The weekdays had passed without much going on, aside from the announcement that the Sports Festival would continue despite the villain attack. By the time the weekend arrived, Shiro found himself seated at the dining table at seven in the morning. Across from him, his father sat quietly, earbuds in, absorbed in the morning news, while his mother spoke to Shiro, her tone fluctuating between sternness and concern.
“Dear, like I said before, I’m glad you’re safe, but you mustn’t put yourself in danger like that again,” Kiyoka said, her brows furrowed with worry. “I understand you were protecting your friends, but try to consider how your parents feel.”
Shiro sighed, leaning back in his chair. “Mom, I’m going to be risking my life every day as a Hero. I thought you knew this. Isn’t that why you’ve been supporting me all this time?”
Kiyoka shook her head, her voice softening but her concern evident. “I know that being a hero is dangerous work and I will continue to support you, but you’re not a Hero yet. You’re a student. By the time you graduate, you’ll have my full confidence, but for now, stop being reckless. I signed the permission slip for you to train on weekends at UA, but you must be careful! Don’t let that new quirk of yours get to your head. No one is invincible, not even All Might.”
Hearing their conversation over the news, Shiro’s father removed his earbuds, a grin spreading across his face. “Let the boy be, Kiyoka. You wanted him to be a Hero, didn’t you? A man must protect his allies and face his enemies! Shiro is simply carrying out his duties!” He threw a playful punch into the air.
“I couldn’t have been more proud when I got a call from All Might of all people, telling me my son helped him defeat villains! I told my whole department! They didn’t believe it until I showed them the screen recording I made!” he added, his chest puffing with pride.
Kiyoka facepalmed, muttering, “That isn’t the point…”
Shiro smirked slightly and said, “My risks are calculated, Mom. Don’t worry about it. I’ll be safe, and when I’m a Hero, I’ll make others feel safe, including you and Dad.”
Kiyoka’s stern expression softened, and a small smile broke through. “I know you will, dear,” she said, standing up and kissing Shiro on the cheek. She collected his plate along with her own and walked to the sink before returning to the table.
“You want a lift to school?” she asked.
Shiro raised an eyebrow, his tone playful. “Really? I’m finally going to get a ride there?!”
Kiyoka rolled her eyes at his teasing. “I can’t take you on weekdays because I have work, you know that. But on weekends, it’s a different story. Come on, then—you don’t want to be late.” She patted his back as she moved toward the front door.
Shiro stood, grabbing his bag. “See you later, Dad,” he called out as he followed his mother.
“Go do your best, kid!” his father yelled, waving enthusiastically from the table.
After an hour-long drive, Shiro and Kiyoka arrived at UA, parking just outside the gates. The school grounds were eerily quiet, with not a single student in sight. However, police officers were stationed at various posts around the premises.
“My gosh, that’s a lot of security,” Kiyoka said, peering out the window.
“After what went down at the USJ, it’s only natural,” Shiro replied, though he couldn’t help but be surprised at the sheer number of officers. ‘UA really doesn’t hold back. The only places with this level of security are government facilities. Back when I was a hitman, infiltrating a place like this would’ve been a nightmare.’
A police officer approached the car, knocking on the driver’s window. Kiyoka rolled it down. “Hello, ma’am, what’s your name?” the officer asked, his eyes flicking to Shiro briefly.
“Kiyoka Kobayashi, mother of Shiro Kobayashi. My son is here for his training with Mount Lady,” she explained calmly.
The officer nodded but walked back to confer with a superior before returning. “Sorry for the wait; you’re cleared to enter.”
Kiyoka raised her hands in protest. “Oh, no, I’m not entering—only my son.” She gestured to Shiro in the passenger seat.
“That’s fine, ma’am,” the officer replied, glancing at Shiro, before returning to his post.
Shiro stepped out of the car, waving at his mother as she drove away.
As he approached the gate, the officer gave him directions. “Mount Lady is waiting for you at Gym Gamma.”
Shiro nodded in thanks and began making his way toward the gym.
As Shiro neared the building, he spotted a blonde-haired woman standing by the doors, waving enthusiastically.
“Come on! We don’t have all day!” Mount Lady shouted, her voice echoing through the quiet area.
Shiro, unfazed, didn’t speed up. ‘I was never one to run for the bus or through school gates. I’m not about to start running to training sessions. Gotta keep my aura up.’ He strolled toward her at a leisurely pace.
“Hey, Shiro, right? I’m Mount Lady!” she said, striking an exaggerated pose.
Clearing his throat, Shiro replied, “That’s correct. I’m Shiro.”
Grinning, Mount Lady slapped him on the back, causing him to stumble slightly. “Lighten up!” she exclaimed, almost sounding like she was ordering Shiro. ‘Does this kid not know who I am?’
‘This woman…’ Shiro thought, holding back a glare.
Turning toward the gym doors, Mount Lady entered a code, and they opened with a mechanical hum.
“Welcome, Shiro, to your first training session with the one and only Mount Lady!” she announced dramatically, her voice filled with pride.
‘So vain…’ Shiro thought, his expression deadpan as he followed her inside.
The gym was impressive. Painted roads and sidewalks sprawled across the floor, with small robots moving about, simulating pedestrians. Stationary cars dotted the roads.
‘This looks like an obstacle course,’ Shiro observed, his eyes scanning the setup.
“Welcome to my very own simulation room!” Mount Lady declared, her voice carrying through the space. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t use the mock city—our training session isn’t an expense that had been considered in the budget. But this gym is just as good!”
“So what are we doing exactly?” Shiro asked, tilting his head slightly.
Before he could speculate further, Mount Lady suddenly grew to her full height, charging effortlessly to the other side of the gym without disturbing a single obstacle.
‘Whoa.. That’s impressive, it looked so easy..’ Shiro pondered as he watched the woman stop at the end of the gym.
Turning back, she declared, “Today’s challenge is simple: you’ll be fighting me, but you can’t touch any of the obstacles! Your Titan form reaches around 15 meters, right? I’ll stay at that size too, to keep things fair. I’m quite generous, after all,” she said, placing a hand proudly on her chest.
Shiro smiled nervously. ‘It won’t be fair for her at all. But if I say that, she’ll think I’m looking down on her… That being said, it’s not like avoiding these obstacles will be an easy challenge..’
As he contemplated the trial to come, a blue notification popped up front of him.
[New Mission! Defeat Mount Lady without touching any obstacles! Reward: 30,000 XP.]
Shiro smirked. “Alright,” he muttered under his breath, his voice excited. “It’s about time I got another mission.”
