Journalist Art Tavana co-hosts the premiere episode of our second season on Patreon. Art and Bret Easton Ellis discuss Bret's new book White, the disappearance of sex scenes from mainstream American movies, the erosion of Hugh Hefner's spirit from Playboy's brand and the perpetual intrigue of Tom Cruise.

Hey I’ve listened to all your cast. This one ranks up there with some of the best. Never heard of this guy, you guys work well together. Should for sure be on the show more. Thanks.

Jeremy Roper

I agree that the New Yorker interview with Bret was pathetic, but if you listen to the latest pod, Bret and Jerry discuss the David Milch profile which is pretty incredible - perhaps write off the whole publication just on the basis of one dumb SJW trying to 'gotcha' Bret.. I subscribe to it, and there's some fantastic writing in there for the most part - you just have to ignore the bits that are political (only about 20% of it - for instance read this - https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/04/08/the-day-the-dinosaurs-died - I've literally never felt cosmic dread in the way I did reading through the unimaginable destruction of the asteroid that took out the dinosaurs.. incredible journalism...

Sam Willis

Art referred to sex as sacred?? Did you meet this guy in church, Bret? Really not listening to your pod to get the puritan take.

David

I’m so bored hearing about how bored BEE is with Trump. I love all his writing including White, but I’m really getting sick of hearing about how sick of politics he is. I’d love to hear more about film and literary criticism, or better yet I’d love to hear more original fiction. Case in point- the interview kept me riveted, there was so much interesting content. The intro, however -almost made me cancel my subscription because I’m so over the T word. I appreciate the irony in that I agree with his apathetic attitude, but going one step further, I am not interested in “commiserating” further ad nauseum.

Mara Capozzi

Have to say, I miss the unique songs being featured in each episode.

Thomas Rankin

Entertaining and insighful as always, even if I tend to disagree with 50% of your opinions. The bit in which Brie Larson gets flak was...a bit weird, though. A.T: "She's probably the kind of person that hates me in real life. My appreciation of her is probably unhealthy and stupid". Fair enough. I guess we all approach personalities in an instinctual way. Ps: Can't wait for the film book, Bret.

Raúl

Loved the podcast and great to have you back. Also, watched Under the Silver Lake it’s excellent, didn’t know it was from the director of “It Follows”

Anthony Sisco

The "guest host" sounded like a pretentious douchebag - really hope he isn't invited back - although he might because it sounded like him and Bret had a rapport unfortunately...

Nick Strange

Art Tavana sounds like an over eager private school boy a little too excited to be talking to an adult. Offering to show a photo of how attractive his then girlfriend was as proof he didn’t need or want to have sex with Sky Ferreira was really embarrassing for the guy. He was rambling and uninteresting and seems to have his head up his own arse. Also seems to take whatever ephemeral bullshit he writes way too seriously.

Mark Cleary

Definitely -- he really grated on my nerves. I listened just to hear Bret's take on the subjects.

Nick Strange

Bought the book, mostly having enjoyed various interviews about it. The New Yorker is pathetic, but that's really nothing new. About the podcast: I wish you would . . . not so much *name* names, maybe, but drop a few more. And regarding the sex scenes and old Hollywood: say what you like about the Hayes Code, but it disciplined Hollywood into making films more witty, and indeed erotic than they would have been had directors been able to go for the cheap sex scene.

Michael Walsh

This podcast was so good!!!! Such a good, open conversation! Loved the end interaction between Adam and Art. :)

Florence

I was thinking that exact thing a few months back - uncanny.

Asa Oliver Skinner

Yeah it was awesomeness!

Erick

I listened to white on Audible. Really enjoyed it. And yeah, would love a BEE narrated American Psycho. Interesting that Bale speaks in Bret’s cadence in the movie.

Reservoir Frog

Maybe a 30 year special edition?

Erick

Just finished white! Great book. I really wish Bret would read American Psycho. I'd pay $20++ for that audiobook

Erick

Erik, look, if you're gonna play semantics... But seriously, that's an indicator. Actually, a pretty good one. But so, in my view, is a twentysomething dropping Missy Stanwyck's name in casual conversation. Art may not WANT to be gay, but I suspect he is. I think he's close to veering into "glass closet" territory, which Bret often says was his own status for a time.

John

I thought being gay was when you had your c**k in another mans arse.

Erik

A good one. Tasty little treat at the end for us Rock freaks.

JEREMY ROBERTS

Not a fan of this guest

Graeme

Also, I think he overcompensates. Classic symptoms. Again, I don't mean it as an insult. I think his conservative background/belief system is likely at odds with the thing that would make him most happy.

John

Shaun, would you ever think to, in conversation, compare someone with Barbara Stanwyck? I may be wrong, but, full disclosure, I'm gay myself, and I know my own when I hear them.

John

I don’t find what he said offensive, but for the record, I know about all of these actors and am straight and know them.

Shaun Katz

I really enjoyed this..shame about playboy, and jordan peele's joyless twilight zone...but happy GnR is getting Art's treatment. 💜💙🖤❤️ can't wait for old-school sexiness to come back, it will, it always does 💃🏽

jana

Cinephiles know who Barbara Stanwyck is. They may be a dying breed, but you'll find them watching TCM, buying Criterion disks, etc. Or, more realistically, the young ones pirating the movies. If you spend any time online where people discuss classic cinema, you'll find that it is not dominated by gays.

BUtterfield8

What part? Seriously, if I said something wrong I will delete it. All due respect to everyone, there are no straight guys living who know who Barbara Stanwyck is. And the way he described Elizabeth Taylor. I'm not judging him for it. It's just what I hear.

John

So I have to take issue with this discussion about the female perspective in movie (or tv) sex scenes being so played out. They both were saying how tired of it they are. What?!? How many years now are we claiming that this is so dominant? And, how would that even be possible with so few women directing? Could someone just name 10 examples of these movies so I can understand what has become so overdone? Admittedly, I don't see many new films, but I try to catch a few. I did see all of Girls and thought it was terrific. I hadn't seen those characters and that storytelling before. Some of the later episodes were even really beautifully shot. One of the things that Bret and Art failed to mention was how bent out of shape certain audiences got about Lena Dunham's unconventional body type being shown nude. That alone was new for tv sex. Sorry, I just don't understand how this female-gaze stuff can already be so tiresome.

BUtterfield8

Come on. That's so uncalled for.

BUtterfield8

Is Art always so...let’s just say...energetic? Listening to him reminds me of conversations I used to have in not-so-great habits days...

MikeE

Drudge would be a great guest for the pod. I used to listen to him often when he had a radio show. I like how he always links to Bret articles.

Jon A.

I didn't mind Art being interviewed, but I'm not sure he quite works as co-host. Someone should tell him to watch the up speak. It makes him sound like a 1983 Valley girl. Also, I think there's a pretty good chance he's closeted, which makes for a frustrating listen. Bret's monologue was brilliant and insightful as usual.

Enjoyed the Audible. You should consider interviewing the historian Martin Duberman, he's been prolific in the last few years.

JD

Fair play Bret you were dead sound & patient in Dublin.

Andrew

Perfect timing, my copy of White arrived in the mail today.
