Tree Stump Tombstones

While taking your next stroll through your local cemetery or graveyard (which I assume you all do), keep an eye out for one of these stone tree markers.

Popularized between 1880 and 1920, these carved stumps were a way of associating death with life. Death was considered everlasting art, forever entwined with the natural world. They could also be considered the precursor to the modern tree pod burials.

Because the time period these were made is quite small, they are pretty rare in Canada and New England! However there are lots of them scattered around the American south due to a life insurance company including them with their policy between 1890 and 1900.

Have you ever seen any of these before?
