Vapid? How's that.

2018-07-30 10:42:46 +0000 UTCI'm not sure this requires any courage; I think this is just Bret being Bret, being a free thinker and saying what's on his mind.

2018-07-29 18:39:05 +0000 UTCIt's hard to take your complaints seriously after hearing Bret go into such detail on why he admired Hereditary. Would you be willing to consider the possibility that you may have missed something on the first viewing, or that you may not be spiritually prepared for such a challenging movie. No, of course not. Jon A. is perfect already isn't he.

2018-07-29 18:37:50 +0000 UTCDefinitely the strongest podcast of the season so far, fuelled by the purity of an exceptional movie. The opening track is a revelation, I never knew Kim Carnes had a second hit.

2018-07-29 18:35:32 +0000 UTCBrett, you sit with an empty seat between you and your friend? That’s so vapid.

2018-07-05 02:36:50 +0000 UTCMy word, in 2018, Bret is completely peerless as a film critic...

2018-07-02 20:31:16 +0000 UTCI saw Hereditary this wknd based on BEE’s recommendation. I loved it. It had serious emotional resonance and was very creepy.

2018-07-01 10:50:21 +0000 UTCI so want to know if Bret has seen Ben Wheatley's 'Kill List' - probably the last horror film to genuinely disturb me. So unsettling you find you can't sit still. It has an ending in a similar vein to Hereditary but works better for me. Personally I could've done without Ann Dowd's explanation in those final few shots of Hereditary.

2018-06-30 21:33:39 +0000 UTCBret, for the last few years I have found your podcast to be the only commentary on American movies worth listening to. Thank you for your courage, your effort, and your marvelous hard-boiled elocution.

2018-06-30 10:43:11 +0000 UTCbill hader’s “barry” on hbo is totally worth the watch. trust me. this is coming from a person who was disappointed in breaking bad, mad men, & 1st season westworld.

2018-06-30 07:57:06 +0000 UTCI found HEREDITARY too close in tone/style/substance/philosophy as THE VVITCH. Aster's short films are wonderful, and I suspect a big problem for me with his feature is that it lacked precision in pacing (whereas camerawork, music, blocking all felt sturdy and confident). Both of these A24 horror films essentially end right when things get interesting. Be it a levitation finale or a stunning mosaic of worshippers gathered beneath their new leader, each story ends at the start of the third act. Hence, I felt less annoyed by the illogic or lack of scares and more irritated by what felt like an incomplete tale.

2018-06-29 21:29:54 +0000 UTCHereditary - too long, too campy, too much robotic exposition. The father character barely registers, and Toni C. plays a hateable nutso. Overall I still kinda like it for its aspirations and approach. I think the truth of the matter is more in-between those who are really passionate about loving it or trashing it.

2018-06-28 22:04:47 +0000 UTCI agree. The second half lost me in that it became predictable and I only remember feeling disappointed as I had been looking forward to seeing a new horror film that I actually liked. That being said I do want to revisit it eventually and I look forward to what the director decides to do next.

2018-06-28 19:54:52 +0000 UTCGood pod! I first heard of Hereditary by accidentally listening to a piece from soundtrack on Spotify. Now after this pod, I want to watch!

2018-06-28 19:30:12 +0000 UTC"Cancer and illness, financial disaster, and the mainstream media scare me more than anything I will ever find on a screen at the Arclight." 😂😂😂... I fuckin loved the first half of Hereditary. The twist set my expectations high and then I don't feel it delivered on those expectations, so ultimately I was disappointed by the film. However, now I want to rewatch it. --Also, what the hell is up with this font? Is it just me or did Patreon switch to cramped cursive? Going blind trying type...

2018-06-28 19:05:40 +0000 UTCI saw Hereditary at the AMC Empire in Times Square. My viewing of the picture ended up being tainted by an awful print. The images looked like mud, and during the night scenes it was difficult to see what had occurred on screen. However, the audience around me kept screaming and jumping in their seats; and, yes, laughing. I think the laughter was a way for the audience to release their collective tension and definitely not the sort of laughter one directs at something they loathe. Hereditary didn’t scare me but it did leave me with a sense of unease.
