The B.E.E. Podcast - 8/23/18 - Matt Tyrnauer - GOLD

Comments

Loved this episode. I bought the Scotty book after reading this but after reading the part when he was a child, I felt the same way that Bret felt that Tyrnauer felt about a victim narrative. I had to put it down but the documentary sounds more interesting. Grant's daughter just a few months ago rebuked the gay rumours which is why I relistened to this episode. Great guest!

One of your best shows Bret.

Also, the comparisons of the high schools and the universities were very interesting. Overall, more than just a good episode.

Good episode. High-quality discussion and engagement from Mr Ellis and Mr Tyrnauer, worthwhile topics, interesting light shed on the Golden Age of Hollywood and also some details about Vanity Fair before post-Empire that are not exactly unbelievable, but feel totally distant today.

Just finished the podcast-my fav episode to date & I couldn’t agree with you more about the current state of homosexual characters & representation in current film. I am honestly a bit shocked by Jeanine Basinger’s reaction to Matt’s film. Back in the 90s I actually wrote her regarding a few inquiries I had and she actually promptly got back to me and a few of my questions regarded sexuality in films of the 20s & 30s. I notice, though, a trend with classic sounds film fans slightly older than me lately (I’m close to 50), to really be pushing back lately against any ‘gay subtext’ or narratives. I’ve lost interest in dealing with a lot of fellow fans for this in the last few years & it surprises me since supposedly it’s all these progressive individuals. I find her reaction surprising but she seems to be following some sort of trend.

Great Episode! I can’t wait to see the Scotty Bowers docu-I did not know that about Walter Pidgeon (a fav of mine) and great Lucy story.

One of your best episodes and I mean it. Coming from a family who votes for the Oscars, I'm on the fence on it. On one hand, it is a ridiculous attempt to gain ratings and it dilutes the prestige of actually winning an award (not to mention what objectively defines a "popular" film?). And all of the points you brilliantly point out. On the other hand, I don't care that much because the Academy Awards are just that, awards. I always want the best person/film to win but it's not the end of the world to me if the one I didn't want wins (though it can irk me) or a new category is added. And I suppose the plus to all of this is more screeners. Do I think it will make an impact and uptick ratings? No. As for Black Panther, it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you don't create the category, the outrage crowd becomes outraged because "How come Hollywood doesn't celebrate Black Panther?" (despite making record profits and high critical approval). If they do create a popular category and Black Panther obviously wins, the outrage crowd becomes outraged because "How come Hollywood thinks Black Panther is just a popular film and not a real film?" To be honest, maybe it would be a good thing if the Academy Awards' ratings fell into obscurity. Maybe it should just be a nice little awards show where people in the industry (most of whom aren't rich/elite) celebrate one another for one night a year. And if cinephiles want to join in on the fun, so be it. But like any celebration, no one should feel pressured into making it any more than what it should be.

The main reason I don't watch the Oscars anymore is far more practical than ideological or artistic. They don't stream them. I'm 41 and imagine it's even more true for those younger than I. If they did I'd still be reliably watching despite the other factors mentioned in the podcast.
