You don't need barrel distortion to get a wide field of view. Rectilinear wide angle lenses are often used in adult films because they make objects in the foreground appear larger than you would expect from the background information. The technical term is "Close focus wide angle" it's also used, as a matter of necessity, in a lot of underwater photography to minimize the effects of particulates in the water on the clarity of the image.
