Left on Read: The Mauritius Command

November and Riley are definitely not going to do another Aubrey-Maturin book after this one for a little while... but it was just too much of a delight to pass up one more. We discuss Commodore Aubrey's exploits in the Indian Ocean, writing idyll at sea, and O'Brian's view of what it means to "be yourself and have fun with it."

As Horatio Hornblower's wife said, in one of the greatest exchanges between husband and wife in literature, to be a commodore is to be an 'admiral in petto'. I am not going to explain what makes this little passage so damned delicious, because you should read the Hornblower novels if you have not, and I would not spoil them for you, and those of you who have read them will know just what I mean. O'Brien was in some ways shouting out that scene several times in the Mauritius Command, and it was charming.

Oh, November honey, you always spoke like Stephen Maturin, it's one of the reasons I cough up on Patreon for two of your podcasts. Never apologize for it, it's wonderful.

What a delicious episode about a very interesting sounding book. Left on read is easily my favourite part of trashfuture.

Gonna save this one like an emergency Laudnum supply for when times are hard.

re: reading these books turning you two into aubrey and maturin. i recently spent a year abroad and my only exposure to english was TF and patrick obrien novels. altered my speech to an incomprehensible degree. the first time i met another anglophone during this time, i sounded so deranged they thought i'd invented a new baroque type of flirting

Azerty

The Mauritius Command? I should like it of all things!

Disappointed they didn't bring on Mattie Lubchansky and start No Gods No Masters No Commanders as a spin off series where they cover the whole series.

Jon W

Finished the book last night, it's like they knew.
