We performed live at Between the Bridges in London on Sunday, 24th November 2024. Storm Bert was raging. November’s train got canceled due to it being wet. The wind itself took issue with our venue. But we convened before a crowd, joined by ultimate friend of the show Devon from the Kill James Bond podcast, to discuss Boris Johnson’s new tell-all memoir. It is… a lot.

A good Olympic park can be a genuinely lovely public space. The Beijing Olympic park is great. It's accessible from three different metro stations, has a couple of different outdoor venues and a 10km running course with a real-time leaderboard. It's a nice open green space, not a hideous sculpture in an industrial estate.

2024-11-27 16:05:00 +0000 UTCBoris's constant use of "leveling up"reminds me of an anedcote about Will.I.Am, where - at some birdbrained tech shit-show he was hosting - he constantly used the verb "batoning", in the sporting sense of handing over a baton to another, but the baton was everything from "an idea" to creativity, or energy or whatever. There's this weird neoliberal instinct to focus on the novelty of a word as a stand-in for the whole. We can't just develop infrastructure, build housing, develop programs for young and longterm-unemployed, etc, because those are things that have already been done. What we "can do" is leveling up, or batoning something. And because we actually can't or won't "do anything", using a redundant neologism is functionally the same as doing it. It's basically a way of politics that Trump has taken to the most extreme degree, where saying you've done something - make america great again - is the same as actually doing "it". The FBI used to be a total mess, but now it's amazing. What has changed, in particular? Nothing, and yet it is so. It's the same with this idiotic level up shit, which - apart from being really juvenile sounding - probably isn't a thing in the material sense, and just a matter of attitude and linguistics (kinda afirmed by Boris constant portrayal of himself as primarily a moral booster, and not, like, a person who "does things."). ...I mean, I say "weird", but it's actually not if you understand it as basically everyone on the political spectrum (save for "real leftists") having internalized as an unshakable truth that "you can't do things, in the practical and material sense, in politics. You can only cheerlead, spin and raise awareness".
