The B.E.E. Podcast - 1/25/19 - Jay McInerney - SILVER
Added 2019-01-25 19:05:58 +0000 UTC
On the 100th episode of the B.E.E. Podcast, novelist Jay McInerney and Bret Easton Ellis discuss the frustrations of adapting Bright Lights, Big City into a movie, doing cocaine, the thrilling minimalism of Raymond Carver and the relationship between writer and editor.
I was notified that I made the final round for consideration for soft skull press last October - but it fell through :(

Yeah, I been working for 4 years on the Bright Lights Big City of the skateboard culture set - the great American skateboard novel (Jay was the reason I became a writer) - hopefully XXX press doesn’t pan it and I’m hopelessly waiting — he says though, that he doubts there could now be a cultural novel with a three year lapse delivering something au courant — well I’m pretty confident I’ve written the great American skate novel (something that does not exist) I just fear some milquetoast grad student on the east coast with better connections beats me, with their prosaic prose — love this episode, Jay is a goat 2 me

Regarding the conversation at the end of white male privilege, many white males grow up dirt poor so the participants of this conversation are making huge assumptions based on their singular experiences.

Great episode. It can’t be easy, interviewing someone you’ve known for decades, but this was lively and illuminating. It would have been fun to hear what you two thought about seeing your work become unlikely stage musicals.

Home run. All the writer episodes have been near perfect but this was one was completely unguarded & often hilarious. Karyn Kusama episode is still my personal fav (the monologue edged this one out) but this was up there. 100 more please!!

Worth it for the Edith Wharton discussion. NB: if you feel you aren't threatened by the 'social justice' mob, maybe it's because you're part of it.

Amazing. Loved when Jay brought up Hemingway in the 'all great writers need humour' discussion. It's always more interesting when Bret's viewpoints are intelligently challenged

Hi Bret. Doing god's work here. I do have one small request. Could you please add metadata to your audio files? At least episode title, genre and author name. It would make listening and organisation for me much easier. Thanks.

This was terrific. Would have been fun to hear Bret’s thoughts on Jay marrying a Hearst. And Jay’s for that matter
