Buffy the Vampire Slayer - 5x13 “Blood Ties” FULL REACTION

Comments

This isn’t a favorite episode for me. It has some delightful moments and some powerful ones, and the actors give it their all (especially Michelle Trachtenberg), but even on first viewing it felt like mostly a dog-body episode for the season arc, moving some major plot elements forward, setting other things in place for bigger things to come, establishing in a show-not-tell way that was explained in a Checkpoint—that Glory is a big threat, too big for any of them to take on. Willow can do the most damage, but it’s temporary and comes at great coat. Spike and Buffy are thrown around like rag dolls. Ben knows that Dawn is the key, so Glory has a new potential angle to find out. Buffy has moved past her initial ambivalence and will protect Dawn no matter what. It’s like watching the moves in the middle part of a chess game. More interesting than the initial moves of the pawns, but not the exiting part of the game.

Wait a minute, what??! You're saying Ben and Glory are, like, working together? Or... Wait, what's this about again? 😂

Yay! I love your reaction - especially to Ben transforming into Glory! What a reveal, eh and what an episode. All the stuff about family and love is great. Michelle does a brilliant job as Dawn being in crisis about the nature of her existence. And yes, I love Glory as a villain too, she's great. My favourite detail of this episode is that Spike is sitting painting his nails on top of a sarcophagus when Buffy storms into his crypt. Though I do also love the squashed box of chocolates :D and his scenes with Dawn. Willow did some real powerful magic in this episode! With the help of Tara with creating the magic dust, but it sure took a lot out of her. I love your reaction to that - "Did you send her to the sun coz that would be really good!" - I never thought of that! Long time no see btw, I've just been exhausted & drained ( disability stuff) and no spoons whatsoever for commenting lately - which is annoying, coz I absolutely love season 5 of Buffy. So just to say I am really enjoying your reactions, and to Angel too, which also has a great plot in season2 with it's Darla storyline - it's a great combo.

YASSS @ the reveal! So, didd anybody else know that Ben is Glory and Glory is Ben?

Ben and Glory are brother and sister. Loved your reaction to finding this out

Thanks so much. You're the best! Honestly. I love your Home Alone shirt as well. Thanks again. Happy holidays :)

How PERFECT is it that Glory was ranting about being out of energy and the popup offered DIY tips to never run out of energy again. ;)

Michelle was great playing someone suddenly shocked into an existential crisis.

It stopped at 33 mins for me! I'm about to try again.... from the beginning 😭 It doesn't often do this for me, only the second time I think 🤔

I think Michelle Trachtenberg was 15 or 16 when this was filmed and she did a good job with the episode. Also love the 'Little Miss Drama' t-shirt she's wearing early on. Three episodes ago we found out what Riley expected from the person he loved which was that she should respond in the same way or else he would leave the country. Now we see that for Buffy it doesn't matter how the other person feels about it. She loves Dawn. Is Spike an honorary Scoobie now? Last episode Buffy left him in charge of Dawn and Joyce. This week she doesn't hesitate to bring him in on the search. Loved the scolding that Buffy tries to dish out about how Dawn learned the news and how Spike turns it back on Buffy. Especially the things which go unspoken when Buffy realizes that Spike is right and Spike realizes that he's hurt Buffy again. With regards to “Family” the Summers are doing what the McClays were trying to do with Tara - convince a wayward daughter that everything will be okay if she just stays home with her family. The biggest difference is that Tara was always a normal (and older) person being lied too while Dawn is actually more than what she seems and in grave danger.

For some reason it stopped playing at 38 minutes. Restarted it several times and finally gave up. Anyone else?

I like this episode, it was a long time coming the reveal about Dawn and all, and I think the show dealt with it right. Plus I love the Spike and Dawn moments in this episode. And you get more information about Glory as well.

My favorite detail in this ep is Spike bringing Buffy the smashed-up box of chocolates from his speech-practicing with the Buffy-mannequin.

I think Michelle Trachtenberg was the MVP of this episode. A great "launching the story forward" episode. (I could have just said "arc episode" lol.)
