All That Geelongs Round the Gyre

This week, it's Riley, Milo, and November discussing the eternal phenomenon of the infinity tax-break Jeremy Clarkson-type farmer, the "farmer protests," and the fact that no one seems willing to understand that, as far as British politics is concerned, half-measure liberal concessions to right-wing populism just wind up making the full-bore version happen instead. Weird how this,, keeps happening,
They see the number; aren’t doing the math…

Love the terrible Israeli ai startup that's leeching on the terrible ghostwritten algorithmically selected topic audiobook spam trend which is itself a leech that hasn't actually drawn any blood for almost a decade except for the mlm training scams also leeching off it.

As someone who is unfortunately a tax professional, the UK is either wildly punitive (tax on loans to directors for example) or wildly permissive (farms are/were estate tax free). The history of being ruled by landlords and tepid social democrats writ large.

Oh, trashfuture getting dangerously close to my special interest of farming and food. I'm not precisely sure on Britain vs the US but farmland is generally overvalued relative to the money you can make farming on it as it valued under the assumption that one day it will be developed into single family housing and you should just hold it forever until that happens. Over here we do have yearly property tax in most states here but it's not, generally speaking, significant enough to dent the rise in valuation and if it was it would immediately bankrupt everyone actually growing food. The farmers using slave labor and the farmers worried about exactly how many millions will be exempt are probably two distinct groups. The former are probably the "specialty" crop fruit/veg in which the primary cost is labour, and the latter are more likely commodity farmers of grains and soy that are too highly mechanized to employee anyone other than the farmer and that poorly as you point out. Modern mechanized farming is incredibly capital intensive so it is quite likely that instead of just soaking the rich an asset tax will just fold some of the large by human scale but small by agribusiness scale farms into BlackRock. No one will be sad though because the whole system is broken and the only actual farmers left are like 3 guys in their 80s.

New Labours of Hercules could be a great shirt. Buff dude, long hair, holding the jawbone of a goat, but wearing a badly fitting suit and Clark Kent glasses. He's waiting in line in an office that says "ID cards" or "Tax Incentives" or "Emergency Room." I'll accept my royalties in Bitcoin or bonds for Neom megastructure construction projects.

Deere John -
Your tractor is no more,
Stolen by the tax-man
To feed his gaping maw.
Now you must leave your
Unsown fields, your
Unshorn sheep, your
Unsoiled Range Rover.
Lay down your Barbour jacket ,
My dear farmer,
Gather your faithful friends,
And make more Top Gear.

or rather, thank god the only way goverments choose to control asset inflation also directly cause price inflation instead
etienne
2024-12-02 03:20:16 +0000 UTC
that rules. fortunately every goverment on earth will always insanely crack down on wage inflation while protecting asset inflation right up to when it clashes with the lack of wage inflation

Actually i misremembered this a bit but the gist is the same. Price -deflation- doesn’t have bad effects. Asset deflation does. So it’s bad for governments to stoke asset inflation for the purposes of getting some consumer price inflation. Asset bubbles (that always pop) and consumer inflation are both bad and there’s not really a trade off going on here.
Oliver Elliott
2024-12-01 18:10:38 +0000 UTC
Re asset bubbles: There’s a white paper from economists at the famously leftist Bank of International Settlements pointing out that, actually, price/wage inflation has never been shown to have knock-on effects to the economy. Out of hand asset price inflation, on the other hand, is almost always devastating when it unwinds. The economists reasonably concluded that maybe governments shouldn’t stoke asset bubbles.

Geelong local government update after recent elections: the state Labor government’s cunning plan of forcing all Victorian councils to move from multi-member to single member wards has suceded in reducing socialist and Greens councillors including in Geelong. No Darryn Lyons’ but boring normal Liberals (conservatives) now in command there.

I was watching a tik tok live of one of the attendees of the farmers protest and he couldn't stop banging on about "woke labour" and when they got moved to the green outside parliament just in front of St James's cathedral he kept on going "bet you don't do it too the Palestinians!" And simply kept coming back to that well like all the time it was so fascinating a look into the mind.
