Meanwhile, with the main German focus back at the Eastern front, the Western Allies were able to breach the German defenses on a wide front, encircle the defenders and were now in the process of advancing through Germany with little opposition. With all hopes for any political solution to the war lost, all that was needed to end the conflict was a final push that would convince Germany to surrender.
