This is one of the movies I'd almost call the "Anti-Duaffy" films (Fight Club might be another). Self-absorbed - you're 100% there, that's really the key to this movie as I understand it. It's surreal on purpose, but showing how vapid and empty 80s Wall Street society was, how businesses were stuffed with interchangeable hollow men in suits doing nothing, parasites. A society so corrupt that no-one would even notice a psychopath running around killing people. Is Patrick really a killer in the end? Or did the meaninglessness of his life drive him to fantasize something, anything to make him interesting? One particularly great touch is that the scenes with Willem Dafoe's detective were filmed three different ways: Kimball knew Patrick Bateman killed Paul Allen Kimball didn't know Bateman killed Allen Kimball wasn't sure if Bateman killed Allen Then they edited together all three versions for the final movie- which is why you weren't sure if the detective was just playing with Bateman (he was, in some of the shots). Just another thing adding to the weird, off-kilter feeling of the film.
