The Bret Easton Ellis Show

Hey Patrons,

I wanted to share this here for anybody who may have missed it. This is an edited video cut of the James Vanderbeek interview.

Please let us know how you feel about this format.

Thanks,

No -emphatically no- it is not about money. If it were about money, the corporations would enforce a universally bland product, and also shut down the very many entertainment industry players that insult Trump, his family and advisors, and the millions in middle America who voted for him. No. It is about the progressivism which amounts to a religion for many, especially in Hollywood, and which has its list of sins, sinners, saints and sacred cows. And God help anyone who transgresses against the established church. It is the same religion whose tyrannical rule has debased American university education.

This interview wkuld

Ian Townsend

BEE is a star. The more he talks the more I want to listen. He needs a daily podcast and so does Camille Paglia. They also need to interview each other.

Michael Bronspigel

It is in one way less egocentric than a pod cause when you go too far you can see it in you and the guest that shut the fuck up i cant even remember what Youre talkin about. Also it workes with earphones and lights out. Face and eye movements add a lot to the genuicity to it all. Also subject were great, and you two are so unalike yet so Damn alike each other. For some reason, its a friendship i enjoy watching, cause i cant see where it is, maybe a father and son thing or a dream snd jealousy of one of you is having of the other. Anyway, i love you bret, you sure is a sharp mind in your format.

Erik

This format is great. This should be released simultaneously with the audio-only version.

Shawn Adams

Terrific

I actually quite liked the video format for this interview - it was edited nicely, I liked the intimacy of the location and seeing facial expressions helped make a few 'awkward' moments less awkward. Perhaps something to do more of in future with higher profile interview subjects ?

Bazayer

I like the room, assuming it is Mr Ellis' office, where he works and writes.

Samuel Setenyi

Loved it! Could do with a cosier room though. James looked like he had been summoned to the heads office.

George

Platinum members should be rewarded with claymation videos.

Romeo Delta Charlie

I dig it

I just recently re-read Lunar Park to see if after years of pouring over the podcast brets unique monologue tone might be baked into the narration in my head. (it was) Could access to unfiltered vision have a more sinister impact? Will video ruin the eye rolls in my mind and is this a rabbit hole I want to go down? (likely will)

Ant

I love this show in any medium I can get it.

Senseless

Really liked it. Added a whole 'nother level to the conversation. Stick with it, I say.

Scott Ewing

Love it more video please, I’m as pleased as punch as we say in the UK

Paul Thrush

Just as I imagined it... Fox News is on in the background and there is a library copy of Play It as It Lays on top of the stack of books. Return that to the Buckley School, Bret. In all seriousness, fun to see the faces, but I appreciate the audio format. I like the freedom to do other things while I listen to podcasts.

BUtterfield8

I like it. It's good to see faces! Will still listen to audio.

JEREMY ROBERTS

I vote for audio only with live stream Thursdays.

Dustin

I've always been about the podcast and am happy with just that, but if this isn't too much of an extra strain, I'm happy to check it out too if released simultaneously

DominusRex

I love this format. I hope to see more of The Bret Easton Ellis Show!

D Michael Hardy

Love the video version of the podcast. It’s definitely something you should do more of in the future

Antoni

I prefer seeing Bret occasionally roll his eyes rather than having to imagine it.

One last thought - the new Norm McDonald show on Netflix is a perfect example of what NOT to do - way too short, slightly awkward.. the hokeyness / relaxed quality of the original version on youtube was far superior, also it's important to not under estimate the mental siloing that goes on when we, the listenership, think about our media consumption - my completion rate on the BEE podcast is literally 100%, I never ever fail to make it all the way through an episode, whereas if it was a show that was 40 minutes in length I really would be just gutted.. at the very least, there should always be the full length audio version of the conversation available.. the digressions and side bars are the best parts of the conversations for me, and naturally those are the first thing to be snipped when shortening something down to make it watchable - I mean who really is gonna bother to watch the 40 minute version of the JVB when they could pick the 1hr 10 minute (or whatever) full audio version??? So really, what's the point in doing both? I'm not saying that some BEE subscribers won't be into this idea, I just think that you're gonna end up making things way too complicated for yourself and be shaving profits off when there's just not enough of a need. Let me finish on a very positive note by saying I absolutely ADORE this podcast, it's one of my biggest cultural highlights when I get the message that a new ep is available and I love the current format as it is, so please keep up the great work!

Sam Willis

just because bret is of course a big deal, I can understand how the slighty hokeyness of the production values etc. might feel a little self conscious, but seriously, that is a big big part of the appeal. the 'Bret Easton Ellis show' IMO feels an attempt to try and be more 'empire' where as 'The BEE podcast' is much more post-empire.

Sam Willis

I'd much much rather have more frequent episodes, down and dirty - the livestream gets us 'close enough' to the above highly polished / nicer camera version above. also, there's a charm to the slight hokeyness of todd holding the camera and chiming in, IMO, the worst thing you can do would be to get too polished / slick, I'm guessing that for most of us, the rough edges / personal vibe you currently have going on are actually making us feel good about paying the patreon contributions each month - it's basically just being a fly on the wall to these candid chats in your flat!

Sam Willis

I like the immersion of the 90 minutes plus podcast. What’s the point of a “show”? Maybe if you hire Paul Shaffer. He’s available. Best,

Mauricio Alejandro Gonzalez Lara

listened to on the go / while doing the dishes / exercising / commuting etc.

Sam Willis

personally I really really don't think it's necessary to do this higher quality / multi angle video with each show - given you want to feature non super famous guests, it'd be totally overkill to do it every time. with someone like JVB I get it, cos he's handsome and the biggest name you've had on - if you'd had video for the Kanye one, or maybe some of the bigger pop stars that you've featured, then maybe it'd be worth doing it. But really, I'd say in the cost / benefit analysis, that you're not really adding enough extra value to us as members to bother the extra effort / expense it would require of the BE extended team. For instance, look at the failure of Alec Baldwin's recent talkshow pilot which was widely canned for feeling unnecesary - the podcast / just talking / audio format is so good because it can be

Sam Willis

Big fan of this format, Bret. Love seeing you and the guest.

Jared Bentley

This is great - license it to Netflix. However, for the Patreon player, I prefer sound only due to my dog walking listening pattern and omg I have turned into an old lady haven’t I!?

Mikael Pawlo

Really dig it. And is the video component of this now called "The Bret Easton Ellis Show"?

Thomas Rankin

I like it. The showing of different angles is good, much better than the single shot of the entire room I have seen in other podcast videos. It is interesting to see you engaging with another person and to see your mannerisms.

Natalie Williams

I like it. I like it a lot.

Gillon

Hey guys -- I have worked with JVB and found him to be just a terrific guest star. Very professional, completely normal (which is not as common as you might think) and a sweet, sweet guy. Great choice of guest.
