Britainology 101: This Is England (2006)

For this month's second Britainology, we watched the 2006 Shane Meadows film THIS IS ENGLAND, which neither of us had ever seen. But in Nate's case, his mom had watched it thinking it would be a heartfelt and uplifting coming-of-age film and, uh. That being said, we liked it and would also appreciate your thoughts on it since it actually seems to be one of the better works of media we've examined on this show.
Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want actually came out in 1984 (it was on Hatful of Hollow which puts it around when the film was set.

One of Shane Meadows' signature things is using non-actors and improvisation, hence the natural, genuine feeling performances. Pretty sure a majority in this film were not trained actors. And related fact: this didn't end up happening but a friend was going to produce a cereal advert with Meadows as a forector and his idea was to film (his?) kids eating the cereal from a camera attached to his head, POV style.

To be fair to it, in terms of flirting with positive depictions of Englishness, the skinheads were a genuinely originally non/anti-racist cultural movement, so I think itβs good to show that the boneheads didnβt just spring into existence out of nowhere, it was another example of how the culture at the time deformed what was originally a Black cultural movement.

the Ich Bin Ein Auslander shirt has got to be a ref to the Pop Will Eat Itself song of the same name, which you really should go listen to, it's incredible

i would say on the "accents are all over the place" point: my experience of being from the midlands is that you do get lots of people moving around the northern half of the country. The idea of hanging out in Skegness with a crew comprised of a scouser, a boltonian, and a an array of unplaceable accents, is very believable

I tend to say I'm from the UK rather than English. But that's because I was born in England, but I have Scottish family, but I don't feel Scottish. I accidentally made up a word in spanish when I was in Madrid and we were introducing ourselves. I said "soy reinounidense", thinking it was like estadounidense, but apparently it's not something people say

I regret to inform you that when Nate said "the p-slur" I misheard it as 'the peaceler' and was briefly convinced of the existence of a commited pacifist version of the Rizzler

I first got shown this film in sixth form Media Studies by our New Zealand teacher Mr Morrison, as part of a unit on British film. Very nice and enthusiastic guy with a passion for showing us cool films and TV, and encouraging us to think about them analytically. Eager to hear what you guys made of it
