2018-07-14 11:00:09 +0000 UTCYes. It's the same character. But he has aged and changed, as have the rest of the characters from the earlier book who are also in Imperial Bedrooms. They've been diminished and corrupted in various ways by the passage of time and life in LA. So, in another sense, he is not "the same Clay." Clay also features in Lunar Park, but that's a whole other story.

2018-07-10 21:00:13 +0000 UTCIs Clay from Less Than Zero the same Clay from Imperial Bedrooms?

2018-05-22 20:26:35 +0000 UTCThis is just a thought, based off what I myself have often done: Your millenial friend was significantly exaggerating his friends' reactions to his take on Lady Bird and Get Out. Perhaps just for the sake of the conversation, or maybe even to impress you. I only say this because, being a millenial, I know so few people who take such a hard-line as described, and so inherently flock to ideology and eliminate the possibility of further discussion. Maybe I'm just lucky in my friends, but this common perception of the millenial as comrade snowflake... obviously there's no smoke without fire but I hardly think it's something that affects the majority of my generation.

2018-05-18 18:57:03 +0000 UTCHi Jason, yes indeed, big fan of the BEE podcast. A healthy antidote to the horrors of Web 2.0 ;)

2018-05-04 04:56:28 +0000 UTCWelcome back! So glad you covered Twin Peaks! And PTA! I think you should give There Will Be Blood another watch. I enjoyed it more 11 years after its release. Maybe Ladybird during the Trump era was reminiscent of Lost In Translation during the W era? ….both good films but maybe something more behind the praise?

2018-05-02 08:16:12 +0000 UTCI would like to suggest meeting the brilliant author Tom McCarthy on the podcast. His first novel "Remainder" is a postmodern mile stone of literature and has received a widely acknowledged review by Zadie Smith ("Two Paths for the Novel") that deals with the question of identity politics and subjective authenticity -- "Remainder" being an example for writing a novel about an emphatically inauthentic individual. In this instance alone I see quite an overlapping with the writing endeavors (with and against narrative) of the ground breaking work of Bret Easton Ellis. The latest novel of Mr. McCarthy is more of a highbrow approach to the current culture and the problem of making sense of it as an academic, or rather ex-academic who is working as a corporate ethnologist in the basement of a London based counseling firm. “Satin Island” addresses the intellectual enterprise of getting a grip on society, both philosophically and economically. I for my part would be VERY interested in a conversation between the two gentlemen in order to hear in how far Tom McCarthy actually shares Bret Easton Ellis’ attention for mainstream media content and for cinema as a symptom for the political and intellectual situation. Furthermore a conversation between these two exceptional authors would be an interesting occasion to talk about literature and the promises and limits of fiction and narrative on this great podcast.

2018-05-01 09:12:57 +0000 UTCCould you invite Fred Stoller onto the BEE Podcast? (1) You talked about “I’m Dying Up Here” as a guilty pleasure. I think Stoller would have interesting insights. (2) Stoller is LA-based. (3) Stoller is really knowledgeable in 70s and 80s culture and movies. (4) Stoller is a published author (‘Maybe We’ll Have You Back’) with nothing to sell.
James Reeves
2018-04-29 21:49:31 +0000 UTCSmartest film and cultural critic around. Thank you Bret. Welcome back.

2018-04-28 12:38:09 +0000 UTCHallelujah! You've been sorely missed. I'd be interested to hear where the new Blade Runner went wrong for you. I loved it in many ways, yet am certain I would have loved it more if they had told any story without Harrison Ford. The man has no shame. Do you consider 2049 a successful foray into the mega-budget art-house scene?

2018-04-26 19:22:28 +0000 UTCBret, really happy you’re back. Saying it like it is. Completely agree with your thoughts on the films you mention though I did think Three Billboards had some stock characters in its supporting cast.

2018-04-26 13:59:47 +0000 UTC.......How did Bret not mention the film Good Time?
Kevin Burzynski
2018-04-26 03:52:23 +0000 UTCI think it would be near impossible because I don't think he does interviews anymore, but if he could be convinced, I would love a podcast with Lars von Trier.

2018-04-23 20:05:48 +0000 UTCYou are of course welcome to your opinion of Get Out, but I was surprised to hear you demonstrate on the podcast that you didn't understand the plot (the Armitages perform brain, not eye transplants--think Being John Malkovich) even after seeing it twice. When you take this into account I think that actually speaks for Get Out rather than against it as a so-called "prestige" work. Its critique of white fetishization of black people and culture that is objectively, demonstrably true on a cultural level, is a sophisticated (not to mention comedic) use of your beloved horror genre. I enjoy being a patron of your podcast but you might revisit the movie or wikipedia page before delivering additional analysis of the work.

2018-04-21 05:03:54 +0000 UTCGreat to have you back! Wondering where you been!! I'd love to hear you talk with Steven Soderbergh sometime in the future. His career spans every type of genre and mode of filmmaking - big budget studio films, oscar films, micro budget diy, television. Would be fascinating to hear you two riff on the state of the filmmaking industry.

2018-04-19 19:38:51 +0000 UTCStephen, if you still haven't figure it out: go to the rss link (in the overview tab, on the right) then in your podcast application there should be a menu item for "add podcast" or "podcast url" — paste it in there. I'm not sure about Google Play but both iTunes (mac) and Podcast Addict (android) have this feature.

2018-04-19 16:19:55 +0000 UTCMorrissey is now a LA-based, too, correct? This would be exciting to pull off!
James Reeves
2018-04-19 16:17:32 +0000 UTCWhile I enjoyed it, I do think the acclaim for Get Out is a product of our current political climate, but I can't get on board with that sentiment for Lady Bird. That movie was a joy to watch - even though your assessment of the pacing and it being like a giant montage is correct. It didn't matter for me, I loved it and I think a lot of people felt the same way. I don't think Get Out is worthy of all the praise, BUT I was still glad to see a low budget horror movie in the best picture nominees... which never happens.
Claire Ginocchio
2018-04-19 14:56:32 +0000 UTCGreat stuff! Would have loved to hear your thoughts on PTA's "Inherent Vice". Surely it is stylistically more similar to "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia" than all other later films?
Filip Kruse
2018-04-19 08:52:03 +0000 UTCPlease bring Frank Ocean onto the podcast, hearing you mention the possibility got me hard. Another great guest would be Sam Raimi!

2018-04-19 03:53:46 +0000 UTCGreat episode... “.... as if Three Billboards was a public service announcement made by a committee of comrades”
Greg Comiskey
2018-04-19 02:45:42 +0000 UTCOkay, so are we really doing this guest request thing? Everyone will roll their eyes, but Morrissey just went public this week with a critical diatribe against the London mayor and their spike in knife and acid attacks, that sounded like something from Clint Eastwood's character in Gran Torino. Morrissey would be a difficult and frustrating but fascinating interview.

2018-04-19 00:08:03 +0000 UTCLove it love it love it!!!! Bret’s commitment and passion and his voice make me listen to every episode multiple times. Bret - take care of yourself and please make this a ritual. Would you ever consider doing topics outside your comfort zone? Architecture? Travel? Food? Autobiographical snippets? I just love listening to your insights- regardless of agreement— your arguments are always rational and incredibly articulated. I love your existence.
James Reeves
2018-04-18 23:05:16 +0000 UTCHappy you're back, interested hearing the take on Ringwald but I'm even more curious about a further comment on the intense last several months for previous guest Rose McGowan. You talked a little bit about the #MeToo stuff, but since you have had some encounter (maybe it had just been through that interview) with her, and she has been really prominent, I'm curious about your observations. As you were talking about McDormand's character in Three Billboards, I actually thought of her and McGowan sort of sharing that same type of pain.

2018-04-18 12:30:31 +0000 UTCBret, you're the only voice of reason when it comes to what film making has become today, your commentary on the film industry for the last 5 years has been nothing but the truth, I so badly wish you could make your own films and show them how its supposed to be made, idealism is the killer of art in contemporary cinema
