Years of Lead Poisoning

For our first TF episode of 2025 (recorded in 2025, that is), we're talking about recent events in the United States, plus Elon Musk's decision to weigh in on British politics and its downstream effects: ruining Keir Starmer's toboggan ride, among other things. We very much hope you enjoy.

You missed a very easy Ethan Frome punchline

Miles

Also regret to inform that Adrian Dittmann is real, Maia Crimew posted an article about it

Do I have to pick which ball I kick my boss in?

Marjorie Zeager

I also have no idea what scrobbling is, but the Gen Zs in my discord servers are obsessed with it.

Seeking funding for my new start up SQUABLR which will turn squibbled novels into very disconcerting audiobooks.

I picked up my British passport today and am now a dual citizen. It really feels like a choice between original and extra crispy crazy.

This is a Jack Vance book, right?

Am very intrigued by Henry Kissinger as Robin.

"I thought all writers drank to excess and beat their wives... You know, at one time I think I secretly wanted to be a writer."

WankerPants

Keeping a nonce gang around so you can press the racist outrage button is the political racism evolution no one asked for. I cant wait to write a philosophical book on scribble about it.

Elek Tolman

The marathon example for an AI slop book really hit a nerve with me. Like, the robot trying to take away all effort and will and enjoyment of activity away from me also wants to sell me a book about the paradigmatic activity one does just to get good at a thing for the sake of the process and self improvement.

Miriam Hitchcock

Misheard that as "UCAS personal statements," like Unmanned Combat Aerial Systems. Very different motivational book

-Kris-

considering America's literacy rates just came out and they are CRATERING, with Half of the population having a literacy rate below a 6th grade reading level, the "calling Americans idiots" thing is just gonna keep getting worse

yeah, i'm trying to get back into copywriting after graduating but have found that in the last couple of years, all of the garbage 3-cents-per-word freelance gigs that I used to take have been replaced by garbage "AI" training gigs. depressing

there is a kind of logic to it, but it only works if you don't consider that there is already an endless flood of low-grade eBook slop deluging the marketplace. yearly book sales, both digital and physical, are growing in the US year by year. getting into physical books is a no-go if you care about profits because hard copy sales are more and more concentrated in the hands of Big 5 publishers and it's increasingly difficult for indies to simply break even on production and distribution costs, but eBooks cost relatively little to produce, and if you cut out author advances, editorial and publicity salaries, proofreader payments, and all other costs associated with producing a book other than a subscription to Scribbly Bibbly and maybe a social media budget, you're getting a lot closer to the promise of money for nothing. most eBooks make very little--if any--money, but if you pump them out en masse, you can theoretically rake in a profit by going wide. of course, if the number of eBooks for sale increases exponentially compared to the number of eBook readers and the amount of time they have to read, the possibility of turning a profit exponentially decreases (and it was already a pretty ephemeral possibility even pre-"AI" due to the sheer number of people trying to peddle their half-baked bullshit on the eBook market).

ACTUALLY, you can't stream songs on LastFM a la Spotify. i can't tell you exactly what a "scrobble" is because I never opened LastFM again after I discovered that it isn't a streaming service (for I am little more than a squealing pig and my appetite is only for Content) but it isn't equivalent to a "play" on Spotify. sick of these leftist podcasters just pulling shit out of their ass instead of basing their claims on FACT.

Random thought for TF: not numbering the episodes makes it difficult to go through the back catalogue. I have to scroll through dates from the latest or first episodes every time I want to find an episode I haven't heard

Explaining domestic terrorism to an American: "Okay, imagine a Livelsberger..."

Carley They/Themsen

I'm thinking like ca. 2005 when Johnathan Franzone got name-dropped multiple times on The Simpsons. I smell what you're stepping in there.

The Project Project

picking marathon running as an example is so funny, talking about their marathon training is most coworker yapping at me thing you can imagine

etienne

I don't understand where the money is in book startups when the average person has a distraction even every 3 phrases. they want to make *more* full length books?

etienne

As a writer-American I find your commentary about us at the end deeply offensive.

Jordan Clementi

I didn't know Richard Nixon was Batman

shadowcb

I regret to inform you that writer identity politics is A Thing. It seems to rise in cycles and I haven’t seen a ton of it personally lately. But it definitely exists.

Heather

The AI stuff is so depressing. Even before AI it was an incredibly difficult thing to make a living doing creative writing and now apps like this are actively making it impossible. I know friends who left their copywriting jobs because they were being forced to edit AI outputs. I know plenty of people who write and whose work is getting drowned out by the AI spam. As funny as this all seems, to people who write as a job, a hobby or a passion, this is devastating. Some writers are even hesitating promoting their work because AI grifters are scraping socials. A lot of us are feeling hopeless. If AI continues this will end a lot of careers and dreams.

I'm imagining the guy ordered his ISIS flag from the same very nice Turkish Canadian man I got my Anarcho-Comunist Trans Pride Flag from. He was very accommodating, and even gave me a second flag for free.

Pigeon Queen ?

The thing Elon doesn't understand in this was is timing. You don't claw back your campaign promises until after Trump is actually president. That's when Trump starts "owning the Libs" at CNN which libidinally excites his feral base of racist voters, but only as a phantasm. The "Libs" acting like Trump is a larger than life threat makes his base feel like he is doing something when he is mostly just talking shit. When the Media and Trump start jangling keys nobody would even bring up H-1B.

The thing about Empire is that eventually it learns that one of the greatest threats to it's self replication is Demobbed soldiers who enacted it's wars. They tend to be used to being organized, comfortable with violence, and used to direct action. The US learned this with the Bonus Army. In order to avoid Bonus Army 2: all Lt. Spears this time, the government felt it had to do a thing that the US government hates to do, giving things to working class people with the Montgomery GI Bill. Only if you're white of course. With sufficient prosperity most normal GIs lacked sufficient anxiety rise up like an American Organisation armée secrète.

Apparently Peppa Pig is a Hasbro holding??? So maybe Esoteric Hasbro could do official versions of those YouTube Elsagate Peppa Pig snuff films where Peppa gets murdered or whatever!

marilyn

I do like the idea of Esoteric Hasbro. Cluedo where the murder weapon is a hired Tesla is merely the beginning, surely, of a HIGHLY profitable new direction for the conglomerate as a whole.

Couple bombing notes: - bollards: some were removed from Bourbon St and replaced with human cops for NYE; removal was related to a years-long upgrade (with issues). more: https://www.newsnationnow.com/crime/bollards-new-orleans-attack/ - Elon: when I watched Vegas news video it seemed EM stole his cyber brags beat-for-beat from what the LVPD said about the vehicle containing and forcing the explosion upwards etc?
