Dollhouse - 2x04 “Belonging” FULL REACTION

The scene where Topher meets Priya in the institution is so messed up. Over the years, I've seen some schizophrenic emails and letters sent to different employers of mine. They express things like: they're watching me, they've tapped my phones, the CIA is after me, Trump and Obama are personally tailing me. I took a photo of one, here's a few exerts (ellipses not added): "MOVE...KNOW A TIGER WAS...5000 JESUSES...BEFOREBETHLEHEM" "OH...I DIDN'T KNOW...YES YOU DID...SHE WAS KILLED...RIGHT...DIDN'T EVEN HAVE...RIGHT...EXCITEMENT...ONDLED...POLICE" "Lost Will & Testaments 'gifted 9 Billion Personal Gifts which are yet owed to Me." "Please help! I own My Copyrighted HOUSES [ESTATES]" So I can see why everyone just dismissed Priya :( it's awful. Even if it was a trick to make it only appear that Priya was schizophrenic, I wish more was understood about it in general. It seem conspiracies of government people controlling you (more than the usual amount, you know, hands on, black vans and Agent Smith types) is a common theme.

The shows narrative voice is its biggest flaw for me. Sometimes it seems so concerned about humanizing Adele and Topher and the dollhouse employees, it stops being a commentary on their future human trafficking enterprise and buys their self-justifying evasions of responsibility. I wish it spent as much time sympathizing with the backstory of some of the victims here, but often it seems more interested in them as dolls that are sci-fi occasions for contemplating identity and memory. Just my opinion. I share to say I get/feel your outrage here....I still appreciate the show’s ambitious scope…and its clearly inspired great newer shows like Humans, Westworld and to some extent even the OA.

This is the episode that made me basically give up emotionally on this show. Priya isn't guilty of murder, she's a victim of kidnapping, sex trafficking, and slavery. And keeping her stashed there after righteously killing her rapist isn't for HER protection, it's for the Dollhouse's, whatever the dulcet smooth tones of Harry Lennix can try to assure her. I'm gonna disagree with Mel Saville -- Adele can excuse the actions of the dollhouse because she's an awful human being. EDIT: And the same point I make about the handler from Season 1; spare me, Adele, your moral outrage over what this guy did to Priya and why he engages her, because much like the handler who - had he millions of dollars to spare - you'd have gladly sent her to him in Doll state to have his way with, I see no reason not to think that this guy could have just cut you a check to send him Priya-Actual to take by force before you wiped her again as long as it was fully disclosed to make Topher's job easier and, like a long and sordid history of sexual slavery the world over customarily requests, he didn't "leave marks".

That is my favourite episode of Dollhouse ever. Topher is my favourite character, Fran Kranz is the actor that plays him, he was in Cabin in the Woods by Joss Whedon. That is why this episode so good and so important in regards to what we have seen about the future and about how Topher is in the future. Priya and Victor are so interesting and I love it. The actors did amazing jobs. I think that Adele is able to excuse the actions of the dollhouse because they sign contracts to be there. Slavery but consensual slavery I think they have called it. This show always fucks me up when it comes to morals and the grey area. Such an amazing show.

Mel Saville

Definitely one of my favorite episode of this show. That's a great point about the absence of Ballard, because his presence and perspective would have made it a very different story. I'd forgotten that Jonathan Frakes directed this. He's best known for playing Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation, but he's directed a lot of television, including "The Well" from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
