Netflix really did the creators dirty with the run time, because it was originally supposed to be a 3 hour movie but Netflix told the creators to shorten it down because they didn't think it was going to do well at all. Not only the issues she has with how hunters operate but also just like, the romance between yumi and the demon guy is just, also not earned enough to make his "death" feel genuine. so much stuff was rushed/no fleshed out but what we have is SO good

Honestly this movie needed the demon slayer treatment of taking the movie, and making it a show. There's so much that just didn't get to be touched on. Zoey and Mira as characters should have been allowed to be focused on more. Their doubts in Rumi, their thoughts on the reveal, everything. Rumi get's a lot of focus, and while i get what she meant when she said let's make a new one, more clarification and build up would have been preferred. The Saja boys could have used more time on the other boys, becasue as is. Only one of them is a character. there just wasn't enough time to properly develop this story. Which is sad becasue what we had, was really enjoyable.

Thank you for saying about that missing scene. I feel the same, in one moment she was like "this isn't worth protecting" and the next she was all like "yea, let's make a new honmoon". Personally I think there's at least 15-20min cut out. It jumped from the middle of the plot, where protagonist has her biggest crisis, right to the end. And I feel like what's also missing here is some kind of a Master Yoda equivalent, a wise, old person that helps the protagonist overcome her problem

Some little fun facts I’ve heard about this movie. Apparently that bit where Jinu is singing about the demon king in the beginning is the only time the VA actually sang in the whole movie. I’ve also heard that originally Gwi-Maw wasn’t supposed to just be fire and at that end fight he was supposed to reveal his true form. So it is vaguely possible there will be a sequel with his true form, but I doubt it. A kinda funny one for ya’ll, apparently “Saja” has two definitions. One meaning “lion” and the other meaning “reaper” so fully in English they’re either the “Reaper boys” or the “Lion Boys.”

KPDH definitely feels like it has holes if you don't know the Korean lore behind it. Including the Derpy Tiger and Magpie which are commonly seen in Korean art! I definitely think you're spot on with your final critiques. The film introduces a lot of heavy, interesting stakes, but doesn't see them all the way through. A lot of complexity, between world building, through lines, and character development, is implied enough to get our attention and emotional resonance, but not deeply enough to impart real knowledge. My understanding is that the film was supposed to be about 20 mins longer, and you can definitely feel that with some of the plot lines. Fixed in the sequels hopefully?

So her voice being gone was because of her doubt and insecurity in herself. The demons seem to manifest using your weaknesses and to her, her voice was what separated her from the demon she repressed. Her connection with Jinu helped her come to terms with that other part of herself rather than reject it entirely. Though I agree I did want another scene or two building that. Also the marks are likely a reference to how Kpop stars cannot have tattoos broadcasted on television due to SK law, so it could be a bad thing that she got to keep them.

yeah, I'm completely fine with jinu not coming back, which I'm not sure he even can. But I'd like to see more from the other girls. I know a lot of people loved Mira, for example, and I'd like to see something from her, maybe dealing with being estranged from her family. I'm also curious on how Rumi deals with the contrasts of being half demon, and knowing that some demons can be redeemed, but having sealed them away with the new acceptance honmoon (or whatever they made), or how the demons deal with gwi ma being gone (is he dead? did she just send him back? demons saw him defeated, with all new demon lord rise now?) I think there's a lot of places to go, for sure.

I always thought of the transition between Rumi talking to her mentor and "This is What it Sounds Like" being more of a "I have learned that what I am isn't shameful, and you should have loved me regardless. If the world you wanted me to make requires me to hate who I am, I will make a world where I don't have to." Then she goes in and intends to have a last stand or something, and her being transparent and true to herself is what breaks Zoe and Mira out of their trance of hopelessness.

that's exactly what i've been thinking! i love the movie, but it feels like if they'd had more time (and budget, which i'm sure was a huge factor) they could've done so much more to flesh out the characters and the world and really dig into the conflict and the consequences/impact of the demon's actions like you said, as well as the consequences of celine's inability to accept Rumi's patterns! I feel there's several plot points that unfortunately got rushed through and resolved a little quicker than i'd like; i wish we could've slowed down a bit in those points to allow us a chance to really *feel* and explore what those points meant for the characters and the plot.

Heard the movie was actually going to be longer but Netflix had them reduce the time so they had to cut a bunch of scenes, there was originally way more songs. Korea always have excellent dramas and movies. Ahn Hyo-seop, the voice actor for Jinu is in a kdrama called Business Proposal on Neflix, would def recommend you check it out. I think Rumi was struggling with the morality of killing demons but after things like the train scene and asking that one demon if they were a prisoner she kind of decided that demons are bad. I think when a human turns into a demon that is different than those who were always demons. Also to your point about the mentor scene and how she said she wanted to see the Honmoon destroyed, I think what she meant was that she didn't like what it was built on, she didn't like being forced to hide her true self and she doesn't believe that is what will make the Honmoon stronger. So instead she embraces her insecurities and fears in order to create a new Honmoon. This is why the Honmoon is rainbow at the end and not gold, to show that you need to accept all of who you are if you want to be able to help others. Which I think is a really great premise for a movie. Anyway I am also very excited for a sequel.

I think the quote was more like “if this is the honmoon you want me to protect then it’s better off gone.” To me this could imply not so much that it should be gone but that the version they’re protecting is flawed and should be recreated into something better. You’ll notice when they remake it, it’s not golden. Which means it’s not a full lock and key that they used to be aiming for. It’s more iridescent than it is blue like it was before, which could imply it’s “less strict.” The best bet is that they make some kind of sequel or short to follow up. It can’t just be gone because there’s still bad demons who will continue to steal souls and Gwi-ma still exists but they’ve also established that perhaps all demons are not bad. And also, Rumi is only half demon. She didn’t make a deal with Gwi-ma like other demons have. She was just born like that, so she’s inherently different. In control of herself instead of being controlled by her “sin” or guilt. Not saying your thoughts are not valid, because the way it ended felt somewhat incomplete, but it would be so cool to explore in future developments. If it makes bank like it feel like they are, odds are Netflix will greenlight something.

The songs tell a story as well. You can tell how the characters think about themselves and the world through them. Thats why the last song if about Rumi saying that while she is half demon and she saw that part of her as something that was broken and needed to be fixed or gotten rid of (like broken glass) she now sees beauty in it and that she won't hold herself back just because that's what she has been told to do. She wants to free the demons from the Main demon (I don't remember his name) but first she has to free herself.

For a sequel, I kinda like the idea of Jinu coming back bc she got his soul and its seperate from the demon world. I like it the most in the context of what I am about to say though : my biggest issue with the movie is Jinu is the only 'redeemable' one and we see no other demons stories. Its clear not all of them are born or made in the afterlife, but that some are humans who made deals and I wanted so bad to learn the story of the other Saja Boys. It could be possible only demons that were once human 'cannot die' a second time, and so if in a sequel we see Jinu somehow come back and want to help redeem his potential former friends that would be awesome. Also a prequel with Rumi's mom's story would be awesome!!!

I swear the bird (“Sussy”, literally) makes sounds that are like original Twitter or AIM client alerts, which paired with the Tiger (“Derpy”) passing notes for Jinu made me chuckle as an elder millennial. I also love Derpy a lot more than you do, but I love cats in general. I will definitely laugh if folks send you First Gen K-Pop like the Sunlight Sisters are based on, but for my money I recommend “It’s Raining” by Bi (aka Korean Usher), “I am the best” by 2NE1, and “Brand New” by Shinhwa for some excellent music videos.

I am so sorry for the long ass comment this is going to be lol but my friends and I were just discussing this earlier. So I was on your side of feeling like I missed something at the end there between the “If this is the hum-moon(?) I’m meant to protect I’m glad to see it gone.” And when she appears at the end of “Your Idol”. But my friend kind of explained it and I’m gonna do my best to do so now. So the Hum-Moon is blue but they are wanting it to be golden and that is supposed to make it permanent. People have brought up that the color gold represents purity and perfection. Which is why the hunters live by the idea of hiding their faults and fears, because that’s not “perfection”. So after talking to Celine, she realized she didn’t want to protect that vision anymore. She wanted acceptance. Which is why the final song is all about “letting the jagged edges meet the light” meaning to be open about those things instead of hiding them. Which is why the new hum-moon they created is rainbow colored. Representing love and acceptance. But that’s why it felt like we missed something. Cause when she said she was happy to see it gone she just meant that because she didn’t want to live by that ideal anymore not that she was siding with the demons.

Most people watched the second and third "How to train your dragon" without the series even existing yet, so I think you are good to watch the movies before the series too, the series is great and gives a lot of depth to characters, don't get me wrong but the movies are masterpieces without the series too und personally I feel there is a certain charm to watching the second movie and being thrown into the progress of the story without knowing the series first Of course both ways of going about it are completely fine, just don't stress yourself out too much^^ (Unrealted to httyd) It also seems like Danny missed out on a music genre he might really come to enjoy for the past years, welcome to the Kpop rabbit hole

I disagree with you about the ending. Rumi never planned on joining the demons or turning her back to the hunters. When she talked to Gwi-Ma she wasn’t about to join him, but was portrayed as defeated, as if his words influenced her like his words influence everybody else there, however she went there because she has found a new strength in herself. She was never on the side of demons, but found sympathy with her whole self through finding sympathy with Jinu. And then she found a strength to make a new hoonmoon that was created with self acceptance. Also, Jinu only had a little sister and a mother, not a daughter. However, I would agree that the movie needed more time, with example the mentor, but I disagree with Rumi having a “ideological issues” because it wasn’t that.

Honestly I'm not really satisfied with this reaction from Danny cause: 1) For an "Extended Edition" he cuts all the funny and good parts out 2) How dare he disrespect the demon tiger the big cute derpy boi (he was born with that face you can't be mad at him for that) 3) He completely skips over Rumi's hate for the lyrics and the discourse between the group that stems from it causing Bobby's spiral to think the group split because he wasn't a good enough manager My thoughts on the movie: After the first time watching this movie I loved it so much I watched it 7 more time till the AM (no lie, I've never done this for a movie before that's how good I thought it was). This movie does need more info though I can agree with Danny on that, a sequel or a prequal would be great, hopefully on the girls and how they may not have gotten along at the start of the groups creation (cause as Danny says they can't be top of the charts over night they had to start somewhere) and only really connect through explaining their upbringing cause there's so much lacking on that front between all 3 girls for example they say Rumi's dad was a demon but her mother was a hunter so she would have known but still made the choice to be with him so was the father demon born or made a deal with the demon king subsequently turning him into one, or was it more Blue Exorcist style where the demon didn't have memories so she had pity for him and a connection grew, or the other route he was in a love triangle with her and a 3rd party rival and made the deal for her heart in the end. Then there's Zoey and Mira we got a small rundown about their past at the start and in their song Golden but not enough really. Another thing I can agree with Danny on is there was no aftermath with Celine, there was the big outburst between her and Rumi but there was no reconciliation afterwards or talk about cohabitation with the good demons

Finaly! I felt so wierd for thinking the ending was so abrupt after all that lead up and implications...at least Danny pointed it out too. They just figure things out suddenly with no explanation or further expansion on if demons can be redeemed...whats the deal with half demons....or like showing us how did they reach their conclusion with the final song.

My take is that Rumi’s confrontation with Celine made her realize that the hoonmon was built on these ideals of “no one can ever see our faults or fears” and therefore must be torn down for the chance to build a new one on the ideals of honesty and acceptance. So when Rumi arrives at the concert, that’s her choosing to take a chance on Zoey and Mira accepting her if she shows them her true self. I do wish there was a little something in there, tho, like between the Celine stuff and showing up at the concert. Like, Rumi wandering despondently after her confrontation with Celine and then seeing like an old Huntrix billboard with her Zoey and Mira on it, and like having some kinda flashback, like maybe back to when they first formed Huntrix and maybe Rumi was taking on too much all by herself and Mira and Zoey had to sit her down like “Hey, you’re not doing this alone, we’re a team, you can come to us with anything and we’ll have your back, but this doesn’t work if you shut us out. You need to trust we’ll be there for you” and Rumi agreeing like “okay I trust you.” And that prompting Rumi to resolve herself to take that chance on Mira and Zoey and showing up at the concert.

My guess about the weird pacing is that it was initially meant to be a show or a series of movies but they either ran out of time or went over budget so they compacted it all into a single movie but I also wouldn't be surprised if we they made sequels and spinoffs

I think Danny got a bit confused at the end there. I don't think Rumi was necessarily with or against the demons at the end, she was always against Guima and against what the honmoon stood for. So when she arrived at the concert, she fully intended to stop Guima and create a new honmoon that is based on accepting accepting your faults, rather than hiding them. Also, can we also take note that in Jinu's song at the start he says that when Guima roared the earth shook, and when Rumi yells in her demonish form, the honmoon shakes, AND when Rumi sent him that invite Jinu thought it was a date AND STILL WENT ANYWAY ah!

I do kinda wish they had ended at the dramatic point and the second film was Zoey and Mira fighting to get their friend back from the dark side. But all together I really enjoyed the film and have not stopped listening to songs since I watched it.

I see it as more her issues were with her personally not being accepted and her mentor instilling that fear of herself and lack of acceptance she feels for Jinu because she likes him, but aside from asking that one demon she doesn’t show much interest in the rest of them. She personally decides she is still huntrix and still a demon slayer in the end despite her demon half. Her no longer feeling shame is why her voice came back and why she chose to remain who she is but accepting both halves of herself

The only issue I have with this reaction is Danny constantly calling it a kids film. The simple fact that it's an animated movie does not make it a kids film. Yes this is a family friendly movie but that doesnt mean its targeted mainly for children. Considering the themes, it is very much a film targeted towards those that are at least young adults and as well as those who are K-Pop fans. Other than that I did love seeing his reactions to all the major scenes as well as the music.

I agree, the movie needed more time to breath. It felt like the creator wanted to go a darker route but was confined to a kids movie. Also it's not much, but a note; when talking to her mentor at the end, it felt like Rumi was breaking generational trauma. She rejects hiding and says "If this is the honmoon I'm supposed to protect, I'm glad to see it destroyed." then says she'll make a new one. Again, would've loved a longer breakdown, but I find some of the lines were carefully placed and thought out.

She realized that a lot of the old lessons passed down had some flaws, she realized that shame was something powerful that might've been doing more damage... I’m sure someone already said it but the patterns grow from the shame the demons feel- Gwi Ma lures them it into feeling ashamed and self hatred to devour their souls and then turn them to demons (the human turned demons at least) now with Rumi she was born part demon- but taught to feel ashamed of that part of her and taught to hate it now it’s interesting considering her mother, a hunter, clearly got WITH a demon to have her going against the way of hunters entirely- so Rumi could’ve been born if a forbidden love- but raised by Celine who still holds the fear of demons hence her patterns grow, when Jinu doesn’t hear the voice and Rumi can sing it’s bc they aren’t ashamed of themselves together- it’s acceptance of themselves and feeling accepted- silencing the shame and raising their own voice (until jinu falls back into shame for lying)

This movie did make a great foundation but didn't answer the most important questions about the lore they set up, like what is the demon hierarchy (the Saja boys, goblin looking ones, and the KH heartless esque one) and are we supposed to want them to be redeemed, or what is the deal with Rumi's parents. The ending just simply doesn't have anything to do with all the themes they built up.

This movie is great. I love it. The songs are great. They've been on repeat on my Spotify since it came out. However, you are right that it definitely feels like scenes are missing, and certain things weren't explored all the way. To me, it feels like they pitched this idea as a 12-episode season, but were told no and given a movie instead, and they had to cut stuff to make it fit.

One of the biggest things about K-pop is that there is this massive expectation for all of the idols to be perfect. I felt that this movie did a great job of showing that at the end of the day we’re all just human beings and we’re not made to be worshiped. It’s too much pressure and it’s not right to put so much pressure on these performers. My assumption is that Rumi was rebelling against the pressure itself and the expectation to be perfect because we all have flaws and things we’re ashamed of. Also, Jinu is essentially a human who went to hell because he basically made a deal with the devil. He redeemed himself by giving her his soul, maybe she didn’t have one because she was born half demon? It’s sweet how they basically saved each other😁

I think a lot of the issues that gets pointed out at the end are mostly summed up by just time and budget. Like, they couldn't know how well it would do or if there would be supported for a sequel so they had to make it into as much of a passable one off as they could and then build from there.

Your point bout it feeling like scenes were missing is exactly what I said after I saw it. It was badass enough that it still worked, but the pacing felt choppy and disjointed at times with what I can only assume were lengthy scene cuts. The Jinu sacrifice was good, but I feel like it really missed its peak emotional point because we didn't get as much time to invest emotionally in him has a character outside of that one duet.

I think this was supposed to be a series. Either that or it’s a bit of a sloppy way to set up a sequel. There are way too many unanswered questions: what’s the story behind her parents being a hunter and a demon? does rumi ever get resolution with celine? they said the golden honmoon stays up for a year, but what about the rest of the time, especially considering how this is the first time this specific group of hunters has done this i think? how did zoey and mira end up joining the group? what’s celine entire story? what happened to past hunters in general? WHAT ARE THE STORIES OF THE OTHER SAJA BOYS?!

I made this comment before watching this video, so excuse me if it just recounts your thoughts. I love this movie. I think it's a little fast paced and the animation throws me off a little (like when they're singing but nothing is moving except their mouth, which is moving very minimally? It like, freaks my brain out) but the plot overall, SONGS, and Choreography make it hyperfixation-worthy. Especially the songs and Choreography. The dancing is super cool, that's one thing, but the fighting looks literally incredible as well

I think the reason the ending works is because while Rumi has issues with the way that Celine (her mother figure) and the Hunters' ideology, she A) came back to create something new. She wasn't rebuilding the honmoon to what it was, she was trying to make something different. And B) because she always felt like she Mira and Zoey would understand. And ultimately they do and so they joined her to build something new.

Hey Danny, so I wanted to clarify that the two people Jinu abandoned weren’t his daughter or wife, it his mother and sister. And I do agree that the ending left much to be desired and the reveal of demons being controlled by Gwi-Ma through their insecurities/darkest fears not being resolved was very disappointing. As we only saw Jinu being tormented by it and yet the other demons seemed completely fine. It’s disappointing that they introduced this plot point and yet did nothing with it. However the movie was amazing all the same, with the songs and the animation.

I had a great time, but I do agree with a lot of what you said at the end. They didn't address the casualties that much or even show any other demons with feelings other than "i love soul stealing" lol. The Bobby "betrays" them thing was like, yeah, he became a fan of the Saja Boys but he wouldn't ditch his girls, he loves them too much. He wasn't in on that demon plan to draw Zoey and Mira away from Rumi and shatter the team. I would love Juni to come back in any form tbh lol. He's just so cool. And I think it would be interesting if the rest of the Saja crew got their own arcs. My favorite song was def the one they sang while dressed up like creepy pilgrims though; that was the most perfect demon song they could have sung—possessive, enthralling, dark, toxic. Awesome stuff. I loved this movie so much and can't wait for more!!
