The Honourables feat. Gareth Dennis
Added 2025-03-01 16:15:04 +0000 UTCNOTE: There's a slight issue with some echoes in this recording. We're trying to get it all fixed and will update if we can, but we don't want to delay the episode! Thank you for your patience, as ever..
Gareth Dennis returns to discuss infrastructure, growth, and the new airport runways that are about to festoon this island with promises of imaginary growth. But first, we present to you one of the Guys Of All Time.
And check out Rail Natter here!

2025-03-07 09:59:29 +0000 UTCThat website has broken my brain. An excerpt from the blog: "Health support and supply critical to make the world go round. With further tremendous insult to our NHS by the government’s offer to increase wages 1% timber has increased cost up to 180% worldwide. Something is clearly wrong. The USA in a position to pay far more for timber leaving the UK to pick up the scraps." What does this mean??

2025-03-03 15:48:48 +0000 UTCI think what is also overlooked is how much the BSW eating shit had to do with them trying to do Querfront to quickly. Up until the Migration bill at end of January Die Linke was expected to eat shit and the BSW was expected to squeeze in. Then they cosied up to the AfD and it crystallized a lot of people. I had entertain maybe voting BSW before I had grudgingly, fatalistically, settled on the Die Linke and BSW playing footsie with the AfD just bolstered that but for a lot of people that seems to have been the point where they came over. It also does not help that the BSW does not accept new members, like, at all.

2025-03-03 00:06:39 +0000 UTCOmg! I've been saying the put the bad people in the computer simulation for years now! That's all they seem to want anyway. My solution to Trump II was to let him go on a few rallies, then tell him he's won and send him to a Oval Office replica in Mar-a-Lago. Sure it would cost a few million for that and to install some shiny buttons that do nothing, and to create a replacement fox news, but we have AI now to make fox news for him in real time. Still better than the democrats no plan-plan I'd wager.

2025-03-02 12:05:11 +0000 UTCIncidentally, Israel-Palestine is, indeed, roughly the size of New Jersey. (New Jersey is the US state closest in size to Israel-Palestine.) Gaza is more comparable to Staten Island (or even Brooklyn) than it is to Atlantic City, though. Atlantic City is tiny!

2025-03-02 10:43:08 +0000 UTCMore specifically than The Matrix, the idea of sequestering the weird freaks into a metaverse where they can have all their libidinal pleasures fulfilled without bothering the rest of humanity is basically the world of Margaret Killjoy's excellent short story Beyond Sapphire Glass, and I'm saying that in full support of the idea. Well really I'm saying that because I immediately associated to that story from Nova's description and wanted to share it with anyone who hasn't yet read it: http://strangehorizons.com/fiction/beyond-sapphire-glass/

2025-03-02 07:17:08 +0000 UTCI actually have a little spark of hope here in Germany, we as Die Linke are finally United after BSW left, we almost doubled in numbers since than, and unlike other parties we are now to large parts made up of highly motivated young people instead of the pensioners in the great Volksparteien. Now after the election we have to rewrite our program, but I am pretty sure that we will be able to keep a democratic socialist course, without falling to social democracy. Even though at the same time as this is happening the AFD is growing terryfyingly powerful

2025-03-02 07:13:08 +0000 UTCObviously the way to get paid silly money as a software engineer is to learn something ancient and cursed, like FORTRAN or COBOL. Or you could try and resurrect some quixotic language that never caught on, like Lisp.
Elsie Hupp
2025-03-02 05:30:49 +0000 UTCHaving an actual computer science degree means you’ll be able to get a job doing the remaining well-compensated software engineering, though. To be fair, I do think most people should learn some basic Python scripting, just so they understand how computers work, but merely knowing a little JavaScript or Python was never going to be a job market panacea in the first place.

2025-03-02 05:23:01 +0000 UTCIn all fairness to the Trump Gaza Atlantic City plan, Trump New Jersey Atlantic City was utterly unworkable, too, so perhaps the unique thing with Gaza is that it’s one of the few remaining places on earth where a Trump hotel hasn’t gone bankrupt yet. Or maybe Fred Trump will come back from the dead and save Gaza. Which would probably have a higher likelihood of success.
