They certainly act like it. One of my thoughts is they can't let anyone think of the word 'helicopter' because the next logical question is asking 'helicopters have been around for +70 years: why aren't they as ubiquitous as cars?' (answer: coming into contact with reality).

2025-01-13 08:10:17 +0000 UTCOn the bonds stuff, a quick clarification: One of the assumptions people make is that bonds change their yield because of the risk that a country won't pay their bonds AKA default risk. This literally cannot happen in a country with its own central bank issuing bonds in its own currency. Without default risk, the only thing bond traders need to care about is the yield relative to the central bank rate which strictly speaking means that the bond yield is whatever the government, acting through its agent the central bank, wants it to be. That said, in practice the government likes to pretend it's constrained (because we are at the mercy of a clueless and feckless ruling class who don't like to be held responsible the state of the world) so instead the central bank sets rates as a kind of signal for where they want inflation to be (with dubious evidence as to how effective that is): If they want inflation to go down, they raise the rates; if they want inflation to rise, they lower it. That means that all of the shifts in bond rates can be tracked towards not even inflation expectations, but the ossified inflation expectations of the Bank of England. That on its own explains both the Truss "crash", where the orthodoxy would just expect her measures to cause inflation and therefore need to be adapted to, and the current situation where nobody expects UK bonds to be brought back down any time soon.
