New Video! TMNT x Justice League Turbo: The Future of Retro Fighters

Hey everyone! I'm here with a new release today and it's a special one. This is our first guest video featuring video producer (and ace videographer) Phil Nolan as he covers the story of TMNT x Justice League Turbo and the passionate community of folks behind the game. It's an awesome watch and I hope you enjoy it.

It's thanks to your support that I can commission and pay people like Phil to create cool content for the channel and I hope to make that a regular thing moving forward. So thanks again for all of your support. Let me know what you think of the doc and say hi to Phil in the comments (both on this post and on Youtube). Enjoy and more videos coming soon!

New Video! The Gundam Fighter That Rules Japan

Hey everyone!

I've got a new video hot off the encoder. This time we're taking a look at the Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs series and getting to learn what makes it so popular in Japan, as well as the small but growing scene in the States. Let me know if you'd like to see more on this series. Had a lot of fun learning about the game and would love to do something in depth with the developers if given the chance.

Enjoy the video. I'll have another update post about Look Alive and our next video later this week. Thanks again for your support!

New video! How Elden Ring and Dark Souls Teach Fighting Games

Hey everyone!

Have a new video out today, this time taking a look at the similarities between the Souls series and fighting games and how playing one might help you better understand the other. Let me know what you think and if you agree or disagree in the comments.

Now that I'm starting to get into a nice rhythm with juggling my other responsibilities, expect more videos sooner than later. Got an interesting idea for a video on the Arcade1up cab you can you see in the background and gonna get cracking on that this week. As always thanks for your continued support!

I've Been Striving To Do This For Awhile

If you follow me on Twitter, you've probably seen me talk about being stressed about interviews this week. Well, those interviews finally concluded last night and I'm excited to talk about the project: we're doing a feature on the development of Guilty Gear Strive! The folks at Arc System Works were super helpful and open to speaking with us and we have over five hours of interviews with some of the team including development director Akira Katano, art director Hidehiko Sakamura, audio designers Norichika Sato and Kosuke Kanno, and of course general director Daisuke Ishiwatari covering topics such as the decisions behind the new battle system and the music and art of Strive.

Since my Japanese is elementary at best, I collaborated with the amazingly talented Discovigilante for interpretation and they knocked it out of the park. Take a look at some of their notes from our interviews this week and see if anything sticks out to you (and be sure to give them a follow too!)

Obviously, I have a lot of projects to get to before deep diving into this edit so expect the final video to hit around the end of summer/early fall! As always, projects like this would not be possible without your continued support, so many thanks and hope you're as excited about this project as I am!

More soon!

New Look! New Updates!

Hello everyone!

It’s been awhile since my last update as I’ve been heads down on a lot of channel (and non-channel stuff). It’s time to let you in on some updates for our current slate of projects. Let’s get to it!

New logo!

As you can see, we’ve gotten some work done. Thanks to drewface, we’ve got ourselves a new look! Really happy with this new design and it’s a bit more flexible for us to use. Check out some of the variants below. We even got a cool little motion graphic made for intros/transitions!

Let me know what you think of this new design in the comments!

Life updates

So, part of the reason I’ve been busy is mostly due to paying the bills. I’ve taken an expanded role over at Games Done Quick handling their video edits (and even starting a highlights series for their Hotfix shows), so if you have a moment to subscribe to their new highlights channel, that would be most appreciated! I’m also working with Combo Breaker on a few projects I can’t talk about yet, but are really exciting and should be a lot of fun. With our logo now redesigned, my goal is to do a push for new patrons and funding (I haven’t really done a true promo video for the Patreon since we launched) in the coming months so I can start contracting some help (mostly editors, maybe some motion graphics folks) to help out as I’m starting to spread myself even thinner than usual. Once I have those plans nailed down, I’ll need your help to get the word out!

Ok, enough about all that. Let’s talk some upcoming projects

TMNTxJL

We’re doing a doc on TMNTxJL. And when I say we, I mean Phil Nolan! I’m really excited to highlight Phil on the channel as he's done some real great work in the past and he was really excited to take this on. I’ve been serving as more of a producer on this and helping him shape the story a bit, and I think we have something really good here. Check out the game while you wait for this doc to drop later this year!

Tough Love Arena

I’ve cut down our two hour talk with the creators of Tough Love Arena, Paul Weeks and Amy Xu, into a nice 30 minute video on the development of the game and the challenges of making a fighting game in a web browser. A lot of the focus for this video is on how important it is to have a beginner fighting game that you can play anywhere, so there’s a lot of really good stuff from the interview that just didn’t make it into the final. Because of that, $5+ patrons should expect the full interview as a behind the scenes feature soon after this doc drops later this year. No official release date yet, but I’d love to get this out in the next month or so.

Dark Souls 1 and Fighting Games

What is coming soon is a small video I’ve been working on about how Dark Souls 1 might be an unintentional fighting game tutorial. I’ve had a version of this video in my head for so long that I just want to get it out of my brain and onto the screen. It’s more of a video essay than something like the KOF13 video, so expect something short and sweet. I wanted to get this out before Elden Ring this week, but I’m too slammed with other work to really hit that deadline, so expect it early next week.

That’s all for now, but I’ll hopefully have a BIG update on something I’ve been striving for next month. Stay tuned.

[Patron Sneak Peek] Max Talks about finding Doctor Doom

Hey all!

Starting to work on my backlog of doc edits now that traveling has calm down a bit. Here's a clip of Max talking about his idea for Doctor Doom in Assist Me and how it lead to Simmons getting the part.

Hoping to have a script put together for this in the coming weeks and maybe have this out in April. Still not sure yet but will keep you posted!

New Video! What We Want From Fighting Games In 2022

Hey everyone!

Got one final video to close out 2021 this year and it's a fun one. I reached out to Sajam, Jmcrofts, Black Yoshi, Sharpie, Woolie, and Cuddle Core to find out what they want from fighting games next year. I even drop some wishes and ideas for myself and the channel too. Give it a watch and let me know what kind of things you're hoping for next year.

I also wanted to take the time to thank you all for your support this year. Without any of you, none of this would be possible and I'm truly grateful.  I'm hoping to expand this patreon a bit more next year to drive some funding for bigger projects and to keep things growing, so let me know if you also have any ideas for patron specific rewards/content. Thanks again and see you in the new year!

New Release: How Fighting Games SHAPED Kenny Omega

Hey everyone!

New video day! Decided to release part of my interview with Kenny Omega focused on how fighting games helped him find his path in pro-wrestling. There also may be some shots fired at the end of the video, so be sure to watch it when you get the chance!

This post is super late because I got stuck in the airport on my way to CEO, so apologies for that. Trying to optimize my upload times and the airplane wifi was just NOT working with me. Going to iron out my schedule a bit to avoid these weird last minute issues in the future but as always thanks for your patience. And if you see me at CEO, feel free to say hi. I may have to run to get a shot, but always love hearing from you all at events.

More soon!

New Video! How $15 Broke King of Fighters!

Hey everyone!

I'm back with a new video (that took me forever), this time focused on King of Fighters XIII's Team $15. These DLC fighters were so powerful, they would eventually define the meta of KOF XIII and in this video we're gonna take a look into how that happened.

Let me know what you think. Still playing around with this format and while they're a bit intense, I'm starting to find a rhythm with it. New, traditional docs are on their way too. Hoping to get Kenny's interview out in the next two weeks. Thanks again for your support!

The Overdue Big Update

Hey all!

Hope you've been well. Sorry for the radio silence over the past few weeks, but its been for a good reason. For the first time in what feels like forever, I 've been traveling around and shooting interviews in-person for new documentaries! It feels nice to be back in action testing a whole new recording setup and I have some cool stuff coming to the channel in the next few months. Let's talk about them!

Tough Love Arena

I had a chance to sit with Paul Weeks and Amy Xu and chat about the story behind Tough Love Arena, the browser-based fighting game you can pretty much play anywhere. It's a pretty cool story that dives into making a fighting game in such a unique space with such a small team.

Max And YoVideogames

We're gonna go behind the story of Max's rise to prominence as a fighting game creator as well as the origins of the YoVideogames crew! Everyone was awesome to chat with (they even let me play some Smash Ultimate with them on stream) and I'm pretty pumped to get this one released.

The Story of Hitbox

I headed to Hitbox HQ to talk with Dustin Huffer, one of the minds behind the Hitbox. I've been learning the Hitbox on and off for the past couple of months in preparation for this video and it's very impressive as are the details behind its origin and design. I still need to do one more interview with Shawn, Dustin's brother, to finish the story, so this one will probably be a little ways out.

Get In The Ring: The Story of CEO

I recently took a trip to Orlando to chat with Alex Jebailey about the origins and inner workings of CEO. This one has some fun interviews with additional folks who work behind the scenes to make CEO what it is today as well as a sit down with Kenny Omega to detail just how this fighting game event hosted not only a NJPW wrestling show, but was also host to the second ever AEW show in the states. I'll also probably have a one off video with Kenny detailing his experience with fighting games and why he decided to include them in his wrestling persona too.

Skullgirls

I mentioned this in our Skullgirls compilation from last week, but I'm also planning a large doc on the origins and history of its game and community. Obviously there's some rough stuff that had happened to the team over the last year and change, but what I'm aiming to cover is the story about how this game and its fans always seem to persevere in the face of adversity. Expect this one deep into 2022 to make sure I can navigate this story just right.

There's a few other big projects I have cooking in the background (I'm looking at you, Marvel 2) but they're not fleshed out enough to really talk about at the moment. I'm also going to continue with shorter topic videos like the recent Worst Matchups feature as well as start to experiment with clips from older documentaries, Youtube shorts, and even TikTok to keep a variety of content coming to the channel. I'm also thinking about opening a public section to the discord to better help promote everything we're doing so let me know what you guys think of that.

So yeah, a bunch of cool things coming to the channel. Hope you all dig these ideas and look forward to their eventual release. Not setting any hard deadlines, but will share as much as I can while I'm editing to our various tiers. As always, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below and I'll answer ASAP. Thanks again for your continued support and more soon!

Skullgirls "One More Once" Compilation!

Hey everyone!

Sorry this post is a bit late. It's been a hectic day today as I had to rush this to meet some deadlines soon after a flight. Anyways, I have a new release today consisting of our mini-docs on Skullgirls from the "One More Once" stream this past weekend. In it, we cover topics such as the characters of Skullgirls, memorable community moments, and more. I also tease some of our upcoming projects in the intro, so def give this a watch when you can.

I'll have a bigger post later this week about what's coming next to the channel in the coming months. Have a lot to get started on, so thanks for your patience while I've been running around the country getting these interviews recorded. Couldn't have done any of this without your support!

More soon. Enjoy the video!

One More Once Is Tomorrow!

Hey all!

Sorry for the radio silence. Been hard at work on all the various projects I have in the works at the moment and I'll have a big update on those in the very near future. One of the things I've been putting together are mini-docs for tomorrow's One More Once event in collaboration with Combo Breaker and BGCallisto. You can catch the action over at Callisto's stream tomorrow at 2pm CT and get some awesome Skullgirls related merch from the CB team as well. I'll most likely post the mini-docs here in some form for all you to check out if you miss the stream, but more info on that next week.

Until then, hope to see you in the chat tomorrow. More news soon!

Quick Update (And Max clip!)

Hey all!

Just got back from a hectic week of shooting a few of our upcoming projects. We have most of the interviews for our docs on YoVideogames, Hitbox, and Tough Love Arena recorded and I'm slowly making my way through them now. Got a busy few weeks ahead, so no release dates set for any of these just yet, but wanted to post a small Max clip to tide you over in the meantime.

Enjoy, and more news soon!

We're Doing A Tough Love Arena Feature. Send In Questions!

Hey all!

This weekend I'm talking to the minds behind Tough Love Arena, the fighting game you can play almost anywhere and I want to add some questions from patrons to ask them. Have you played TLA and if so, what would you like to know more about? Let me know in the comments!

And if you haven't played TLA yet, go do that right now. It's fun!

[New Release]: What are the WORST matchups in fighting games?

New video time and we're getting a little weird with this one.

Been wanting to experiment with more scripted videos and getting some of my personality out there and figured taking a look at some bad matchups was the way to go. Let me know what you think! Have a few more ideas that I want to explore in this style now that I have a better handle on the workflow, so look for these to enter to rotation alongside our more traditional docs.

Hope y'all are staying safe and well out there. More videos coming soon!

What's Coming Next? Matchups, Hitbox, and More.

Hey everyone,

Hope you're all doing well. I wanted to take some time to update you all on some of the projects coming next to the channel. In my effort to make more videos more often, I've scheduled quite a few things to film over the next few months ranging from documentaries to weird, more personality focused ideas that I'm pretty excited about. Let's get to it!

The Worst Matchups In Fighting Games

I put out a tweet a few weeks ago asking folks what they thought were some of the worst matchups in fighting games and got some really interesting responses.  Obviously a list like this is going to have some bias, but there were so many interesting suggestions that I decided to make a video out of it. We're gonna be focusing on just a few of them ranging from games like SFIV to KOF '95, but I'm hoping this does well enough to make a small series out of. Aiming for this first one to be around 8 - 10 minutes and should be out next week barring any issues!

FFXIV: The FGC Retirement Home

There's always been a running joke in the scene that FFXIV was the "FGC retirement home" and after playing an absurd amount of it recently, I think I understand why. This video is going to examine how FFXIV earned that moniker, as well as try to show why so many people in the FGC love playing this game. This one is still in a bit of planning, but I hope to have it out by the end of August.

Tough Love Arena Documentary

Honestly I haven't played many fighting games during the pandemic era. The lack of events and most titles having subpar netcode just turned me off from picking up a controller. But I did play a bunch of Tough Love Arena, the browser-based fighting game that you can play basically anywhere. With rollback netcode and an aesthetic that brought me back to that computer lab in high school, I really enjoyed my time with TLA. I'm going to be sitting down with creators Paul Weeks and Amy Xu to learn more about how this game together and should have that out for everyone next month!

Hitbox: The Controller & Company That Changed Fighting Games

I'm super excited for this video as I've been VERY curious about the Hitbox for years. If you don't know what it is, the Hitbox is a fighting game controller that replaces the traditional joystick with buttons for directional movement. If you've never seen it before, it seems a little weird but in practice it really changes the game as it allows for faster and cleaner inputs. I'm headed out to Vegas in September to visit the Hitbox office and learn the story behind the company and its products and examine the full effect they've had on fighting games. Look for that in October/November.

Maximilian_Dood & Yo Videogames Documentary

I've had the pleasure of speaking to and working with Max on a few projects like my Killer Instinct docs and his Twitch Rivals events that it just made sense that I should do something more focused on his work and impact on the genre.  I'll be talking to him as well as the other members of Yo Videogames in September for this and look to have this out in November/December-ish time.

And even more videos in planning for later this year/early 2022, including:

  • MBON: The Gundam Fighting Game You Need to Play
  • Get In The Ring: The History of CEO
  • Skullgirls Documentary
  • Smaller, personality focused editorials.

So yeah. A LOT of stuff coming in the next few months. Most of these will be in 4k too as thanks to your support I was able to buy some new gear, including the small but powerful FX3. I'm doing a complete overhaul on my gear to make my whole setup lean and mean and once everything is in and tested, I'm going to do that gear video I mentioned all those months ago.

Outside of videos, I'm looking to do a whole brand refresh of the channel including a new logo. We're two years old now (time flies) and I think it's time for a new look! Hoping to have that put together soon so I can get things like a shirt and other merch for the channel too so look forward to that in the coming months. As always, let me know what you think about all this in the comments or on our discord. Thanks for reading!

Events Are Coming Back And We're Getting To Work

Hey everyone!

It's been some time since my last general update and with offline events and travel coming back (keep every finger crossed), I've been hard at work planning and putting together our next projects as well as thinking about where I want to take the channel and patreon in the next year.

Upcoming Projects + More Videos

At the moment, I have about five different videos either in planning or production, including an interview with Woolie about his Guilty Gear Lore series coming next week. Some of these are gonna be short features that I'm experimenting with to fill the gaps between bigger docs, similar to the Helst video from last week. My goal for the immediate future is to have a video hit the channel every two weeks just to build some consistency in uploads and promote channel growth, as well as just shake things up a bit with my editing style. Long docs all the time can be quite draining to put together, so mixing things up a bit sounds pretty exciting for me.

Speaking of bigger docs, though. I really want to tell the story of Skullgirls so that will be my primary focus on that front for this year. I've chatted with Rick over at Combo Breaker about doing something really interesting to go alongside a possible SG video, so more news on that as it comes together.

Building Value for Patrons

One of the ways I feel like I can improve is by providing more content for you guys. Admittedly, I've been so heads down into things like Killer Instinct in the past that I haven't really given much time extra for patrons. That's going to change moving forward as I've switched up my production planning to build in extra content with almost every project coming up. So for example, all patrons in the $5 and up tiers will be getting an extended version of the Woolie video. I really want to provide more extra content for our various tiers, so let me know in the comments on what other patron extras you'd like to see in the future!

Speaking of Patreon, we've kept pretty good support throughout the pandemic era of the FGC, but one thing I noticed with the Killer Instinct videos is that there are some that would love to support a single project as opposed to the channel as a whole. Let's say there's a project I was striving to put together: would you be against a separate kickstarter-like approach for one project? Patrons would get any extras something like this would provide plus more as you guys are my long term supporters (separate credits, extended cuts, etc). This isn't anything set in stone, just feeling out the situation so definitely let me know in the comments how you feel about it.

That's all for now. Expect more updates as projects come together. I'm really excited for the next batch of videos as well as what the future holds for the channel. Don't forget we have a Discord just for patrons, so check your connections and join it if you'd like to ask me any questions or just hang out. Really want to put a focus on that over the next few months. Thanks again for your continued support!

New Release: How Do Fighting Game Events Return After Covid-19?

Hey all!

New video today, this time focused around the FGC's return to offline. It's the first 4K video on the channel and also an experiment for shorter videos in between bigger drops, so let me know what you think about the shorter format/style. Gonna be experimenting with different types of content moving forward too. Trying to find a rhythm consistent uploads without sacrificing quality and also trying new things like being on camera more.

Let me know what you'd like to see in future videos in the comments below. I'll have a bigger post on all of this in the near future, but gonna enjoy my day off today before getting back to work. As always thanks for your support!

Making Mortal Kombat X

Hey all!

Got a bit of a bonus video for you today. I had the chance to work again with Max and the Twitch Rivals crew for their MKX Lives event and part of that was getting a chance to chat with folks at Netherrealm Studios about making Mortal Kombat X. NRS (and especially Ed Boon) don't do too many community interviews, so this was an awesome and rare chance to get a behind the scenes look at the series.

This is a compilation of the vignettes from the event on topics such as netcode, guest characters, and more. Would you like to see more MK stuff in the future? Working on future plans and would love to reach out to NRS to do something bigger in they're interested. Let me know and enjoy the videos!

Composing Instinct - Mick Gordon On Killer Instinct

Hello everyone!

We have our final Killer Instinct video for you all today. Composing Instinct is a sort of collection of mini-docs with Mick Gordon and more breaking down various tracks from seasons 1 and 2 of Killer Instinct. Hope you dig it!

I'll be taking a small break this week to sort out a few ideas for upcoming videos, but I'd love to experiment with some shorter videos while I get some bigger docs together. What would you like to see on the channel going forward?

Thanks again for all of your support and hope you are all well!

Killer Sounds: The Audio of Killer Instinct

Hello everyone!

My latest doc, Killer Sounds, is now out for everyone! I'm pretty happy with how this one came out. Making a doc like this through mostly zoom calls is pretty intense and strange, but I think it came out pretty well. Like mentioned previously, this is the first of two features on KI's audio with the next being a deep dive into select tracks with Mick Gordon and some of the various artists who are on the OST's for seasons 1 and 2. Look forward to that on the 21st (or earlier if you're in the early access tier).

Enjoy the video and more soon!

Killer Sounds Coming June 7th!

Hello everyone!

Here with the announcement trailer for our next features. We've got Killer Sounds: The Audio of Killer Instinct dropping on June 7th and Composing Instinct: Mick Gordon On Killer Instinct coming June 21st!

Originally these were going to be out this and next week, but I got super busy with sudden projects like the MKX Lives show tonight that I decided to give them a bit more breathing room. I'm super excited to get both of these docs out to you all and can't wait for you to see them.

As always, thanks for your continued support. Hope you all are well!

It's Our Birthday! Here's some KI!

Hey everyone!

Today marks two years since I've launched this patreon. Time sure did fly by and I'm super excited for what comes next. To celebrate, I'm dropping another sneak peak at our upcoming docs on the audio of Killer Instinct for all patrons, this time we're looking at the interactive audio system and how things adjust during fights.

I also have soft launch dates for both docs. We're looking at a trailer to release on May 17th with the main doc launching May 25th and Mick's behind the scenes on seasons 1 + 2 the following week on June 1st!

I know it's been a quiet few months while I've been working on these docs, but I hope you look forward to them. As soon as these are done, I'll start talking about what projects are coming up next. Thanks again for your continued support over these last two years. Literally could not do any of this without each and every one of you!
