Britainology 102: Adolescence, Episode 1

Nate and Milo watch the first installment of Netflix's 4-part series ADOLESCENCE and discuss how it captures modern Britain, how things have changed since we were kids in the before times, why Stephen Graham chose to make this, and also a story about nonconsensual lawn mowing.

In terms of criticisms that aren’t about the race of the lead, I think the substantive criticisms are mostly about the other three episodes - being sentimental as you said; not having a lot of sympathy for the female victim, and getting very ‘kids and their phones’. A criticism I haven’t seen brought up as much, but I think does bear on your discussion of the first episode, is that while there absolutely have been murders motivated by uncle beliefs in the UK, all the high profile ones have been committed by young adults, so it feels like it’s taking the real issue of incel culture and the real issue of teenage knife crime and conflating them in ways that (by the end of the series) feels like it comes to some quite reactionary conclusions.

The public defender system in the US varies state by state and county by county. In many counties they do actually pull the Public Defender from whichever lawyer happens to be available in the area at the time. I remember clerking for the local DA in my small town the summer after my freshman year in college and we just had a few lawyers hanging around and the judge would just point at one and select him to be the defender.
