Everyone has thoughts on the viral "Vintage Heart Cake". What do you think?
Finally joined for these premium Nightz convos, but the cake thing is not exclusive to the vintage heart cakes and I think the tiktoks could have done a better job of talking about it, though I doubt they realize, they're just in their own lil spheres. Anybody that makes and sells hand-made crafts/art that are also available commercially can tell you about comments from ignorant dweebs that are like "uhmmm why are you charging so much for this thing I could literally buy for 10 dollars...." and it feels like that is the crux of the bakers' point, being annoyed at the people scoffing at the prices they charge for a custom food that's also a piece of art. I don't think any of them are looking beyond "my vintage heart cakes..." but I've seen so many artists get these kind of comments, it's disheartening (pun a little intended) but ultimately, as y'all said, it's capitalism. And it sucks!
Also side note but Jordan's point about chocolate cake having the widest spectrum of quality is SO true, I also feel that way about icing- some kinds of icings I enjoy but others I will scrape off because they are so nasty.

I think the fast fashion of it all has just completely demolished people’s ability to value the time and effort and SKILL of human beings. Like I sell tarot readings for example. When you’re buying a reading from me, you’re not just paying for my time but the fact that I have spent a decade dedicated to perfecting a craft. Collectively we just undervalue craftsmanship (and each other)

As a crafty person, I do empathize with the frustration of people outside of your craft not understanding the effort and cost of participating. I get lots of people in my life, from every age group saying "oh if I buy the yarn will you knit me a sweater like yours, it's only like $50 for a sweater's worth of yarn right?" and be shocked to find out that the yarn cost me $200 and the sweater took 3 months to make. I'm happy to spend that money for good quality yarn and the time on myself, because it creates the product I want and I enjoy the process, but other people often can't believe the time spent or understand why it would be so different from an item they could buy at target. I also have hEDS and I think arthritis, so I trade time spent on my beloved hobby for a lot of pain in my hands. Because of how much time my projects take (I tend to make very complex items) I always say that I don't make garments for other people, because to be fair to myself I would have to charge for the labor involved, and I don't like the idea of charging friends or family $400+ for anything I do for them. The thing is having the conversation about handmade goods and small businesses is not going to go well on the internet, because nothing ever does.

I used to be a cake decorator at a Safeway for a few years! I know that the cakes we would get weren't made with the highest quality but hearing small bakeries talk like "well at least MY cake isn't a walmart cake" is insulting to a lot of people who have worked hard to produce that walmart cake that is oh-so-terrible.
I was told I couldn't turn away customers, and everyday would frost and decorate anywhere between 15-30 cakes while getting talked down to by customers who wanted extremely extravagant cakes for cheap. it was an insult to my work when I would spend hours working on a wedding cake and they would scoff at the price because "its just a safeway cake."
Sure, I wasn't baking the cakes in store like specialty bakeries do, but that doesn't take away the fact I had to have specialized classes and a lot of practice and cramped hands before I was able to cake decorate well. A lot of work goes into doing a specialized job regardless if its in a small bakery or a grocery store.
Its just disappointing to see all these home bakers talk down on grocery store decorators when they struggle with the same thing. We could all be bonding about how annoying it is to not get the correct color with food dye and trying to get a well done crumb coat instead of this.

The TikToks played complaining about the Walmart cake made claims about the ingredients, but used "maybe" or "probably" when saying so. I feel like when you shoot a shot like this via TikTok, you should at least back up said claim with proof of what's in there (worst case you take a trip to the closest Walmart and look at the cake's label). Sure, I too would think Walmart wouldn't be using the best ingredients, but at the same time I'm not going to make a blanket statement on TikTok like it's a fact, and a reason to get an artisan cake vs a Walmart cake. Prove to me these more expensive cakes actually have better ingredients, you know?

I do think that seeing how capitalistic "competition" (monopoly) directly affects your specific niche/art/product/whatever can be a catalyst for some people to actually understand its harms at a deeper level than just conceptual.
While I think the heart-cake-focusedness of those tiktoks is kinda shallow, I also think that "case studies" and personal anecdotes like these are important as building blocks for anyone to look at their situations and assess even the minor ways they are being undervalued, even if they don't all shoot straight for the heart of every issue with the system.
Edit: one more though on this - I do think this specific situation feels more like a niche breaching containment and its fans being a little bitter. Kinda like whenever an anime goes walmart merch popular and all of the "og" fans being pretentious about liking it before then. The nirvana shirt was a great comparision imo.

one thing I don’t think was touched on (forgive me if it was and I missed it) is that up until now these cakes were a status symbol, and I think that’s part of why some bakers are upset.

On the topic of going for a swim and never coming back, you should really read about the Australian PM Harold Holt who did just that. They also named a pool after him for some reason.

also yes the vintage heart cakes are a trend, they’re usually made with extra decoration and stuff so it theoretically takes a lot of extra time to make

they do have bakeries at walmart tho, it’s not like they’re making the recipes, it’s predetermined recipes and cake mix and designs, but they are baked there sometimes. same with a lot of grocery stores.

Regarding the Walmart baker thing -- a few Walmarts I've been to do have a sign that says that some cakes are made right there. And behind the cake area, you can see there's a kitchen of sorts where people are working. Though of course, I don't know if this is universal across all Walmarts (I am in a major city in Canada), or if the sign is truthful.

im already spiraling again its so simple like theres a billion reasons why the prices are different and WHY are we trying to get independent businesses to charge less wtf being paid adequately for our labour is what we WANT??? we must surrender fair wage in exchange for a workplace/ingredients/stable income!!!! one of those walmart cakes costs more than they paid the person who made 10 of them in the past hour!!?!!!
