If there was a single moment I could point to that kickstarted my desire to start making my own music - hell even start PAYING ATTENTION to music - it would be seeing the music video for "Omen" by The Prodigy as part of the promo campaign for the "Invaders Must Die" album in 2009. Putting two and two together to realise this was the same group that made "Smack My Bitch Up" and "Firestarter" all those years earlier made me really connect with the idea of getting properly into music for one of the first times outside of video game soundtracks.
16 years later (good gracious fuck) and I'm flipping the classic third single from the album "Warrior's Dance"!
I had the idea to make a simple 140 Dubstep flip that recreates / reinterprets the main crusty-ass bass from the original as more of a wobbler while being careful to avoid the ground already trodden by the Benga remix from back in the day. I'm usually terrible at recreating sounds but I'm really happy with how this one came out as so reminiscent of the original bassline while modernising it to work in a cleaner 2025 mixdown.
This one had all the same fun challenges from previous flips - mainly tracking down the original samples and the ways they were effected to create clean stems to work with. In some cases with modern tools I was able to get even cleaner samples than in the original. The "awww do it!" from "Mega-Mixx II" by 2 Live Crew for example came out so clean thanks to Ultimate Vocal Remover.
Anyways I hope you enjoy the flip! I could honestly flip basically anything else from that album with how much of a connection I have to it so lemme know what you'd like to hear.
