It was mostly out of desperation. I've read from the same sources that in the very end of the war the Japanese military actually considered giving some kind of recognition to the Chinese Communists to put pressure on the Nationalist government of China, but the emperor of Japan did not allow that. I am not fully sure it is true, though.

2022-02-24 14:31:29 +0000 UTCI am familiar with this argument, but I did not mention it because the facts that I read in the sources seemed not fully agree with it. There were some good Nationalist units deployed against the Communists, but given the total size of the Chinese army it did not seem to be a major factor in the campaign. Also the Nationalists held some of their Allied supplied forces in reserve during the offensive. But the reason of this might have been both to keep them available, if Japan was to attack China's capital or just to preserve its forces, because they were the source of political power in China. So I did not put forward this argument, because I did not believe that opposing the Chinese Communists in the future was the only reason that the forces were held back. I also don't know what would have happened, if these forces were used against Japan (the ones that eventually ended up being deployed against the Ichi-Go offensive did not seem to make much difference).

2022-02-23 15:24:28 +0000 UTCThanks! You may want to mention at the beginning that the republicans in China kept much of their forces out of the front, to deal with the communist later. This division was the main reason the Chinese were so weak against the japanese.
