Sad Boyz Nightz #103 - "Tom MacDonald's Merch Is So Dumb"
Added 2025-03-07 19:40:53 +0000 UTC
⚠ CW/TW: We discuss our complicated relationships with food in the first 10 minutes of this episode.
Tom MacDonald recently released a new song (bad) and we also found his merch (worse).
Also, is cooking for one worth it?
Do most people only make like one meal at a time? Whenever I do a dinner it's for 2-3 nights at a time. Saves on cooking time, cleaning, cost, everything!

This is the second time I've heard Jarvis sing a Johnny Horton song (briefly the Battle of New Orleans). It's a nostalgia jumpscare reminding me of my dad's old records.

I'm like a month late BUT the main melody of the first tom macdonald song is eerily similar to the melody in the first verse of second chances by imagine dragons, like there are some subtle differences but it's really damn close lmao.

I've been making myself the same sandwich to eat multiple times a week for... months now
I 'meal prep' some bacon and chicken and then use a little indoor electric grill to kinda panini my sandwich. I put mixed greens and cucumbers and pesto and cheese. All the food groups. Not tired of it yet.

The thing with food is so real, I have struggled so so much with it at uni with chronic pain and audhd and a myriad of mental health stuff. All the steps cause me so much pain and take lots of energy and I don't have much desire to eat anyway. I now have a huel drink each day, and often one of my meals is a bunch of snacks because it's the only way I can manage to eat. There is such a morality attached to everything that I am still struggling with feeling like I'm not eating well enough, despite the fact that managing to eat at all atm is a success. It's always so nice to hear you guys talk about aspects of struggles I find it difficult to articulate, and this is a nice reminder that it is just okay to need to eat out or to not be able to cook things sometimes/often.

@12:00 another way to frame our intentions when communicating is Sharing, Support or Solutions.
Sharing: sometimes you just want to info-drop and not need anything from the other person, ie; “I have a bit of a headache today so I might seem a bit out of sorts but I’m all good”
Support: you want to be comforted, share excitement or feel validated in your emotions, ie; venting about an annoying coworker or celebrating a personal goal.
Solutions: you actively want help figuring out a problem, ie; I want your advice on how to deal with this person or issue.

to be totally honest, while hellofresh isn't the most morally upstanding company, and is a bit pricey, it's perfect for me making food for one person. i get a 2-person serving size, and use half for dinner and half for lunch the next day. i don't have a car so it's great to not have to go grocery shopping for 3 hrs every week. also i now eat fruit and vegetables! yay no scurvy!

Didn’t want to comment on YouTube - but you said you were trying a new thing by getting straight to the topic at the start in the podcast.
I found I prefer when you segue into the topics after a small check in rather than jump into the topic straightaway.
Maybe it’s just me but when episodes begin with you talking about where you are in your mental health pendulum wrt ADHD, anxiety, depression and how it affects your current daily functioning - it makes me feel very validated and puts me at ease - helping me relax and listen to the podcast as if I was a part of it as opposed to just listening to it passively :)

With the absolute (and deserved) vitriol Canada is throwing at Wayne Gretzky for being a piece of shit MAGA asshole, Tom MacDonald better hope he never has to come crawling back here or anyone who remembers he exists is going to throw garbage at him for the rest of his life for being such a bootlicking Trump freak.

Iceland has a database of everyone there because we've written down everyone who's arrived here and was born here since like the year 800

What are y'all doing that eating out costs as much as cooking at home? Here's a recipe for you:
-2 Golden Curry roux cubes
-2/3 cup of rice
-whatever veggies you want
-chicken (breast or thigh)
Incredibly easy to make, very cheap, no meal prep, and cheap.

I might have this mindset bc I've been a professional chef for 4 years in Utah (bringing this up bc I have the skills and Utah def isn't as expensive as Cali), but eating out (at restaurants that is) is so so so much more expensive than making a 4 serving dinner and then eating the leftovers throughout the week

2025-03-09 14:56:32 +0000 UTC
I feel like the middle ground between cooking and eating out is just frozen meals? Like they've gotten really good, they're all cheaper than takeout, and honestly probably around the same price as cooking a single meal for a single person. I'm not talking like one of those meal prep services, I just mean like go to the grocery store and hit up the frozen section. Sure, it's loaded with sodium and preservatives, but it can't be any worse nutritionally than constant takeout.

That Tom McDonald song might very well have been written by Suno or some other AI tool which would explain why the lyrics are "more diplomatic" than his usual stuff, and explain the very generic "post malone song" vibe it has

I think he was trying to emulate the feel of that Rich Men North of Richmond song with more production, in addition to the other influences. It's like class struggle cosplay. It also stands out as not being a "meme song" and will probably get mainstream radio play and thats going to suuuuuuuuck here in the south. I've got a feeling I'm going to hear it all summer.

Ugh, as a Dane, Trump's obsession with Greenland is on the news every day, and it's really making people show their colonist roots. They're conflating Trump's statements with actual issues and dismissing them. "Trump says he wants to buy Greenland? That's ridiculous" gets lumped in with people from Greenland expressing genuine desire for independence, but no this too is just ridiculous. Sometimes it gets masked with words like "the bond and shared history we have" or a patronising "aww that wouldn't be very good for them, but they just don't know it" and there are polls on whether or not Danes think Greenland should have independence. We shouldn't have a say in that! That's a decision for the people of Greenland! And then there's also the fact that one of the arguments Trump used was that Danes are racist towards the people of Greenland which again was met with a sentiment of: "oh that's rich coming from Trump of all people," and then people conveniently end it there instead of acknowledging that it's true. One recent example is that whenever Danes do the whole "people are so sensitive these days" one of the first things they will complain about is an ice cream that changed name a couple of years ago, so it doesn't include a slur for Inuit people anymore.

the groceries/dining out debate i think does depend on where you’re located and the availability of places around you.
i also will say as one person living alone, you will quickly find out how much shit you can store in the freezer because you just don’t eat it fast enough even if you are like me and don’t mind leftovers and don’t get tired of having the same thing.

This was so uncomfortable to watch - I mean because of this strange man culturally appropriating and also because he‘s a conservative dumb fuck😭 But I guess these things often go hand in hand… I’ve also watched the podcast about the Dunkin Donuts commercial and noticed the use of AAVE by white people (for example Ben Affleck), which even made me as a white person uncomfortable so I can‘t imagine how cringe it must have been for you guys 😅

Cooking at home is wildly unbalanced. It sucks early game and is underpowered until midgame when the skill tree really opens up. Most of the "useless" mats you collect for early fetch quests suddenly become useful too. Late game is actually incredible when you don't even need recipes to craft, you can just look at your inventory and usually you'll be able to throw something together. TLDR: order in for linear progression when you want to focus on other aspects of the game, invest in home cooking for insane mid/late game perks if it interests you.
