the real world they're going back hasn't changed. So I want them to be happy in their own world.

Like her husband died cheating on her but she paints this great father image of him to Mugino. Also warns Mugino not to step over the 'line' or he'll go to hell(I mean ofc not literally)

As third part of the movie progress(kids' pov) you realize how innocent and harmless actual story was and because they can't be accepted in real world they had to make up story (poor Mr.Hori) to protect themselves because they can't ask anyone's help
