Questions?

Hey all,

Liam Catterson messaged me today asking to do a special ReactorCast talking about The Body and The Gift since he's recently watched them. We're recording it on Monday but I thought after our discussion we could answer some Q&As about both eps so if you have any questions for us regarding either or both episodes let me know!

Comments

Talking about Buffy can make us Realize we are all just flawed, & human. & We all need Understanding, when it comes to such a hard subject, to deal with. Sometimes alone... I love that you guys have all this emotion which makes you two of my fav guy Reactors. Two Doctors sussing it out. This Reactor Cast Buffy Reactions over the Body, was what alot of us needed thank you Liam & Of course Special guest Reactor Peter Liam Parker. Thank you again Cheers.❀️🌎❀️. πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸΆπŸ°β€οΈπŸ€˜πŸ»

This was such a great idea for two Liam's. & Out of our grief, can come comfort, & even giggles.

How do you feel about Buffy's absolute unwillingness to allow Dawn to die? Given that the whole world would be destroyed anyway, Dawn included, and given that Buffy was faced with a similar impossible choice three years earlier with Angel wherein she "killed" Angel because she had to. But now, she cannot bring herself to do the same to Dawn. Does this speak to how Buffy the character has changed over those three years? If so, what has changed? Or, is it simply that she can't lose Dawn, of all people? And do you think the events of The Body played a significant part in Buffy's outlook here?

Something reactors seldom comment on is Buffy's conversation with Joyce's doctor in the hospital waiting area. In particular the part where Buffy hears "I have to lie to make you feel better" even though this is clearly not what the doctor says. I find it a striking moment. Is the doctor lying? Should he? Regardles, what Buffy hears certainly implies that she believes it's a lie. Further, her comments to Angel in Forever suggest that Buffy also feels partly responsible for her mother's death (because she didn't get there in time even though it "probably" wouldn't have made a difference). Do you think this misplaced guilt contributed at all to her decision in The Gift?

Nobody Deserves Mime

When both Liams have finished the show and can reflect on the foreshadowing, I would watch the shit out of this.

Nobody Deserves Mime

There was a lot of time spent on making sure the audience didn't hate Dawn or think she was a demon. A lot of time and dialogue saying that Joyce's aneurism had nothing to do with Glory OR Dawn or any of the supernatural. Do you believe that? Do you think that the memory dump when the monks sent Dawn to Buffy had ANY effect on Joyce's brain? Whether it exacerbated any pre-existing weakness/problem?

Scott Rabie

Ok. I'm not suggesting any questions because the ones I'm seeing from other people on here are a lot more insightful than I could come up with. But I'd love to hear your thoughts on just how incredible the acting was in The Body. Buffy's scenes at the house, Willow in the dorm, Anya's speech! Plus Willow and Tara sharing their first onscreen kiss in such a wonderfully wholesome and loving way. Such a good episode!

John

Wow. I dont know if that ever occurred to be before. Yeah, not even in a cutaway scene somewhere. Neat. Well, I would lump Spike in with Glory etc for this one... there's only enough time to explore such a powerful conversation that they just could not include anything that wasn't specific to that core group without sacrificing somewhere else.

John

Could The Gift have happened without The Body? Buffy's unwillingness to endure any more loss is a major driving force in her not willing to sacrifice her sister to save the world (in contrast to her ability to make such a decision with Angel years prior).

SpikesEcho

I've heard some feel that Buffy's sacrifice in The Gift was a glorification of suicide. I've never felt that way about it. Thoughts? Also, even though Buffy's sacrifice gets me every time, the fact that Dawn's ready to sacrifice herself to save the world, even before Buffy's ready, actually tends to diminish what's supposed to be Buffy's unique heroism/sacrifice/gift in my eyes if I think about it too hard. Thoughts on that?

SpikesEcho

The vamps presence at the end of The Body is often criticized....did you feel having that supernatural element shattered the raw reality that Joss worked so hard to immerse you in? Or did the inclusion of something so classically Sunnydale (a reminder that this is indeed still buffyverse) in an episode so unavoidably real actually just lend more weight to the believability of the verse?

SpikesEcho

Oh this one. I wanna know too.

Jayna

How long after viewing The Body did you realize that Spike was (rightfully) left out of the episode?

Yesmydog

Same lol

Tina Lawrence

did bens death impact the way you view giles?

colton

LOL...when I saw this post all I could think was "Questions? Comments?"

Re: The Body, I was wondering what you both thought of the way Whedon gave everyone their own unique way of displaying grief. My problem with most shows is that whenever there is a loss, everyone seems to have a sort of uniform, cookie-cutter reaction to death, when in reality people experience grief in very different ways to one another. Do you think "The Body" helps to normalise this, and do you think other show and film creators could learn something from this episode, and try to approach the subject matter in a more realistic way, like Whedon did? Would love to your thoughts.

I would have loved to see uz re watch restless together.

Shauni Livingstone

I guess I don't really have any questions about those episodes. The Gift has some amazing moments (Spike and Giles come to mind). The Body is a brutal experience. Maybe: At what point did you realize there was no music and hardly any background sounds?

G. Smith

Agreed. I was asking my question and tried to make it as non spoilery as possible but am worried at least some implied (not explicit) spoilers seeped through. Hopefully Liam D is able to find a way to present the question without spoilers while keeping the essence of the question the same. This is a good filter.

This is gonna be great. I'm glad you're asking on your patreon as you can weed out anything spoilery for seson 6 - it might be hard to ask questions about that ending without saying something spoilery for season 6! I have a couple of questions: On a scale of 1 to 10, how evil is Joss Whedon?! Was the Body the most emotional you've been to any TV show or movie? If not what was more emotional?

Sharon Owen

Personally I have always thought the show show could have ended with the Gift and I would have been satisfied. I know a lot of people are bothered by the idea of the series ending with Buffy dead but I feel it would have been an excellent, bittersweet ending her character that wrapped up so many themes of the show nicely. I used to hate season six and seven because I had so much loyalty to the idea it should have ended with the Gift. I no longer feel that way but I still think if the Gift *was* the series finale I would have been deeply satisfied, and if I'm honest the fact that the show continued kinda diminishes the Gift for me, which is sad because it would be my favorite episode if it was the series finale. What ate your thoughts on this?

Roger Lackman

Oh, this is going to be great!
