Battle Royale Voting Results
Added 2025-03-27 21:37:40 +0000 UTCWith 105 votes cast, we're closing the voting. Below are the results in reverse order, with a little commentary on each.
17. Jon. 300. Abstracted combat mechanic. Bonuses for combat descriptions.
I'm guessing that everyone had the same instinct we did. 300 is too crunchy to make a great reroll. I think even with Jon's mechanic the game would bog down a bit into the details and logistics of combat. This would be a fun one to do at home, but probably not ideal for radio.
16. Paulo. 13 Days. Historical simulation.
I'm really into this concept, but I think this movie is just too obscure, and the idea of playing with real-world history and realpolitik doesn't appeal to everyone.
15. Paulo. Mortal Kombat. Kombat with Pokemon type mechanic.
This was always kind of a nonsense suggestion but I kind of love it. Seems you guys were less into it.
14. Paulo. Mortal Kombat. Single roll combat mechanic.
Or maybe you guys just aren't that into the idea of us doing Mortal Kombat? There's still one more pitch for MK in the list although, spoilers, it didn't finish that high either.
13. Jon. Truman Show. Truman NPC. Truman already knows he's in a show.
This is the movie with the biggest discrepancy in voting between our two pitches. I suspect that the concept of Truman already knowing he's in a show, while a bit of interesting film analysis, weakens this movie's possibility as a fun reroll.
12. Paulo. Neverending Story. Kid reading is a PC.
Honestly a pitch that I was pretty lukewarm on as well. Love Neverending Story and I would definitely consider it for the show. But the fact is having the kid reading the book as a PC probably just doesn't make any sense.
11. Jon. The Abyss. Alien interaction mechanic.
Probably for the best we don't do this one, as I think it would steal the thunder of Andy's version of Sphere that he's been wanting to run for a while.
10. Jon. Mortal Kombat. Escalating combo mechanic. Long list of disposable champions.
Even though MK did pretty bad in this poll, I still kind of wanna run it some day (though this is giving me pause). Jon's concept here did the best, and I do like it from the perspective of it being a novel mechanic we haven't run. But it does take us pretty far from the text of the movie . . . Maybe I'll take MK back to the drawing board and pitch it on the next Battle Royale.
9. Jon. Space Jam. Reality warping mechanic.
Space Jam has a ton of appeal, and I think Jon would do an amazing job on it. But Sports movies always have a ton of challenges to run in an RPG setting, so I'm kinda glad to not have to tackle this one.
8. Paulo. Moulin Rouge. Sing relevant pop songs for bonus points.
Honestly thought this one would do better. I do want to get around to doing a musical eventually, although I'd def spend more time brainstorming on what the ideal musical is. While I love Moulin Rouge, I don't think it's narrative structure makes a very natural reroll.
7. Paulo. Groundhog Day. Burn days to develop skills at will. Goal is to make Rita fall in love with him.
Honestly of all my concepts, this one is the one I'm least sold on. You gotta remember that Joz ambushed us with the pitch-off concept, and neither Jon nor I were prepped. I tried my best to sell this one on air, but I'm not sure it would be any fun.
6. Jon. The Matrix. Neo NPC. Escalating belief mechanic.
Both of our pitches for the Matrix finished top 6, so clearly this is a movie you guys want. It's not going on the schedule now, but I'm pretty excited about it so we'll probably get to it eventually.
5. Jon. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Roger reality warping powers, only when it's funny.
Another great concept that I think we may end up visiting eventually. Imagining Andy and Kara in the main rolls, I think that would be dynamite.
4. Paulo. The Matrix. Neo ascends on crit success will roll, but the players don't know that.
If we do get around to doing the matrix, I'll probably go with this approach. That does revolve on my players not knowing about this mechanic so please don't spoil it.
3. Jon. Murder on the Orient Express. Players make a murder plan. Detective is an NPC.
I'll admit I was a little skeptical on this concept, although I do believe that if anyone could pull off the balance of that game mechanic, it would be Jon. But it seems like you guys really liked this concept, so we may revisit this idea at some point, not necessarily with that exact movie.
2. Paulo. Truman Show. Truman actor doesn't know the movie. Director PC heard by everyone but Truman.
Honestly kind of shocked that this one finished so high. I was not entirely sold on the idea. The tricky point really would be finding someone who not only hasn't seen the Truman Show but also, so completely hasn't heard of it, that they don't immediately gather the premise just from the context clues and the name Truman.
1. Paulo. Die Hard. PVP. Jon plays John McClane w/ no plot armor. Test of Jon's GURPS skill.
And here's our winner. We'll be doing this reroll sometime coming up pretty soon. I'm really glad you guys voted for this one. I think it's gonna be a really fun concept and I'm excited to get it started.
Alright everyone, thanks to everyone who voted. We'll def do another one of these Battle Royale pitch-offs soon.
New episode dropping in the next couple days, it's a Time Bandits (because it took us forever to find a time that everyone in Cabin In the Woods was simultaneously available.) But worry not, Cabin in the Woods dropping in two weeks.

Man I for one would love a mortal kombat reroll. I hope they don’t give up on it entirely.

2025-03-27 23:35:44 +0000 UTCGonna be honest, I do not understand the overwhelming appeal of Die Hard, but I will always be on board with anything the film reroll does

2025-03-27 22:25:27 +0000 UTCYou mean the six episodes of TMNT?

2025-03-27 22:24:14 +0000 UTCWill there be PCs playing Alan Rickman's crew for die hard? I'm interested in the tight drama of a solo session, but having players as the opposition is equally appealing. Kara as Hans would be extremely amusing for a number of reasons.

2025-03-27 21:53:01 +0000 UTCThat's definitely not how I would have ranked them, especially Truman Show. I don't think there is anything there to really work with. And the Matrix with a secret mechanic to make the movie actually be the Matrix sounds primed for failure unless everyone is throwing will rolls like crazy. Die hard should be pretty short. See John Wick and TMNT.

2025-03-27 21:45:35 +0000 UTCYesss! Had to be that one, after all. Way too good of an idea. Please ask Kara to play Hans Gruber? 🥹
