I live in Japan now, and every time I use my American card to buy something it takes 3 or 4 days for the purchase to go through, with the final price depending on the exchange rate when it goes through, not when I actually buy the thing. There are a lot of people in similar situations who really have no idea how much money our groceries cost when we go to the store. It's very hard to budget for this.
