Left on Read: William Morris
Added 2023-11-22 09:59:01 +0000 UTCRiley and Alice read an edited volume (by two time TF guest Owen Hatherley) about Victorian socialist thinker and designer, William Morris. A man with the gift of prophecy who was tragicomically obsessed with making England medieval again.

To Morris’ point about Art with an A in previous periods, there certainly were societies with no Fine Art ie handmade aesthetic objects meant just to “enlighten the mind” or whatnot. He may have been accidentally rightish on that one

Anyhoo thanks for this LOR ep; I’m in the “was gifted a book of Morris patterned wrapping paper as an art tween and never knew he was a socialist” club

2023-12-05 03:31:30 +0000 UTCI used to agree more with Alice about morris’ designs, but I started to appreciate it a lot more when I started making wood things by hand and had to start thinking about ornamentation and what values/principles should inform, for a communist, design. The arts and crafts movement has been very helpful to me in developing my own style (also, Utility Furniture (CC41) and campaign furniture (problematic))
