The B.E.E. Podcast Reluctant Announcement: The Taxman Cometh

Hello dudes and dolls, hope you are all healthy out there as the season of the virus lurches on. So it looks like in July, Patreon will begin adding sales tax to your pledges. We didn't want this to happen but even the mighty Bret Easton Ellis Podcast cannot thwart the greasy fingers of The Taxman from slithering into your pocketbook. The tax amount will vary depending on where you live. We realize money is tight everywhere and we sincerely wish to keep all of you aboard as we continue rockin' into the future. The podcast has never been stronger and we are passionate about working hard to deliver an elite audio experience with every show we post. We are taping a new episode this week with an eager and willing guest, and it will be ready for your ears late next week. Thank you for your support over the years! Bret and I are truly grateful and we are very proud of this exclusive community we have carved out in our little corner of the world wide web. We are beyond lucky to have the most intelligent, best-looking listeners on Earth. We love you all! If you have any thoughts on the Eagles, feel free to share them in the comments section below.

Thanks for The Last of Sheila and Welcome to LA. I've enjoyed them both. I can't stop thinking about Welcome to LA. Such an odd film. Richard Baskin is like a parody of a shitty lounge act from the time. The whole thing is weird and kinda gross. It's interesting to look at, but I would never want to live in LA. Seeing Model Shop and OUATIH strengthen that impression. LA looks very ugly...and the people... :-/ Just gross. :-)

Antonio Primavera

Saw the Eagles for the first time in Dallas prior to lockdown - zero showmanship (except for Joe Walsh) but they still sound joyous and bright and melodic as hell. The harmonies made the show worth it and they played the hits.

Tyler Zalac

Thanks for the heads-up Adam. Saved me refreshing my app 5 times a day :-)

Reservoir Frog

hey froggy, adam here... gold coming friday, silver on sunday... sorry we can’t always keep a consistent schedule but we do our best, bret is busy with projects and i have a full-time job so things occasionally arise that affect when episodes get released

The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast

Any day that the Dodgers play = Producer Adam is unavailable

James Reeves

What’s the fucking podcast schedule ?

Reservoir Frog

Gipsy Kings California cover is bigger than life.

David Cortijo

F***' this! Riots in the streets!!

Jonathan Davis

Can you at least let us know the ETAs of the podcasts if there are delays??

Reservoir Frog

Taxation is theft

Erik Jerrard

I'm a by lebowski fan. An achiever. Fuck the eagles man! I can't abide the eagles. Plus the Gipsy Kings ruined hotel California for everyone

Jorge Espinha

However... I don't get why I have to pay taxes since I'm paying it from abroad and I'm not American or live in America. The exports are usually tax free in Europe and Bret's podcast is an export

Jorge Espinha

Fuck them! I am going gold!

Jorge Espinha

Would Bret join Cameo?

Alex Lawrence

BEE has a GREAT podcast.

Eric M. Rhein

Get Camille Paglia on the pod

JT

Been with you guys since Kanye part 1. Try and get rid of me- ya can’t.

Pp358

Listener for life. Take my money.

Christopher Webster

I love Red Scare Podcast — big shout out to Bret for introducing me to this.

James Reeves

I grew up in the 70s so of course I love the Eagles but I was wondering what Bret's thoughts are on Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown. To me the band had that classic Eagles country rock sound but applied with a Replacements influence, truly one of my favorites from the late 90s. Bret is one of the few to actually speak up for Ryan Adams after the NYT hit piece, I was wondering if he ever gave the Whiskeytown catalog a chance and what his thoughts are a year after Adams was canceled and his career put on hold? Anyways, love the podcast, always top quality, big fan of BEE since reading Zero in high school. Take it easy.

Shane Giglio

how educated & novel to automatically be against any kind of tax.

Javier G. Madrigal Jr.

Eagles are fine. Technically and melodically great, but too polished for my taste to be elite musical artists. Look, Don Henly and the Eagles are fine, but they aren't Neil Young and Crazy Horse, know what I mean?

Jamie

Eagles are dope. Hope Bret comments on King of Staten Island, and maybe even has Apatow as a guest again. I enjoyed that film

Raffi N

Waiting in the Weeds

connor gross

I love Tryin’ from the first Eagles record in 1972. I fuckin’ love Brett and I fuckin’ love this podcast. Best looking listener from Spain. Salud!

David Cortijo

When I was young and my parents bought me my first stereo for my room, they gave me a copy of “Their Greatest Hits” as a gift to go with it. Something about it felt wrong. It didn’t feel like me. Of course I knew their music and grew up with it, but really? Is this what I wanted to listen to even as a girl still in the single digit age group who hadn’t fully developed taste yet? It wasn’t and I didn’t. However, now as an adult, something is different. Thinking about the mystique of an album like Hotel California makes me realize that not only were there not any albums being made like that when I was a dumb kid, but there definitely aren’t any being made like that now. It now has the ability to captivate me and it’s nice to put on and get lost in for a little while. Also - since death and taxes are our only certainties and as of this moment I still have a pulse, I guess the taxman will cometh and taketh. Can’t get rid of me that easily, Patreon.

Rachel Bartlett

Still well worth it for the content. More thought and prep goes into this than almost any other podcast out there.

Dave Carlson

Don Henley's Boys of Summer is really sad these days

Katie

...if you’ve ever seen the warmup clip of the band backstage a capella you’ve seen their talent

PETER GREER

I actually hope to design a very simple t shirt for the Eagles question. Hope to share ideas this week in the community board :-)

Brian Rooney

When does the Season of the Virus end and the Season of the Race Riots start?

James Reeves

”One of these nights” is the best groove I have ever experienced. The tightness!

Magnus Lanner

This podcast is saving my cultural year; I have 99 problems but this tax ain't one. I love Hotel California (both album and song). Usually the covers of the song suck, but I came to enjoy the one by Noblesse Oblige if someone wants to give it a try.

Saint-Lazare

Longtime listener. Love the podcast however in regards to the Eagles I discovered an even better audio experience: take a flat heat screwdriver and ram it into your ear canal. Ooowee. Oh, any chance of another Ask Bret Ep?

Gary Mentanko

my movie recommendations for bret easton ellis: Satyajit Ray's The Apu Trilogy. Pather Panchali's film score is the best of all time globally imao

Vaishesh Chowta

I'm not going anywhere!

Alex Bielovich

“One of These Nights” - how can you hear any piece of this song and not listen all the way to the end.. this song on its own is enough of a reason to rent a classic convertible, have a drink, and cruise down sunset on a Saturday night.

Trey Harrison

I’m more than happy to pay more for the sales tax. You scared me for a second! I thought you were saying you weren’t carrying on with it. I’m so relieved!

Lanark

I love you guys, more & more. Thank you for making 2020 f*cking awesome!

Trevor Wysling

Randy Meisner's "Try and Love Again" is one of my favorite Eagles songs.

Brent Davis

Was the Eagles routine already in place in 2015 when the shooting happened in Paris at the Eagles of Death Metal show? They do an interesting cover of Save a Prayer. But anyway, I recently read Mark Lanegan’s memoir, which dovetailed, but didn’t quite intersect, with Sizemore’s memoir in the 90s rock heroine scene. Jerry Stahl got a couple mentions and gave a quote to the jacket.

Chris McManimon

I hope Bret addresses Joel Schumacher's death. Just seems like there could be a story there. I love The Eagles.

bpvalentine

The Eagles: one of the top five most overrated and overplayed bands imo. BEE Podcast: my favorite podcast.

Scott Wilcox

There are many things I am resentful for having to pay taxes for but the BEE podcast (and the other artists I choose to support on Patreon) isn't one of them. I'm a Gold member for the long-haul, baby (yes I did just re-read "Glamorama" recently)! And the Eagles are fantastic!

Lothar Tuppan

Our Bret deserves better than this. Shame on you Mr Taxman. Shame, shame.

Benjamin Terpstra

Overrated, overbaked and overplayed. Like sober-era Aerosmith, the Eagles are one of the bands that makes me lurch for the tuner knob to stop the madness when they come on the radio. “Hotel California” is up there with “Alice’s Restaurant” and “American Pie” for most teeth grindingly annoying songs ever put to tape. I’m sure this makes me look like a cliched punk of a certain age, but, whatever, give me stadium-era Fleetwood Mac any day of the week over the fucking Eagles, man. Thanks for keeping this show going and thank you for keeping your opinions your own. It’s nice to not hear the party line of either side.

KCDC

I had The Eagles Greatest Hits eight-track in constant rotation in my Trans Am back in the day. That's the highest praise I can give any band. Keep on keeping on, Bret!

PeZ

I'll be there till the bitter end which I hope is a long time in the future.

Adam Long

Bret never got back to me about why Heartache Tonight was his favorite Eagles song.....

Keith Harmon

I love this podcast! Gelson’s rules!

Justin Grams

I don’t know if either of y’all know nick Pinkerton. But he runs a phenomenal monthly called Employee Picks. Great insignt/observations.

nick

I'm fd with LA taxes lol but with you guys to the end. Bret ever gonna move from LA? Haven't heard him address our crazy homeless problem. Gotta have em on Doheny and Sunset too.

Alexander Quattlander

The government can try to oppress me, but no tax, whatever the amount, will stop me from being a loyal BEE Patron.

David Eugene

Thanks Adam for your considerate, flattering thoughts;) Eagles will always be popular. Bob Dylan just praised them too. Someone once wrote: music does not always look as good as it sounds. I suppose David Bowie looked better than some of his music. I want to thank you and Bret for the effort you put in. The show is long, and stuffed with high quality content. I think Bret's fight/commentary on the decline of free speech and expression is terribly important. My favourite Pauline Kael review is on Sam Peckinpah's THE KILLER ELITE.

JEREMY ROBERTS

The podcast continues to be worth every cent. Really dug the conversation with Justine Bateman and looking forward to another guest during the Season of the Virus.

Zack Ravas

Worth it.

David

Cmon mate, only corporates are “passionate about working hard” 🤣

Ant

Never cared for the Eagles. I don't get them in the same way I never 'got' Van Halen or Rush. Or Bruce. Bruuuce! Or Aerosmith. Just don't get it. Maybe the Eagles number in the movie In America. I'll give you that. And maybe Joe Walsh in The Blues Brothers.

James Beatty

I will for sure keep listening and Don Henley’s solo work is better than all Eagles albums.

Thomas Rankin

for real though has the movie cocktail been discussed on the podcast already?

William F

The football team ?

William F

I will try a new Eagles album tonight. Have been listening to Violent Femmes all day. I don’t care about taxes honestly, I was just scared to see the word reluctant on the notifications from my phone, I was like please god don’t let them stop making the podcast! I love you. I love you all. Thank you for doing everything you do and sharing it with us. I am planning to shoot my second horror movie this year and I have been inspired a lot this last month by some stuff BEE has mentioned. Anyway, stay safe and thank you again!

Christian Leon

Don't think you'll lose any listeners, Adman... the BEE podcast is unique brain food for those that subscribe. The Eagles question is DONE though... for the love of Karen!

James Howard

This is all Donald Trump’s fault

Klintorious

As an European, I always paid added taxes, so it's all cool :).

Filipa de Araújo

Adam- Your post took me from being angry about the tax to being more engaged in the program. Well done on such a well worded message!

Matt Wall

‘They knew all the right people, they took all the right pills They threw outrageous parties, they paid heavenly bills’

Thomas Matich

i would also love a BEE deep dive into The Eagles’ THE LONG RUN & Fleetwood Max’s TUSK in a 1979 flashback episode 🔥

Nick Not Nolte

Bret’s insight, during the season of the virus especially, is worth its weight in gold. Taxman can’t bring me down.

Scotty Arms

this was freaky cause i was watching Ron Howard’s doc on the beatles’ touring years. and then i see the beatles again. Eh, it’s sales tax. podcast is worth that little extra, no biggie.

Nick Not Nolte

This is still the best deal on the Internet and worth every penny. Thanks for all the hard work, guys.
