Angel - 3x09 “Lullaby” FULL REACTION

Such a beautiful episode and it was so touching in the end when Darla unexpectedly staked herself, sacrificed her own life, in order for her child to be born. That is something that you won't find with any woman who dies during childbirth. Darla needed to do that in order for the child to be born or else the child will die eventually so perhaps part of her knew she had to make that choice. Plus, she knew that even if the child was to survive, she'd live but will remain soulless and will eventually no longer remember feeling the love for her baby and she wouldn't allow that. It's like her baby was trying to tell her that she needed to feel that love even if it's only for a brief time... just like the time when she became human and realised that she had to accept her mortality and face death like any mortal. She chose the better part at this point and that's 'cause this was her only chance to experience love but to also be a mother not just a vampire carrying a human child.

Who would guess from Buffy season 1, that Julie/Darla would turn out to be one of the best actresses in the Buffyverse.

Richard Lucas

Was it Julie Benz who said that Angel is the show where Buffy characters go to get character arcs? We have Angel, Darla, Cordelia, Wesley, Chanterelle/Lily/Anne, and Faith (her redemption arc).

I also agree there is a part of me that would have loved to see Darla give birth and fight to keep that love, and be a mother. I think of Spike and how he is soulless, but he can love and protect and care. I think, despite what Angel and Darla believe, in many ways they did love each other. As much as either could without a soul. Not the same as Spike, or Dru (though I think her love was twisted by madness). But yeah, I would have enjoyed seeing Darla try to be a mother and fight her nature, or something like that. BUT this was such a touching ending to Darla's story. Such a shame we didn't get Ats s2 and s3 Darla in s1 of btvs... I adore her character.

This episode... every scene with Darla and Angel just makes me cry so much. Its so upsetting, so touching and tragic! God. After everything we have seen and learned of Darla, she gave up her life to save her child. She couldn't bear to lose him... or his soul.

Tim is so good with the Darla and Angel relationship and at using flashbacks. The flashback for Holtz makes him the most sympathetic he's been so far, and his trauma informs the way he reacts at the end, which is very chilling.

FYI, the file name is "Buffy 3x09"

“NOOOOOOOO. The alcohol.” That made me laugh then go, “Same, Liam. Same.” Liam, did you actually knock your camera over in frustration? lol I like your new setup: the acoustics are fine, and the colored background is easier on my eyes than the bright white wall. But your sofa is probably more comfortable for you.

Rachael

oh.. and another brilliant episode thanks to Mr. Tim Minear

Mark Judge

Oh Liam, believe me when I say we all went through what you have just went through, we all cried for Darla 😭

Great review. Great episode.

funny, Not sure why I hadn't thought of this before, but I just realized that this experience is quite different for each of us, meaning, we are not experiencing the same thing. Not even generally. It would be wrong of me to try to guess what this experience is like for you, the reactor, but for me or us, I SEE you. AND I SEE you react. and I hear you explain, so because of that, at times, when I sit down to watch a Liam reaction, when Liam comes on, I say, "Hello Friend" and actually consider Liam a friend. Whether it fits in to what some would define as a friendship, I don't know. But I believe that the experience for Liam is very different, as he is receiving maybe 10% of the input that we receive.

It’s been here 3 hours and I only just noticed..!!! Wow !! 🥰🥰🥰

This episode is incredibly emotional. David Boreanaz and Julie Benz were amazing in this one. Massive credit also goes to writing and directing.

God. I can't get through any of Darla's scenes in this episode without crying. How desperate she was in season 2 to escape all the feelings that come with having a soul. Wanting to die to not feel anymore. Eventually accepting her death as the just thing, that the purpose of her second life was all about death. Which it is in a way, but it's a shanshu. She dies to give life to another, and to hold onto the newfound value in her own life -- love. Her dead body isn't capable of giving life... except it is, it's precisely that she's dead that allows the baby to be born unscathed. And her immortal soulless self continuing on after giving birth would also be a death of sorts, like how Angel's turn in Buffy s2 felt like a death. I'm normally not a fan of pregnancy storylines, but this is a big exception. There's some sticky political implications to some of this in a more broad sense, but the way it was executed and the really specific circumstances they set up make me not worry about them as much as I normally would.

KT

You have been flying through these episodes! I can't wait to see your reaction to this.

Tia

It is indeed. Looking forward to this one.

Rachael

Yes... one of the best episodes of the show.
