With regards to the earthquake being too coincidental and it possibly being bad writing. I would argue it's actually pretty clever writing. Wesley called out the ridiculousness of using an earthquake as an omen in the last episode. Earthquakes are incredibly common here in California. In fact we had a decent sized one just yesterday.

If he hadn't talked to that talking Burger statue, then maybe MAYBE… he wouldn't have gotten so paranoid and made all these connections to the prophecy and saw all the signs but then again... him conniving with Holtz just drew the line. I feel like Wesley's book smart-ness (like Willow) does not provide him with the street-smarts (like Angel) to really comprehend the consequences they'll face. People like him lack the common sense to see what's the price of taking those risks (ie: Willow using spells to drive a car and losing control of it)

Boy did Wesley pay the 'Pryce' for what he did lol 😅

It's like Wesley's just repeating his history of 'betrayal' and then facing dire consequences and punishment for it. Kidnapping Faith back in Buffy and then kidnapping Connor. Boy, he paid the price with his life here and he shouldn't have gotten that close to Justine who was pretty loyal to Holtz this whole time but it was really brilliant how that scene played out. Her story was so convincing and it worked 'cause they already met up earlier. Wesley was gullible to think that Holtz would play by HIS cards but no, the man's got more experience and wit. Sorry Wesley. But the scene in the end where Angel's left crawling on the ground, just traumatized at seeing Holtz take his son to a place where he simply couldn't go through. I wonder if Holtz was really going to risk getting killed just by threatening to kill the baby 'cause wow, that would suck for his end game when he could've exacted his revenge at that moment (like killed his child in front of him and THEN get killed). Fortunately for him, Sahjhan came in and let him live and Connor so that he can escape to the hell dimension (so he figured, let Angel suffer at losing his son to his enemy instead of having him witnessed his son's death... either way, they won the fight).

Wesley also betrayed everyone and kidnapped Faith in s3 of Buffy, and his failure to complete the kidnapping also made that situation much worse.

My favorite thing about this episode is all of the moments where it almost could have turned out differently but didn't. All the signposting makes it feel inevitable, but without all that miscommunication, this could have easily been stopped. I don't normally like miscommunication being leaned on so heavily as a story device, but it clicks perfectly in this episode. Like Wesley didn't know about the spiked blood thing, he was with Holtz at the time and Lorne almost told him in the scene where Wesley takes Connor, but assumes Wesley knows about it and Wesley is too distracted to ask about it. If Wesley had known, he'd realize there's someone trying to get Angel to kill Connor and might backtrack on his plan till he had more information. I also forgot that Wesley's motivation in this particular episode isn't 100% about protecting Connor. Holtz also threatens to kill everyone, which on its own is not enough to motivate Wesley to betray them, but combined with everything else it helps push him forward. And then once he knocked Lorne unconscious and then everyone came back and the walls were closing in on him, he was partially motivated by not wanting to get caught. Like if one of them had told Wesley about the spiked blood in *that* moment, it *wouldn't* have stopped him because he reached the point of no return. Sleep deprivation + panic + a splash of daddy issues.

KT

Exactly, he wants to hurt Angel, that's all, by taking his baby that hurts him

The Loa (hamburger statue) basically told us last episode what you said at the 46 minute mark. I've watched this series so many times, and this is the first time I realized the Loa was being simultaneously specific AND vague. You might be better at reading prophecies than Wesley.

I don't think Holtz really cares for Connor. He was ready to snap his neck at one point. He just wants vengeance on Angelus.

I think this is a different situation from the Shanshu prophecy, though. Angel lives with the possibility of his death all the time. Hearing a prophecy about that possibility isn't as complicated as hearing about something he's supposedly going to do that he can't/won't believe he could be capable of. I can see why Wesley would be reluctant to tell him about this particular prophecy -- and maybe trying to find a way that he won't *have* to tell him.

Lilah is one of my favorite Buffyverse characters, full stop. Rawr... like a cat.

Rachael

I like the fact it was so avoidable. If Wesley had said something to Angel, or if Cordelia had been there, things would have been different. To me, that makes it a lot more heartbreaking than if there was nothing anyone could havecdine.

I just love the Trio. Funny trio. Dark as fuck trio. It all worked for me. (The 3 faces of the trio were brilliant too. Warren who for a second feels over his head in Dead Things but then just embraces evil. Andrew who feels over his head, but puts his faith in Warren. And Jonathan who knows they are over their head after Dead Things, but feels sort of trapped now (I think.). Dead Things turned a funny joke (to me) the first half of the season, into something deadly serious.

Richard Lucas

It's important to remember that all plot is contrived to some degree. The fact that Cordelia isn't there at this crucial point is contrived, but necessary. That said, Charisma Carpenter was away getting married and on her honeymoon, which is the actual reason Cordy's not there. There's so often a meta-reason for why things happen in these shows. Would they have still sent Cordy away if Carpenter didn't get time off? If not, how would the plot have been different if Cordy was around? It's interesting to think about, but I guess ultimately it doesn't matter. Cordy was gone, this horrible stuff happened. Terrible timing, but the cards are always stacked against the heroes of the Buffyverse, so what did we expect?

That doesn't make sense. The body was an entire season ago at this point.

Chess Red Eagle

Such an amazing episode, also love it any time Lilah gets screen time, my favourite Angel villain.

Valkyrie

It worked just fine, and so I can say that I really like Sahjan (?); I agree that he’s a better comedic villain than the Trio, but then he’s not meant to be the same. Clearly he’s not incompetent, just intangible. 😆 I also find him funny and likable as heck, and for some reason also reminds me a lot of Meatloaf.

Koz

Although I think Buffy is the superior show, I consider thIs episode and this arc to be one of the best things Whedon has ever written. In particular, that scene with Lorne and Wesley is astonishing.

Nick Earl

If you want a real dick punch, this aired a week after "The Body"

Dan H

Glad you’re enjoying Lilah more. I love how she’s not angsty about being evil, and almost all her scenes this season have a mix of snide barbs and deadpan humor.

Shashank

works fine
