New Cumbernauld Man feat. Dan Boeckner

We brought on Dan Boeckner, musician from the bands Wolf Parade and Operators, podcaster with Riley from the show Bottlemen, to discuss a 1977 spy thriller called 'Cumbernauld HIT' set in Cumbernauld, Scotland. Except it was funded by the local council to promote Cumbernauld, using the film as a promo for the New Town and all its drab concrete labyrinth glory. Here is the spirit of Labourism, a new model community where society is building a new man who, crucially, does not jack off.

New Cumbernauld Man feat. Dan Boeckner

Comments

As someone who grew up in a similar albiet English new town a lot of this sounds very familiar. I kind of miss our horrible badly maintained and designed brutalist town centre. Which has now been replaced by a generic red brick and glass monstrosity.

After listening to this I was shocked that I hadn’t heard of it before. I’ve lived in Cumbernauld my whole life so when I saw this I realised how far the town has fallen. What was even more shocking was that the toy plane was piloted by MY FATHER when he was a 12 year old boy.
