This was the episode that originally aired first, and the writers therefore had to basically come up with a new "pilot" episode that introduced all the characters. Like you said Duaffy, it does actually kinda work because it helps fill in some of the gaps/make it clearer what it's about - and we get a good old-fashioned heist as well. We also get to see what kind of man Mal is - he'll take a dirty job, but refuse to do it if he feels it's too dirty. At the same time, he'll kill a man in cold blood if it might head off trouble down the road. Not your normal hero! It's hard not to love Inara :) - I really like what she says here about "people have an energy that's hard to hide". We see that in her, and we definitely see it in Niska. In terms of the war and the politics - yeah there's a few details about the world of Firefly that I could say, but I don't think I will. None of us knew any of those details when we watched it for the first time. This episode starts to tell you how things might not be so great under the Alliance anyway, and naturally, you're perceptive enough to notice that. So why not just let the show play out? :)

Joss Whedon read a book on the Confederate War just before creating Firefly. The "Independents" are essentially the Confederacy, and the "Alliance" is the yankees. I don't think Whedon meant for it to be such an accurate analogy for Reconstruction era America, but I loved it.

There’s only so many things you can call your space government. The Alliance, the Federation. On Babylon 5, which Mass Effect takes a lot of cues from, the human government is the Earth Alliance. The war was just the Alliance trying to make sure they had all worlds under their control. So, interesting things happening here. What ramifications do you think it will have in the future? And technically, Serenity is a merchant ship. Fireflies are freighters, and if any official asks, that’s what they do, haul cargo. Which is true, just not always legal cargo.
