George R. R. Martin is a fat, gross genre fiction hack! How ever much money GOT made and how ever many people watched that show...IT WAS SHIT! ABSOLUTE SHIT!

Antonio Primavera

Chuck seems to think that all young people are on the same page in order to justify young censors? Ohhh-kay.

Benjamin Terpstra

Two old queers chat about the dust in their farts. Bret, I signed up to hear this conversation specifically. I'm sad to see chuck wearing a shirt with the word "disappointed" on it. That would have been alright back when he was younger, but I think the thing that the two of fairies aren't seeing is that YOU are now in the cultural position of 'older brother', you each have a large following of young men who look up to you, and are now grown up, and for all of your whining and complaining, you have offered no greater alternative to the culture which disenchanted you. The both of you have now become like two complaining old women l i t e r a l l y talking about their husbands. Did you ever think that you would grow up to be a dusty old queer? Please don't think I'm against your homosexual natures, but just for the love of god look at the stereotype that you two have become. In fight club the line is "We're a generation of men raised by women, I'm wondering if another woman is really the answer we need," well the two of you have become the woman. You two women are now raising another generation of men. What do you stand for? Chuck's T-shirt says he's disappointed. Bret's millennial boy-toy likes to play fortnight. Ok, so what? And yes Bret, there is still such a thing as literary stardom. Have you heard of George R. R. Martin. By the way, he is a white male. God damn you have become out of touch. I really did like what Chuck said about trying to increase reading in the world. And you finished it off talking about gay porn. Then Chuck jumps back in and says pornography is a comforting thing prompting an "I do too!" You ninnies have been brainwashed. Ok, so, Chuck offers "Porn Utopia," as an ideal future. Maybe not wholeheartedly does he suggest it a real goal, but serious or not, that was what he offered as a vision. But then goes on to talk about the importance of conflict. And now the truth. Chuck is here to sell books. Well done gentle fags. Thanks for nothing.

E

Mehhh. Chuck was a jerk. "I don't give a fuck and I am annoyed that you give a fuck" seems his general point of view about everything.

James Francis

Good, because it did indeed look like it was aimed at him; BEE not finishing the podcast made it look like something unpleasant had happened

Matteo Persivale

Oh my God! Bret and Chuck ❤️ Dream threesome!

Matt L

I asked Bret about Chuck’s rant. He didn’t feel it was aimed at him. Felt Chuck was imagining a journalist sat in front of him. Agreed it was pretty intense tho.

Kovitch

Maybe you're right. To me his tone sounded very antagonistic toward Bret, and Bret's reaction made it seem like he interpreted in that way too. It was kind of awkward to listen to. But that's just, like, my interpretation man.

The Dude

He wasn’t angry with Bret. He was illustrating how he might handle this topic and line of questioning in general

Darren Ankenman

Well it's been a week, and I'm still confused as to why it seemed Chuck got so angry at Bret in the end. People are so scared to answer a politically related question these days. The trolls and SJWs are winning!

The Dude

The last five minute “meltdown”(?) of the episode was, as Bret terms it, a “nothing burger.” CP was re-enacting how he responded to the reporter’s questioning on politics.

James Reeves

My feed also stopped. But it's ok, I don't mind using the Patreon app instead of the Podcasts app.

Henry Magram

What happened to the forum on here?

Eric Macom

Hey guys, I've created a closed Facebook Group for the BEE Podcast, to have an additional place to discuss these podcasts. Join if you're so inclined! (Not you, Bret, we know you hate the internet). https://www.facebook.com/groups/BretEastonEllisPodcast/

Chris Carroll

Just started listening Palahnuik is one of my favs

Margaret Dennison

Yeah my first listen I couldn’t tell if he was talking to BEE or “talking to a reporter”. He was definitely speaking about reporters, and how they try to insert their agendas and inflame a debate or get a “gotcha” comment from him. The example that BEE brought up about how Chuck told a reporter, “ENOUGH!” set the rant off. At the end when chuck’s like .... “oh wait you’re going on a tour aren’t you?!” He’s joking with Bret saying basically... “good luck”😉 knowing all the shit BEE’s already gotten from this podcast.

David Eugene

Yeah Chuck was referring to journalists trying to push him to talk politics.

David Eugene

A ... WHITE... privilege perhaps!? 😂😂

David Eugene

This was a privilege to hear.

Jon A.

Born in '79 so I'm the tail end of Gen X. Yeah, each generation has the older group and the younger. Came of age during the grunge era, but never really considered myself gen x at the time. They were the older cooler kids who could drink and go to shows. But now I realize, I'm very much a part of that generation. I didn't even know what a millennial was until my early 30s, haha. Or I guess some call us Xennials, right? But you know what, it doesn't matter! They should just call the meh generation because nobody really gives a shit about the cusp. 😁Winona forever.

Phoenix

Interesting. Agreed, ending was kinda weird. Such a lovely conversation and then that happened, haha. And it blows my mind how someone that grew up in the 70s wasn't familiar with the Eagles. I mean, I thought they cool? 😁Dirty Laundry is great though. I'm particularly fond of Sunset Grill.

Phoenix

I had to re-link RSS feed. Mine didn't appear either, not sure why

Charlie C

Alienated young man meets charismatic extremist; together they form a group with other alienated young men to provide them a means of expressing their alienation and rage at the system. Fight Club? Or Al Quaeda?

Michael Walsh

This episode didn't appear in my RSS feed. Anyone else have this issue? Also, could someone please tell Bret that Wendy doesn't marry Halloran at the end King's "The Shining." He's said this a few times, and it isn't correct.

Graig Gilkeson

The thing that surprised me most was Chuck's and your parent's experience with EST, which was forever defined (in my mind) by the 1978 film "Semi Tough". I'll never forget the late Bert Convy as Werner Earhart in all but name, and Robert Preston's classic rebuke to him at the end: "Experience that, you asshole!"

Derek Malone

Yes. Bret always ask the last question about the Eagles. but after being offended, he just dumped him on Adam saying "Um, do you have anyting you want to ask Chuck?"

Brent Minder

That ending was intense and I see both sides of the spectrum - on one hand I wouldn’t want to get caught up in someone else’s agenda and have my words twisted, but who are we if we can’t express ourselves freely? I hate seeing what The New Yorker did - an interviewer with a preconceived narrative with no room for conversation. However, harping on it just gives them what they want, so with that said I’ll stop there and say fuck it. Great podcast episode.

Rachel Bartlett

Dumped him?

Florence

Great interview with a great preface. Classic ending. Chuck is one weird MFer and I love it. Just purchased Adjustment Day and WHITE!

Alexander Quattlander

I disagree. Listen to that last 5 mins again and tell me that wasn't directed at Bret. That's why Bret dumped him.

Brent Minder

Congratulations on a great season. Welcome to London and good luck with the book, can't wait to read it.

Harry Deansway

Fellow Cuspy here. I've seen us termed the Oregon Trail Generation.

Chad Daniel Russell

The woke/SJWs are just like the fucking PMRC but without God. They are very religious though ... like the bolsheviks were.

Poetical Gore

I cannot wait to dive into this.

Alex Bielovich

Would you consider posting a reference list of books/films/media cited in the discussions? That would be great to have...

Matt

Agreed, plus I don’t think there’s any point giving credence to a post on The Wrap. 90% online journalism is blog posts that happen to be under a recognisable masthead.

Christopher Hooton

In fact, I literally don’t believe that’s what he thinks.

Christopher Hooton

I can’t believe Chuck thinks left puritanism is analogous to punk 😂

Christopher Hooton

But he also said he reads The Daily Stormer and thinks it’s hilarious

Eric Macom

Last three minutes smells like sweat, cement and blood. And yes, Don Henley is the voice of summer.

David Cortijo

Bret, you need to remember that Chuck is one of those SJWs you complain about. I listened to him on Rogan and he constantly was worried if something he wrote was racist.

Poetical Gore

I just read that dopey article about Heathers from the Wrap which Bret referenced during his conversation with Chuck, and I was struck by how much of its satire the 24-year-old reviewer seemed to miss (or perhaps dismiss) on that viewing. I hope Bret keeps in mind that there are two sub-generations of Millennials. There are the PC Puritans which he rants about, but then there are those of us like me, born in the early 1980s who remember growing up during that last stretch of the analog era. As a child, I lived in a house with a rotary phone and no cable TV because back then that was still considered something “extra” if you could afford it. My high school years were in the 90s when Generation X was still leading youth culture. So, I think if you were born between 1980 and 1984, you have one foot in Gen X and the other in Gen Y, and for me the weight always leans heavier on the foot in Gen X.

Billy Schafer

Bret should direct the film version of "Snuff"

Zodiac Zach

I couldn’t click this fast enough. Great, great conversation! Been waiting for this literally meeting of the minds for years. Also, thought I knew every last bit of trivia about Fight Club, but evidently not. Thanks!

Reservoir Frog

I didn't see it that way as I don't think he went on Bret's show to sell books. Sounded like the hostility was directed towards journalists who try to goad their subjects into agreeing with their worldview and hatred for Trump

Klintorious

America's last two literary rock stars.

Klintorious

Great episode. Had to put on Dirty Laundry immediately afterward. Love ya BEE

Anthony Sisco

I just finished this up and holy shit, probably my favorite episode yet. The last three minutes was strange, but I really don’t think that was directed at Bret.

Eric Macom

What a great end to a great season! Damn, this episode makes me want to run to the library and check out just about a hundred books.

Michael Yakutis

Ending was weird and a bit intense. He wasn't directing it at Bret, but I felt like the anger was for Bret....did anyone else feel the same way ?

Billy Vega

What’s with the meltdown at the end?

Jose

OMG!!!! My two favorite authors, facing off!!!! I just came!

Joel Dameron

I have a love/hate relationship with Palahniuk's writing but know bigger fans have been waiting a long time for this. Should be really interesting. BEE's Miami signing is tonight...wish I could be there. Maybe swing through Orlando on a whim when you're done? Edit: Fantastic episode.

Damien Smith

It’s an easter miracle!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️

Senseless

Love BEE and love Palahniuk. Can't wait to listen to this one.

Ethan Perritt

Fuck yes!
