Thanks for answer about poetry. I'll think I'll take that - some of your prose is like a big poem - all that's different is the typography. Ferlinghetti said ages ago that modern poetry is really prose in the typography of poetry.

JEREMY ROBERTS

I listened to this whole thing and I’m not sure why.

Martin sanchez

I wish he had elaborated a bit about my (not digressive, very short) questions, but to hear him saying my name was thrilling enough. 2019 looks like a very interesting year for this podcast; can't wait for more. Also, I want a T-Shirt with Aesthetics over Politics! in it.

Raúl

It’s everything that was wrong with music in the mid ‘70s and why Punk was necessary.

Ian Schultz

Just saw this...Jesus, 70s cocaine soft rock is what dreams are made of. I have a present for you, it's called Yacht Rock. You'll love it. Happy 2019 and enjoy.

Phoenix

Loved it. Didn't ask a question myself but found everyone else's questions mostly very interesting, so thanks everyone. My favourite bit was the discussion around BEE style writers. Always wondered if writers could see their influence in others, or even recognise a style in their own work.

Clarke

Thanks. As hard as it is keeping up with tv and movies finding great music is maybe even harder. For me it’s almost 100% word of mouth

Chuck

i think you are referring to david's upcoming book "sleeping with strangers: how the movies shaped desire" which bret mentioned. -adam

Re: 2018 music. A few years ago on the podcast bret mentioned pauline kael's famous one-time-only film viewing habit. Working as an A&R in music biz for close to 20 years this resonated and i figured it a fantastic way to hone my own critical ear. So started doing this with LPs in the one-time-only method with LPs from the end of 2016 (album format for the same grievances one might have to the changes in popular opinion around the art form of LPs vs eps/singles as there might be to movies vs television) If anyone here is looking for new music suggestions i've been keeping lists of LPs you might want to check out (or ignore!). In 2018 there are 325, you can view list here > https://bit.ly/2ApHaLS (these include over 50 records i didnt fit into the previous year) and in 2017 there was 336 albums listed here > https://bit.ly/2SDcoGx ... Artic Monkeys had one of the only albums that i couldn't stop repeat listening to in 2018 but based on bret's response on the xmas ep i'd recommend also checking out King Krule, Methyl Ethel, Crack Cloud, Nai Palm, Nick Hakim, Benjamin Booker, Parquet Courts. PS: i hate having a rating system (and it doesn't reflect what i think of an act in a live setting, only the single album listen) but it's a quick way to reference the favs from the duds. Enjoy!

Happy New Year Bret, from Brussels. Happy listener - best podcast out there (with Desus and Mero)

Nicholas Vinocur

Loved this episode. Bret. Have you ever read some of the film criticism of John Simon ? He has several books. He will smartly take down films like Taxi Driver. Fun reading for sure. I think he was a critic for the New Yorker for years. Another untouchable film critic is Jonathan Rosenbaum. His insanely in depth reviews are archived on his website. He used to write for the Chicago Reader I believe... and he’s published some cool books about film. Excellent critic

Sleeping with Strangers. It’s not out yet. Soon. You can pre-order on Amazon

Darren Ankenman

Hi - I posted this in the Community, but might have better visibility here: In the Q&A ep - which was great btw - Bret recommended a soon-to-be-released book on film, I think by David Thomson? Anyone recall the specific recommendation?

ODB

Ouch this was as brutal as I was expecting. I lasted until the ‘thoughts on The Killers?’ question. Please never again.

MikeE

I realize you just answered 180 questions, however, if you read this: a listener asked you to comment on the films of director Shane Curruth - ‘Primer’ & ‘Upstream Color’. I would be interested in your comments on those movies as well - maybe another time. Also, it would be fascinating to hear you interview the author of ‘Trouble Boys’ or the legendary Westerberg himself. *And, a listener asked you about Bradford Cox, singer from indie rock outfit Deerhunter; check out ‘Halcyon Digest’ and ‘Monomania’. Cheers! By the way, I couldn’t give a s^it about who they kicked off Patreon - didn’t even hear about it. Free speech is about the government restricting speech, not a corporation, I work for a hospital and I can’t walk around talking about my dick all day. That IS restricted. Cheers!

Thanks for answering my question, Bret. And yes, Trouble Boys referred to The Replacements biography written by Bob Mehr. Great to hear your thoughts on it. I found it bittersweet too. My girlfriend and I got a giggle out of you guys trying to pronounce my name as well haha. It’s pronounced Ian, just with Gaelic spelling. Anyway, great podcast and happy new year.

Taking Woodstock

Ian Schultz

Dan Waters is great, he wrote Heathers. He certainly wasn’t my screenwriting teacher!

M. Nero Nava

Sorry meant to get in two quick questions. I would love to hear what your thoughts on the follow shows Strange Angel (sex, black magic, left wing libertarianism! but nobody watches it) and Riverdale / Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac suck ass, death to 70s cocaine soft rock.

Ian Schultz

I’m friends with Dan Waters who wrote large chunks of it and he is awesome

Ian Schultz

Bret said my name!!! Really, this podcast was a treat. As a fan, appreciate you taking the time to actually read all of our questions and answer them honestly (as always and wouldn’t expect anything else) and also enjoyed hearing the Trump argument brewing near the end. What can I say, I’m easily entertained. Thought of a couple of additional guests that I think would be great. Courtney Love, writer Kelly Oxford and novelist Alicia Erian who wrote Towelhead (one of my favorite novels). Would also love to hear your thoughts on the work of director Adrian Lyne. Not sure if you’re a fan of his movies, but he’s one of my favorite directors, especially the sappy, yet fucked up dynamic of Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke in 9 1/2 Weeks. Why I love this movie so much, I don’t know. Also, would enjoy hearing you cover the genre of 80s noir film like Body Heat and Dressed to Kill, etc. Even though they can be cheesy as hell, there’s something completely appealing about them and if they’re available to stream, I can’t not watch them. I’m a child of the 80s so that era pulls on my nostalgic heart strings. Looking forward to next season. Happy New Year.

This was a lot of fun to listen to - bummed I missed the opportunity to ask a question, so please do it again sometime!

David Wasnak

Got a kick of Bret reading my questions. I was so worried my question was too silly being about Batman but loved the response from Bret and Adam. Thanks for a great podcast guys!

Ryan Hyde

Happy new year from Spain. Waiting for white. You discovered me a great song, China (Red Rockers) Great podcast. A lot of fun!

David Cortijo

Great concept. Hope you do it again in 6 months. My question is: Why are there no films set at Woodstock '69?

LRS

About a podcast with Houellebecq : I think it would be amazing since you're probably the two best writers of our time. I know he was in New York last year for a gallery opening. But anyway I hope it's allowed to smoke in your office, because otherwise...

Léo S.

Yes! That’s the one. Saved me from listening again.

S-M Robinson

You mean 'The Girls', Emma Cline maybe?

Harman Virdee

Can someone remind me of the book he mentioned about the woman who gets involved with a cult?

S-M Robinson

Thanks for your answers Bret ! Too bad Vinyl was cancelled, I'm sure the Eagles would have made a great cameo during season 2 ;-)

Léo S.

Great episode! Just purchased My Year of Rest and Relaxation - good tip! (Already read Eileen which I liked but perhaps not loved).

Mikael Pawlo

Happy New Year Bret, Adam wish you guys the very best for the year and looking forward new shows and the new book

CP

Great episode again!

I totally wish that I had asked a question. I was going to and then got sidetracked with the holidays. One thing that I have been wondering is what Bret has been watching with respect to classic cinema. He keeps mentioning it in passing, but then doesn't elaborate. (I'm not quite done listening to this long episode, so if this was asked, sorry.) Must also mention that this is the worst commenting interface imaginable. I think this every time that I comment here. Maybe in 2019, we could take the discussion to a better platform, while continuing with Patreon for payments.

BUtterfield8

Liked this pod, looking forward to 2019 and White.

Erik

I wish i had asked a question. Great listen so far.

Michael Bronspigel

RE: Hudson Hawk. One of the writers of Hudson Hawk also taught my screenwriting class in film school. He was easily the worst teacher I’ve ever had, and maybe the worst writer ever. His claim to fame was Moonlighting and Meet Joe Black. I resent and curse listener who suggested that Bret’s work had any resemblance to this awful movie (and it’s writing). Please, people,

M. Nero Nava

Thanks for a great year Bret!

So glad to know that this podcast works out financially. It might be a niche, for now, but I am sure it will grow overtime. This bold choice is truly brave and trailblazing. Happy to have been offended in 2018 and I am looking forward at being offended again in 2019. Best from Amsterdam.
