The Dawning of the Sealord feat. Shanti Singh
Added 2022-09-14 23:01:03 +0000 UTCThis week, Riley, Milo, Hussein, and Alice join special guest Shanti Singh for her second-ever appearance on TF, to discuss recent recall campaigns and dark money activism funded through San Francisco's intensely authoritarian libertarian VC guys. However, before we can talk about that, we have to talk about a startup that wants to build sea pods, presumably so that you can pay rent to a sealord.

Update on the sea pods https://www.reddit.com/r/ThatLookedExpensive/comments/xwxlk8/15_million_floating_home_prototype_sinks_into_the/ The prototype sunk.

2022-10-06 12:22:23 +0000 UTCThe startup reminds me of the Thunder Horse PDQ, which almost sank in the Gulf of Mexico during hurricane Dennis. The automatic ballast system failed and when they returned to the platform it was listing at a severe angle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunder_Horse_PDQ . So I'm not that confident that a startup is going to make it work.

2022-09-17 14:15:52 +0000 UTCI love the reference to raft. Don't know if it's still the case in the game, but I would like to imagine buying this 1.5 mil house, visiting a random island, forgetting to tie or anchor, then your 1.5 mil house floats away so far that the island you are on despawns.

2022-09-17 05:34:41 +0000 UTCI am astonished that this sea home concept has come up with the thing that they did rather than using the same principle as the FLiP research platform. That works too good?

2022-09-16 06:02:45 +0000 UTCI'll start taking these nerds seriously when they manage to recruit a First-Sword till then I question their viability.

2022-09-16 05:51:57 +0000 UTCearly UNIX guys knew that they were oppressed by evil corporations so they built a libertarian decentralized net to free themselves and then barely 20 years later 4 *different* corporations took that over and resumed oppressing them. it's really fascinating. failing at ideology speedrun

2022-09-16 02:04:16 +0000 UTCvague memories of one of those google barges showing up in Portland, Maine overnight, which is the only thing that has ever happened in Maine, and the news coverage being just “the fuck is this ugly piece of shit in the harbor?” Good marketing from google there.

2022-09-15 23:29:28 +0000 UTCokay but wait a sec here. It just came out that the head of the organization in charge for building *public housing* in SF was blocking projects on like vacant lots by ordering completely bs studies on racial discrimination impacts and never getting them done and leaving the project die. there *is* an entranched anti-building power in SF, it's just not the DSA, and people who fight against it aren't just billionaires, it's litteral public housing advocates

2022-09-15 21:54:24 +0000 UTCokay to be fair to the seastading weirdoes, I know from first hand experience that a lot of boomers like to buy a plot of so-far un-developable land, go there by car, stopping at the grocery and the gas station on the way, buy firewood at the store along with a couple newspaper, camp there for one weekend, and think, ah! I am meaningfully isolated from society! and then get into protracted fights with the county administration over snow removal contracts in order to secure the permit for a country house

2022-09-15 21:18:19 +0000 UTCThis startup sounds like the so-called CEO of this company played Subnautica one time and was like, "What if we made this IRL?".

2022-09-15 05:46:37 +0000 UTCHmm.... wonder when the turn from Neoliberal-but-Progressive to "There is a Woke Cabal keeping us down" amongst the techies was relative to the broader realization that algorithmic oppression is a thing. That's a serious question btw. It was a year between the publication of Cathy O'Neil's Weapons of Math Destruction (2016) and the James Dalmore memo (2017). How good those are as bench-marks ¯\_ツ_/¯, but those were both early, strong impulses for me to turn to Luddism. The tech bro version of my life might have had me turning into an Anti-Woke psycho instead.

2022-09-15 04:34:50 +0000 UTCIt's really hard to articulate how irrelevant yet domineering San Francisco is in California, like if Canterbury was actually where all the politics was in the UK instead of London.

2022-09-15 04:06:10 +0000 UTCit is so disorienting right now listening to anything recorded in britain before the 8th because it's all like...quaint place-setting now. This episode is like Remember Me, the camera pans out at the very end to reveal they've been recording inside the Queen the whole time
