Laughed very hard at the "oh god oh jesus he's gonna say a slur isn't he?" but now I do need to know if you've been warned about episode 10 of the dub. Like I think it was a painfully obvious localization failure, but a lot of characters say a slur. Let's just say they all should have said "Drag Queen" and they did not.

This and Fruits basket were huge cultural phenomenons of the time. I remember this being insanely popular when i was in high school. It's definitely a parody anime and is enjoyable even for people who steer clear of romance anime in the same way fruits basket was. i watched the two series around the same time and both have a similar way of seeming one way, than diving into emotions of characters that makes you question the genre of the show.

Haruhi’s gender tends to be whatever is most convenient at the moment. They/them pronouns and the whole concept of nonbinary persons as we understand it today wasn’t really (at least in the mainstream) part of the discussion when this show first came out, similar to how Sailor Uranus’s gender is discussed differently now compared to when Sailor Moon was first released. Nuance changes as our understanding grows. If you want essentially the gender flipped version of this show, Princess Jellyfish/Kuragehime is fantastic. Fruits Basket is the best shojo anime.

As many have stated, the twins are only putting on an act for the customers, while it is very progressive, it does use lingo from early 2000s which now has more negative connotations. Additionally some scenes are made worse/questionable in English than they are in Japanese let alone from the Manga. Case and point to the scene you'll eventually see with kyoya as the scene is more about her height and strength but english made it about her sex. There are many things you will have to look at with the lense of it was the early 2000s, so please keep that in mind.

It takes A LOT of elements from the iconic shoujo series, "Boys Over Flowers" which has a very famous kdrama adaptation, anime, and a Taiwanese adaptation by the name of "Meteor Garden". The “let’s go to Bali” stuff was out of the club’s own coffers, which is paid for by the intake from girls who want to socialize with the boys and …some other stuff. Keep an eye on Glasses Character/Kyouya. He knows what he’s doing. 2. As for the BL/Twincest…are you new? Where have you been? Have you ever been on Ao3? These guys are pretty much the embodiment of Fred and George Harry Potter fanfiction. And it’s super popular with a female audience. That’s why the club provides them. Kyouya explained what the guy’s schtick and appeal was to their patrons. You’ll be relieved to learn that Honey’s appeal isn’t romantic. He’s supposed to be cute.

This show does representation so well and accepts its characters as they are. Haruhi is not the "genderfluid" character she just is and they move on. Ouran was the second anime I ever watched (aside from the ones when I was a little kid who didn't know what anime even was, like Sailor Moon and Pokemon lol). It's so silly but heartfelt. Honestly, even though it definitely HAS romance, I'd call it more of a comedy than a romance. Also, I could be misremembering, but I feel like Haruhi is never really treated as genderfluid/nonbinary aside from that one line...? Feels like for most of the show, she's just a girl who doesn't care that much about gender and doesn't get why the other host club members do haha

Jumped on patreon just for Ouran, I love this anime, watched it pretty much when it came out. Totally did not expect Danny to call Haruhi trans or gender fluid though. I guess, by modern standards I can kinda sorta see the gender fluid thing, but for me she was always just a girl like me and many other girls I knew in the anime community. A lot of us used male pronouns for periods of times, and didn’t particularly care about presenting as “typical” girls. But it was more about “fuck society that tells me how girls are supposed to look, behave and talk” than about “I don’t feel like a girl.” I love Haruhi because she’s my kind of girl. ^_^ This anime aged well. Also, poor Danny. He has no idea what’s coming with his “finally a sweet funny anime and not my usual pot of trauma.” 😅

Been thinking about joining for a while but the longer KPop Demon Hunters reaction made me finally do it. I'm really excited to go through this with you! It has been a really long time since I've seen it. I didn't even realize, because I watched it when I was way younger, how obvious it is that Haruhi is non-binary or gender-fluid. I think it is also cause I lived in the romance anime/asian drama sphere at that time and the "presents as a boy, is actually a girl" trope was very prevalent, but I don't think that is what we are seeing here on further reflection. It seems the same on the surface, but Haruhi really just doesn't seem to have a strong internal sense/feeling of gender which I feel like edges this into a more trans spectrum conversation.

So long as you are taking suggestions for what you should watch on Patreon! Disney's Gargoyles is a classic with a ton of themes and characters I feel you'd enjoy. The Legend of Vox Machina is a GREAT one that has both epic ess, humor and romance and with the spinoff and fourth season coming out the timing is great. RWBY is anime adjacent but is western produced and CGI and is one of my favorite shows ever. Season one is rocky due to it being independently produced but trust me it's worth it!

I think Ouran has sort of become an obvious watch for everyone of a certain generation (mid to late millennials) that watches anime. I can’t think of a single person I know that hasn’t seen it at some point or another, yet everyone I know that has seen it, also watched it as teens or young adults. So it’s such a joy to see someone experience it for the first time! It is genuinely an amazing show, with a really good plot imho. Aw man I really hope he enjoys this one. Ouran is such a fun, goofy show. It's not perfect, it's old at this point and that definitely shows it's colors, but this one is a classic because it's genuinely heartfelt, not because "teehee kek racy jokes." I haven't watched it in more than a decade and I'm sure it has a lot of dated gags but it's very tongue-in-cheek and ultimately a wholesome story about first loves and found families. Danny deserves to genuinely like a patreon anime for once and I hope Ouran will let him do that. (I resubscribed for it even tho my bank account currently running on fumes~)

Oh my joy. Oh my stars. Thank you. Thank you! I never thought you’d react to this, I legitimately assumed it wouldn’t be up your alley, but this is awesome! The plot does thicken later, but it is mostly a comedy, romance in the back, and unraveling and coping with deep emotions smack in the middle between comedy and romance. It really does have a lot of emotional intelligence overall. Oh also, in the manga the mangaka would write little bits about themselves and what’s going on in their life on the sides of the pages and publish it with that and it really made my day every time. She’s awesome. Warning… only one season and then they never adapted the rest ;w; The manga finishes off the story nicely though. Thank you again for watching this. I honestly am so happy.

Ouran Highschool Host Club is truly wholesome. The boys running/in the club are typical 'stereotypes' of men that women watchers/readers? like from what I know (or maybe that's just OHHC telling me that). But honestly, I love the classism divide as someone who is also poor just has to wonder 'ffs, how rich and out of touch are you guys?'. Honestly, it's half and half for me on what shows and movies you watch. I know of some of the animes you've reacted to, but was never interested in them, while the other half of the shows are ones I have seen and liked and want others to see as well. for non-anime recommendations, i tried to think of shows that could be finished/caught-up in a year or two. it was shockingly hard, and im a Western Animation nerd more than i am an anime nerd (i love both though). the vibes of HTTYD and K-Pop Demon Hunters is hard to match, ngl. also, please note, i am ignoring movies some of these shows have attached to them (also, im not incouding HTTYD tv series here purely bc of how long it is. im a huge fan of that show. but also its episode count makes it LIKELY better as a Youtube series than a Patreon one. again, im trying to think of Western Animated shows you could finish within ~2 years or less) ● Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. it has 39 episodes, so 2 eps per Patreon video would mean youd have 1 year and a bit more than half the months of a second year. it's very good. horrible design for Splinter, i despise it. BUT incredibly funny and entertaining show. it leans into the urban crime-fighting vibes that KPDH does, and the mutants' designs/powers are similarly as clever as HTTYD ● Lego Monkie Kid. it has 50 episodes, so 2 eps per Patreon video would be about 2 and a half years? i know you get recc'ed it a lot. it is genuinely very good. and it matches the vibes of HTTYD and K-Pop Demon Hunters, i think, in terms of being surprise sleeper hits of shows with rabid fanbases ● Infinity Train has 40 episodes. so it would take you 1 year and about 8 months to do a 2-episode Patreon monthly video about. it's so good. it has a different protagonist every season, it explores the train-setting in a way akin to HTTYD explores dragons, and its 2nd season and on gets into some KPDH themes Rumi experienced ● Dead End: Paranormal Park is a show youd finish in about a year. it has 20 episodes total, so 2 episodes per monthly Patreon video would take about 10 months total. its quite a good time, it deals with paranormal and demons (so KPDH would have a little something there), and it focuses on group dyanmics and friendship (so KPDH and HTTYD there) ● i also wouldnt be surprised if Steven Universe had to be a Patreon show (it goes way over the 2 year limit im setting myself in recs here tho), because of how much music it has and how much youd probably have to dub over the music with either your own voice or youtube-friendly-music or whatever. so thats also something to consider, i think. its bound to be one of the bigger shows youre requested to react to. i just worry on the logistics of copyright of doing it, but thats just me lol i have more recs i could offer, but that feels like a decent amount to not be overwhelming to consider while also being shows ive seen you get asked to react to a lot (at least since ive been here)

im really glad you like the show! its one of my favorites (waves hand at my Haruhi pfp in emphasis lol). i do want to warn you about a couple things? ● the Beach Episode has themes of sexual assault throughout it and plays into a weird trope about it. just... know that going into it ● the Beach Episode as a whole is also fucking weird. it made more sense in the manga, but the anime decided to make the message into something sexist. no clue why. originally, the manga had the Beach plot feature an argument about asking for help versus doing things on your own, all in this nuanced way, dissecting trauma and stuff. no gender politics at all. and the anime said "nah, let's botch this and make this Conflicting With The Show's Entire Premise And Message" and made it sexist. idfk why they did that ● there is a Lesbian Group that appears for ~2 episodes. the anime really leaned into some problematic tropes about lesbians that didnt exist in the manga (or, well, they did but then they were subverted and resolved. the anime doesnt do that subversion/resolution). mainly man-hating and being predatory. so just be aware of that propaganda. the OHSHC fandom is really divided on the group as a result of knowing "on one hand, this is obviously propaganda" and "on the other hand, they suck". so im not saying You Must Like Them (i certainly dont like them), just know that aspect about them when you inevitably get to that episode and make jokes ● the fandom also tends to see the last two episodes as having a possible Male Sexual Assault victim off-screen (mainly the second-to-last-episode, where youd see a guy pinned to a couch and then we cut to an unrelated scene). its a popular fan-interpretation (aka: it is valid! but also understandable if you're like "i dont see it". a common fan interpretations is not a universal interpretation). but wanted to let you know in case it would be triggering

I'm really glad you like it so far and that you understand how satirical it is. I first saw it over 10 years ago and it's one if my comfort anime. I do want to warn you, though, while it definitely has elements that are progressive/revolutionary for the time, there's still some messaging the fans don't agree with. The T slur is used at one point, too, so be aware of that. Also, I'm appreciating your open-mindedness to this show. It's important to know that this series is making fun of a lot of tropes in Japanese romances (such as the Huni being thought of as childish and the twins... doing the incest thing) and the characters are deeper than they first appear. :D

As one of the best shoujo anime, Ouran High School Host Club is one of my favorites because it subverts a lot of the cliches that shoujo anime/manga have, like the main character being really girly and dumb, or the guy being aloof and the second person to fall in love. One of the best simplifications of this show I’ve seen is that rather than “notice me senpai”, this show is “notice me kouhai”. Plus, this show has one of THE best anime dads in existence.

So about the twins…. They’re basically parodying a Japanese trope called twincest which is kinda gross. It’s not as common now, but in the early 2000’s and 90’s it was more frequent. The show makes it clear that it’s not serious about it, and the boys get individual development later on. I think it’s kinda funny in this show, but it’s understandably a divisive concept

Danny, I hate to be the one to tell you that OHSHC is basically a rite of passage for people who watch anime at some point 🤣 I’m pretty sure it was actually my first anime. Just wanted to let you know that episode 8 : The sun, the sea, and the host club is regarded as the worst episode by the fandom. It has very heavy themes of sexism and non-consensual actions. The episode butchered the characters personalities. I would recommend putting up a trigger warning when you react to that episode.
